From today, Morrisons is offering cuts of pork, gammon, sausages and bacon at knockout prices, to help British pig farmers.

Britain is a significant exporter of pork. However, for the last six weeks the EU has taken substantially less British meat. As a consequence, a pork mountain is building up on British farms, and pig farmers are struggling to find a home for their produce. Morrisons has stepped in by slashing pork prices for 10 weeks from 22 February. It hopes the offers will boost demand and play a part in helping the farmers out.

The prices of all of Morrisons British pork products will be cut. A pork shoulder – normally costing £4.20 per kilo – will cost just £2; a pork loin – normally costing £6 per kilo – will cost just £4; and a pork tenderloin – normally costing £7.50 – will cost just £6.

The majority of Morrisons The Best Sausages and Bacon will also be on offer at 2 for just £4, and all of Morrisons British gammon will be cut by one third to just 90p per 100g.

Morrisons is also offering bacon or sausage sandwiches and a hot drink to take away from their cafes for only £3. Customers can pre-order their take away for pickup by calling 0330 808 9733.

Sophie Throup, Head of Agriculture at Morrisons, said: “Britain produces some of the finest pig breeds and pork products in the world. But pig farmers are currently facing difficult times.

“We’re British farming’s biggest supermarket customer and feel it’s our duty to help. So we’re introducing knockout deals across our store – and hope this will encourage our customers to help farmers by buying more pork.”

Morrisons is British farming’s biggest supermarket customer. And has its our own expert Livestock and Produce Teams, who work directly with farmers, and take meat, fruit and vegetables direct from farms to its 18 meat, fruit and vegetable preparation sites.

Morrisons to give away 60,000 FREE pizza-making kits to families in need this half term

Morrisons is giving away 60,000 pizza-making kits across the UK this half term to help fight  holiday hunger.

Colleagues working on Morrisons pizza counters in stores will each prepare 30 pizza kits per  day, which will then be distributed to local schools and community groups to help support  families in need via Morrisons Community Champions.

Each kit includes ready to roll pizza dough, tomato sauce, grated cheese and either peppers  and sweetcorn or pepperoni and ham depending on whether families would like a meat or  vegetarian option.

The kits also contain a recipe card with cooking instructions and details of a competition that  families can enter to be in with the chance of winning £100 Morrisons vouchers. All they  have to do is post a picture of their pizza tagging Morrisons on Instagram and include the  hashtag #PizzaKitWin.

Morrisons pizza-kit donations follow the donation of over 75,000 lunchboxes to school  children over the previous half term break in October 2020.

Sian Ayling, Head of Food To Go at Morrisons, said: “We want to ensure that as many children as possible have access to the food they need  over the half term break, which is why we’re offering these pizza kits to those who need them in our local communities and would encourage as many people as possible to get  involved with our competition.’

Morrisons also offers customers the option of buying their own ‘Pick Up Packs’, which are  also distributed to local food banks, schools and community groups.

The packs’ cost between £1 and £5 and contain a nutritionally balanced mix of food products  and other essentials that have been requested by the local community groups according to  their needs.

The pre-packed parcels are available at the front of all Morrisons stores and are  paid for at the checkout. The pack is then put aside in our dedicated donation areas ready to  be passed on the local food banks and community groups.

Morrisons announce more support for food banks

Morrisons has announced it will set aside a further £5 million of food supplies to help keep the nation’s food banks stocked up this year.

Last year, Morrisons led the charge to restock Britain’s food banks, who found themselves struggling with unprecedented demand for their services. Through Morrisons network of Community Champions, £10 million of stock was delivered direct to food banks across the UK.

As the UK’s largest fresh foodmaker, Morrisons ran its bakery, egg and fruit & veg packing site for an extra hour every day to make, prepare and pack food required to restock the food banks – with over 2 million eggs and over 300,000 loaves of bread distributed through Morrisons own manufacturing sites.

Morrisons also focused on the essential products food banks were calling out for supplying 1 million packets of pasta, 1.5 million litres of long life milk and over 800,000 tins of beans to those in need. Other treats to help bring joy to families included 1 million Easter Eggs and 50,000 packs of McVities Victoria Biscuits through an innovative buy one, donate one campaign in November.

Food was then distributed locally through Morrisons network of local heroes – the community champions – who work closely with food banks on the ground to ensure they’re getting the vital stock that they need.

Food banks continue to play a vital role in the pandemic for many of the most vulnerable people in communities, with research by the Trussell Trust forecasting a 61% increase in food parcels needed across its UK Network this winter – and six emergency food parcels given out every minute.

The £5 million donation by Morrisons will continue to distribute food to those most in need this year.

Morrisons Chief Executive, David Potts said: “As food banks continue to face the extremely challenging times they find themselves in, it is only right that we continue to play our full part at Morrisons in feeding the nation.

“As a business our priority remains to be kind and support those in society who find themselves struggling through this very difficult time; all of us working together means no-one need be left behind”.

