Thorntons Solicitors announced as headline sponsor for Poppins-themed CHAS ball

Scottish law firm Thorntons is supporting Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) as headline sponsor for a second year at the charity’s sixth Rocking Horse Ball this summer.

The prestigious annual event, which will be held at Prestonfield House in Edinburgh on Friday 2 June is known as one of the best and most-loved charity dinners of the year in the capital, selling out months in advance. 

This year’s ball is being hosted by Jess Robinson and will have a Mary Poppins theme,

The 2022 Rocking Horse Ball, sponsored by Thorntons, raised over £100,000 for the children and families CHAS supports. 

In Scotland, nearly 16,000 children and young people live with life-shortening conditions and CHAS is determined to reach every family who needs its services. 

The charity provides nation-wide hospice services for babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions at Rachel House in Kinross and Robin House in Balloch while the CHAS at Home service supports families their own homes.

Thorntons Solicitors to hold Menopause Seminar for Employers

With recent studies showing that nine in ten women feel menopause affects their work, many employers are reassessing the needs of their employees and introducing menopause support resources in the workplace.

In order to support and educate employers on how best to handle menopause in the workplace, Thorntons Solicitors is hosting an hour-long webinar led by Employment Law Legal Director, Amy Jones, on World Menopause Day 2021.

Taking place virtually between 9:30-10:30am on Monday 18th October, Amy will discuss potential for discrimination and other claims if menopause is not handled appropriately together with practical tips on handling the effects of menopause within the work environment. 

Amy, who has specialised in employment law for over ten years, said: “As a society, we are making progress in acknowledging the ways the menopause can impact a person – physically, emotionally, and professionally. In my upcoming webinar, I’ll be discussing the legal position around menopause at work and the importance of training, support and flexibility for managers and co-workers.”

“Many employers will be considering the need to make adjustments for staff, and I will be offering some insight on what that might look like in their workplace as well as taking the time to answer audience questions.”

Thorntons Solicitors welcome new trainees

Leading Scottish law firm Thorntons welcomed six further trainee solicitors this September. This follows an earlier intake of ten trainees in March of this year and underlines the firm’s commitment to growth.

The new recruits will undertake a two year course across the firm’s network of offices, developing their skills and knowledge across a variety of legal disciplines, as part of their traineeship.

All trainees will adopt a blended work approach, working both from home and in the Thorntons’ offices, ensuring they have direct support from their supervising partner and other colleagues.

The trainees are Walter Buckman from Glasgow, David Durie and Finlay Williamson from Dundee, Antonia Kildare and Hannah Smethurst from Edinburgh, and Martyna Kotlarz from Aberdeen.

Structured around four six-month department rotations, the trainees will gain hands-on experience, complete practical work and have direct client contact from early on. The group will also benefit from Thorntons’ diverse learning and development programmes, mentoring scheme and internal virtual networking opportunities which are all designed to further advance skills and knowledge.

Additionally, all trainees are allocated a specially selected mentor from Thorntons’ team to offer advice and guidance throughout the duration of the training contract.

New trainee David Durie said: “Going to University in Dundee, Thorntons was a huge presence in the legal community. But the firm didn’t just appear to us in billboards, on the television, and on the radio. The people at Thorntons were always willing to give their time to help with events, offer their knowledge and advice, and even act as a sounding board regarding doubts about our futures.

“When I was given the opportunity to join the firm as a trainee and pay forward the help I was given, I knew I had to grab it. I have a lot to learn over the next two years, and there’s a lot of work to be done. But that work is made all the more rewarding by witnessing first-hand that ‘doing what’s right’ isn’t just a slogan, it really is Thorntons’ mission.”
