Pedestrian death on Easter Road: Dangerous driver jailed

A 26-year-old man has been jailed for four years and six months for causing death by dangerous driving in Leith.

Ralph Fairhurst was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Thursday, 7 November, 2024. 

Officers were called to the fatal collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Easter Road around 2.40am on Sunday, 19 June, 2022.

The pedestrian, a 21-year-old man, was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh however he died on Wednesday, 29 June, 2022. 

Fairhurst, the driver of the car, fled the area and was traced by officers later that day. 

Road Policing Sergeant Paul Ewing said: “Our thoughts remain with family and friends of the young man that lost his life, and I hope that today’s sentencing brings them some comfort and allows them to move forward.

“Ralph Fairhurst showed absolutely no regard for the law and his reckless actions highlight the devastating consequences of dangerous driving and the lasting impact it has on those involved, along with their families and friends.”

Man dies in hospital after crash on the A768 in Loanhead

POLICE APPEAL FOR KEY WITNESSES TO COME FORWARD

An 88-year-old man has died in hospital after a serious crash on the A768 in Loanhead. The incident happened around 7am on Tuesday, 19 December at Knivensknowe Road and involved the man, who was a pedestrian, and a Honda Civic car.

The man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he died as a result of injuries yesterday (Saturday, 23 December).

He was walking his dog at the time of the collision which has also since passed away.

The male driver of the car did not require medical treatment.

Sergeant Grant Hastie of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit said: “Our investigation into the circumstances of this collision are ongoing and our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“We would urge anyone who may have information which not yet been passed to police to come forward.

“In particular we are working to identify two people who were at a bus stop near where the incident happened at the time and would urge them to come forward.

Police appeal following fatal crash on Stevenson Drive

POLICE are appealing for information following a fatal crash in Edinburgh.

Emergency services were called to Stevenson Drive in the Balgreen area around 3.30pm yesterday (Saturday, 26 August, 2023) after a crash involving a car and a 70-year-old female pedestrian.

The pedestrian was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where she died a short time later.

The 23-year-old driver of the car, a black Mercedes C-Class, was arrested in connection with a road traffic offence.

The road was closed while crash investigations were carried out and reopened around 9.50pm.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Police Sergeant Jill Kirkpatrick said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who died at this very difficult time. We will continue to support them as our enquiries progress.

“I’m appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and saw what happened to get in touch. Drivers with dashcam footage of Stevenson Drive in the time leading up to the crash are urged to review it and bring anything of significance to our attention.”

Man dies in hospital after collision involving car on Colinton Road

A man has died in hospital following a road traffic collision in Edinburgh last Saturday (30 July).

Paul McGlade, 35, from Edinburgh was struck by a black Mercedes A Class car on Colinton Road while he was on foot around 11.35pm.

He was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he died on Tuesday, 2 August.

The 20-year-old male driver of the car was uninjured.

Sergeant Paul Ewing said: “Our thoughts are with Paul’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances which led to this incident and I would urge anyone who may have information but has not yet spoken to an officer to get in touch.

Pedestrian dies following Easter Road incident

Road Policing officers in Edinburgh can confirm that a 21-year-old man has died following a hit-and-run incident in Leith.

The incident involved a car and a pedestrian, and took place in Easter Road around 2.40am on Sunday, 19 June, 2022.

The pedestrian was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at the time, but has since passed away. His family have asked for privacy at this time.

A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and further enquiries remain ongoing.

Sergeant Paul Ewing, from the Edinburgh Road Policing team, said: “At this time, our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the deceased.

“We are continuing our enquiries into the incident and would ask anyone who was in the area at the time and may have information to come forward. We’re also particularly keen to speak with two females who were seen near to an ATM at the bottom of Easter Road, around 2.30am.

Appeal following fatal crash on the A1 in East Lothian

Road Policing officers are appealing for information following a fatal road crash on the A1 near to Macmerry, East Lothian.  The incident happened shortly after midnight on Sunday, 5 June, 2022, and involved a taxi and a pedestrian. 

Emergency services attended and the 28-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed. The driver of the car was not injured.
 
Sergeant Barry Sommerville said: “Our thoughts are very much with the man who died.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I am appealing for anyone who may have seen anything that could assist us to get in touch.

“I would also appeal to anyone who was in the area around the time and who has a dashcam to check their footage.”

Police appeal following Marionville Road fatality

Police are appealing for information following a fatal road crash on Marionville Road on Friday night.

The incident happened around 10.50pm on Friday (6 May, 2022), and involved a silver Vauxhall Zafira and a pedestrian. Emergency services attended and the 62-year-old female pedestrian Suzanne Farrell was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where she died yesterday (Saturday, 7 May).

The 33-year-old male driver of the car was arrested in connection and released pending further enquiries.

Sergeant Ross Drummond, of the Edinburgh Road Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who has died in this crash and our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“I am asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time and saw what happened or who has dash-cam footage that could assist with our investigation to get in touch.”