Morrisons customers have also played their part throughout the pandemic, contributing over £180,000 to the Trussell Trust through Morrisons.com and donating hundreds of thousands of products in store through the Morrisons Pick Up Packs.

A scheme where customers can select a small paper bag filled with a number of items needed specifically by their local food bank labelled with a price at the front of store, pay for the items and drop off their bag on their way out.

Morrisons to provide 2 million meals to over 30,000 families in need from own food-making sites

– Food to come from Morrisons food-making sites, distribution centres and suppliers –

– Morrisons will work with food redistribution charity The Bread and Butter Thing to reach 30,000 families in 100 locations –

Morrisons is extending its work with leading food redistribution charity The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT), to provide great quality food for thousands of families in the UK, while at the same time significantly reducing food waste in its food making operations and supply chain around the UK.

Food factories are the second highest source of food waste after households, according to the food waste charity WRAP.  This typically happens because of overproduction, imperfections, mis-labelling or because the food runs out of shelf life.

During 2021, Morrisons plans to redistribute surplus food to 30,000 families in need through TBBT. Morrisons partnership with TBBT was set up in 2016 and has so far provided 2m meals to its members.

The food – amounting to another 800 tonnes or 2 million meals a year – will come from a range of Morrisons food-making sites, distribution centres, and UK suppliers. The range of products donated will include fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, prepared food and bread.

TBBT will redistribute it to families in need of healthy and nutritious meals. Its research found 80 per cent of adults who received food from TBBT are skipping meals themselves to feed their families1

So far, the partnership has enabled TBBT to double its reach from its Greater Manchester origins. A second TBBT warehouse opened in County Durham in November 2020, new vans will take the fleet to 10, and over 50 hubs are expected to be operational across the North of England by mid 2021. Morrisons support will enable the charity to expand nationally to 100 locations by the start of 2022.

Steven Butts, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Morrisons, said: “Reducing food waste is important to our customers, colleagues and shareholders.

“We’ve made very strong progress in reducing waste in our supermarkets over many years.  But there is still more to do behind the scenes and this extension of our partnership with TBBT will mean that they can do even more for families around the UK while at the same time helping us further reduce wasted food.”

Mark Game, CEO TBBT, said: “We’ve all faced enormous challenges this year and we could not have done it without Morrisons’ continued support and the heroic efforts of its team to keep its surplus food coming to us in addition to feeding the nation during this tumultuous time.

“I’m enormously grateful to Morrisons and all its staff for helping us to keep our members fed with quality, nutritious food which, for a whole variety of reasons, couldn’t be sold.

“We work in some of the UK’s most deprived communities. The financial savings for people using our service are significant, people eat better quality and a bigger variety of food, and we save tonnes of surplus edible food from going to waste.

“It’s a win/win solution for everyone. Morrisons have been a major supporter since our launch in 2016, and I’m excited that this new, extended partnership will enable us to grow nationwide.”

Morrisons has pledged to reduce operational food waste by 50% by 2030. To date the supermarket has launched the biggest Wonky fruit and veg range, has donated surplus food from every store, and offers boxes of veg, bakery and deli items for just £3.09 via the Too Good to Go App. Since 2015 Morrisons stores have also given surplus food to local good causes – totalling 3.5 tonnes last year.

Morrisons has 18 of its own food making sites – preparing meat, fruit, veg, fish, bakery and fresh food products, plus six distribution centres. The supermarket is the largest fresh food manufacturer in the UK, and makes more than half of the fresh food sold in its stores.

Morrisons to pay £10 per hour

– All supermarket colleagues to receive at least £10 an hour from April –

– First major UK supermarket to reach key pay milestone –

Morrisons is today announcing a new pay deal for its store colleagues, becoming the first UK supermarket group to guarantee pay of at least £10 an hour.

The new deal will start in April and will mean a significant pay increase for nearly 96,000 Morrisons colleagues. For the majority of colleagues the pay increase is approximately 9%.

Morrisons minimum hourly pay currently stands at £9.20 an hour***. Today’s announcement means that since 2015, Morrisons pay has increased by over 46%.

Three quarters of the costs of the increase will be met by direct payroll investment and a quarter by changing the discretionary annual colleague bonus scheme. Having listened hard to colleagues, they said they would prefer to have a guaranteed amount in their hourly rate and receive it more regularly. So, the annual budget for the discretionary bonus scheme is being rolled into colleagues’ hourly rate, which is paid every four weeks.

David Potts, Morrisons CEO, said: “It’s great to be able to say that in the UK from April this year, if you work at Morrisons supermarkets, you will earn at least £10 an hour. It’s a symbolic and important milestone that represents another step in rewarding the incredibly important work that our colleagues do up and down the country.

“Over the last year we have seen renewed and widespread appreciation in the UK for our colleagues who have had an incredibly tough 2020, working tirelessly so Britain could eat well and shop safely throughout the pandemic. Morrisons colleagues have earned their status as key workers, and this pay increase, many times over.”

