The Painting for Pleasure weekend workshop offers a wonderful and enjoyable creative experience with full 1-to-1 professional guidance & support at an affordable price. Welcome to all adults, whatever your age, creative experience or artistic ability. Enjoy the creative process and the time to practice painting for a whole day in the relaxing social atmosphere of Madelvic House.

Painting for Pleasure is a self-directed learning and art practice workshop. Meaning – you are free to choose from whichever area of visual arts and art materials you wish to explore and learn more about through artistic practice. With as much personal support and help, guidance and positive mentoring as you require to complete your first art project and more.

Granton:hub’s studio resident artist, Gareth Hutchison, will help you every step of the way. You can choose to use Acrylics, watercolours, oil painting to drawing, mixed media and collage. Art Materials are not provided, although Gareth does supply a small amount for you to try when necessary.

Citizen writers meet in person tonight

Edinburgh International Book Festival’s Citizen writing programme has been working in communities across Edinburgh and the Lothians since 2019.

The weekly local writers group, which meets on Monday evenings, has met online since the Covid lockdown, but will meet in person tonight for the first time in a very long time at Musselburgh’s Fisherrow Centre from 6.30 – 8pm.

As life slowly returns to normal (fingers firmly crossed!) another in-person workshop is planned for granton:hub at Madelvic House on Monday 21st November from 6 – 8pm.

Online weekly sessions will continue between the two ‘in-person’ workshops.

The local writers showcased a selection of writing at the Edinburgh International Book Festival in August and are now looking forward to presenting more of their work at Winter Warmer events in Musselburgh and North Edinburgh in December.

Provisional dates for the two Winter Warmer events are Friday 2 December in Musselburgh and West Pilton Neighbourhood Centre on Saturday 3 December – more details to follow soon.

In advance of the submission of a planning application, the National Galleries of Scotland is holding a series of drop-in public consultation events. 

The second and final event is taking place on the following dates, providing an opportunity to attend in person or online:

Cultural Heritage at the Edge: Granton past and future exhibition

granton:hub and Edinburgh College of Art invite the local community to discuss what could happen with local spaces, places and landscapes.

Pop along on Friday (25th February) between 3 – 7pm to the heritage exhibition.

Find out about Granton, its past and its future as told by the local community.

Edinburgh College of Art students will present their findings, whilst over a cuppa you can read and hear about Granton’s rich industrial #heritage.

CUTE workshops: Cultural heritage at the edge in Granton

Granton:hub is taking part in an exciting European funded research project on the evolving heritages of Edinburgh’s shifting coastline. 

A group of Edinburgh College of Art academics and their students would like to meet with the Granton community young and old, to reflect on the following themes / questions:

  1. What is the wider geographical context of the Granton area?
  2. How has the area evolved over time, physically, socially, and economically?
  3. Who governs cultural heritage in Granton, and how?
  4. How have local groups and stakeholders developed a sense of the heritage value of Granton?

We would like to invite you to discuss these themes, through interviews, either over Zoom, by phone or in person. Each slot will take around 30-45 minutes but this is flexible. Activities will take place on 3 separate days.

On the final day (Friday) the researchers will present a summary of their findings in the Hub and invite discussion on the future of cultural heritage in Granton. This event will give a chance to chat over a cup of tea/coffee and view the posters that the ECA studenst will have made.

To take part, please book the relevant day(s) on Evenbrite. A researcher from ECA will contact you to arrange a suitable time slot. 

All in-person meetings and the Friday event will follow current government COVID guidelines.

After the event, ECA will produce a document outlining their findings, for presentation at Una Europe, hosted by Universite Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne. Your input would therefore shape a collaborative generated dossier of information about Granton to be presented at European level.

Plaque unveiling ceremony at Madelvic House tomorrow

Madelvic House has been awarded a red wheel by the National #Transport Trust In recognition of the unique #car making that was started in the factory in the late 1890s.

Vice-President John Yellowlees of the Trust will officially unveil the plaque today – Friday 26 November.

We would like to invite you to come along to celebrate this occasion, from 1pm onwards.

The history hub will have displays available, highlighting the importance of the factory and many other industries in Granton.
