On Saturday (31st October), 5000 people gathered at Calton Hill to witness the arrival of Winter at Beltane Fire Society’s annual Samhuinn Fire Festival.

Through fire, drumming, dance and immersive street theatre, performers brought to life the changing of the seasons. The Summer King surrendered to the Winter Queen and the natural cycle of life, death and renewal began once again. It was a gloriously clear night, giving perfect visibility to the fiery spectacle known from Beltane Fire Society.

At the heart of this year’s festival stood the Cailleach, the ancient Crone and Goddess of Winter, guiding audiences through a celebration of darkness, transformation and the wisdom found in letting go. As the Summer and Winter Courts came together, the performance invited audiences to consider Winter as a necessary time of rest, reflection and regeneration rather than something to fear or overcome.

Under the theme Walk Beside the Darkness, this year’s festival explored the courage it takes to embrace change, the sacrifices that make renewal possible, and the importance of holding life and death with equal reverence. As the wheel of the year turned, audiences were reminded that even in the darkest season, the seeds of new life wait beneath the earth.

Jenny Bloom, Chair of the Beltane Fire Society, said: “We’re delighted to once again welcome Samhuinn to Edinburgh, and thank our wonderful witnesses and volunteers for an incredible night!

“Though the current climate crisis continues to be of deep concern to ourselves and the natural world, we take the wisdom and strength of the Cailleach as we step into the darker months, and come together as a community. We look forward to meeting again at Beltane!”