Joanne McGuinness, Usdaw National Officer, said: “The new consolidated hourly rate is now the leading rate of the major supermarkets, which is paid every hour and removes the uncertainty of a bonus payment.

“It is a big step forward, shows that Morrisons is prepared to invest in the staff to help grow the business and I hope that the deal is supported by our members in the ballot.

“It’s been a tough time for food retail staff who have worked throughout the pandemic in difficult circumstances. They provide the essential service of keeping the nation fed and deserve our support, respect and appreciation. Most of all they deserve decent pay and this offer is a welcome boost.”

The pay deal announced today is subject to a ballot opening on 27 January 2021.

Miles Foster, Morrisons Online Operations Director said: “We are doing everything we can to increase the amount of home delivery slots available but we recognise that the slots get snapped up quickly in lockdown. Click & Collect is an excellent alternative and is proving really popular with customers.

“Since the first lockdown we have expanded our Click & Collect service significantly and it is now available from 447 of our stores across the country.  We have slots available now nationwide so our customers can get the groceries they need in a contact-free and convenient way.”

Morrisons to carry out 30,000 acts of kindness in local communities in the run up to Christmas

– Two thirds of people feel reconnected with their community via a small act of kindness –

– Morrisons Community Champions to carry out over 30,000 acts of kindness in local communities in the run up to Christmas –

– Activity kicks off with giving away nearly 100,000 mince pies to local care homes –

– Community kindness is expected to touch the lives of tens of thousands of people nationwide –

Morrisons is carrying out over 30,000 acts of kindness this Christmas including delivering free mince pies to local care homes, donating Rudolph carrots to local nurseries, giving away flowers in local communities, and surprising Covid-19 heroes by gifting festive hampers.

The activity is expected to touch the lives of tens of thousands of people living throughout the UK in the 12 days leading up to Christmas.

The Morrisons Acts of Community Kindness activity aims to help customers and communities feel festive this year after nearly halfof adults reported that their well-being was being affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Research by Morrisons revealed 46 per cent of people said they are feeling more isolated and alone than they normally would. Two thirds (67 per cent) said a simple act of kindness could help them feel reconnected with their community and three quarters (77 per cent) said it would positively change their entire outlook for the day.

In the run up to Christmas, a Community Champion from every Morrisons store will venture out into their local community every day to conduct acts of kindness. It kicks off with nearly 100,000 mince pies being delivered to thousands of residents in hundreds of care homes across the country, from 8 December.

In addition to this:

  • 10,000 key worker treats will be given to local healthcare workers, police and firefighters;
  • Nearly 9,000 gifts will be donated to disadvantaged families;
  • Over 4,000 ‘be kind to yourself’ packs will be handed out to customers;
  • Nearly 4,000 bouquets of flowers and mistletoe will be given away in local communities; and,
  • 2,500 hampers will be gifted to local heroes who have played a big part in supporting their local area through the pandemic.

The activity continues Morrisons commitment of ensuring no-one gets left behind during the coronavirus pandemic.

This has included Morrisons launching a Doorstep Delivery service earlier this year where colleagues deliver shopping direct to the doorstep of vulnerable and elderly customers in the community, and a £10 million donation to restock the nation’s local food banks.

Rebecca Singleton, Community Director at Morrisons said: “Small acts of kindness go a very long way. They can make our world feel like a kinder, happier and more caring place.

“Our Community Champions are going out into their local communities and spreading some good cheer. It’s the right thing to do in this difficult year when our stores and communities have been pulling together to look after each other.”

Not Simply Red!

– Morrisons launches multi-coloured poinsettias for Christmas –

– The unique style isn’t available in any other supermarkets –

– Poinsettias are the birth flower for December and one of the most popular festive flower offerings due to their star-like leaves –

cidimage001.png@01D6CF20.DC34A8B0

Morrisons has added a festive multi-coloured poinsettia into its flower range this month. The striking and exciting new varieties are a mixture of Pink, White and Red and aren’t available on any other supermarket shelves.

Poinsettias are symbolic with Christmas, featuring star-like leaves and a traditionally bright red colour that is symbolic of the festive season. In December 2019, Morrisons sold over 500,000 units of the traditional red variety and expects this to increase this year.

They are known for being incredibly photogenic due to their striking red foliage. In fact, the hashtag #poinsettias has over 335,000 posts on Instagram.

The Best Multi-Coloured Poinsettia is available in 350 Morrisons stores now and costs £8. Morrisons is also selling traditional Red Poinsettias for just £3.

Rebecca Ruck, Horticultural Buyer at Morrisons says: “People are increasingly on the lookout for ways to make sure their festive displays and decorations stand out.

“The new The Best Poinsettias will ensure that customers can have brightly coloured and expressive displays, without breaking the bank.”
