Leith event to celebrate New Scots as part of Refugee Festival Scotland

A special multicultural event celebrating the contributions of New Scots to Scotland’s cultural life, is set to take place in Edinburgh this weekend as part of Refugee Festival Scotland.

The New Scots Extravaganza, organised by Hibernian Community Foundation, will bring together performers from Scottish, Ukrainian, Crimean Tatar, African, Afghan and Indian communities through music, dance and storytelling.

Taking place on World Refugee Day, this Saturday 20 June, at Edinburgh’s Norton Park, the performances will celebrate community, art and culture, championing the diverse cultures that contribute to life in Scotland and exploring themes of roots,  memory, displacement, resilience and belonging.

Combining authentic cultural expression with moments of artistic collaboration, the event highlights how diverse traditions continue to live, evolve and enrich the cultural life of Edinburgh.

The New Scots Extravaganza aims to create a space where communities are seen, heard and valued, and where Scotland is celebrated as a place shaped by many voices, stories and cultures.

Organiser Vitaliia Melnyk said: “For me, this event is important because it creates a space where people from different backgrounds can be seen, heard and valued. It is an opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity, and recognise the experiences, contributions and stories of people who have made Scotland their new home.

“As a Ukrainian living in Scotland, I have seen how culture can create connection, even when people come from very different places. New Scots Extravaganza is about building those connections and showing that Scotland is enriched by the people who have arrived here and become part of its communities.”

This year’s Refugee Festival Scotland sees hundreds of events staged across Scotland, all designed to put solidarity centre stage and bring people together in celebration of art, culture and community.

Run by Scottish Refugee Council, the annual festival showcases the music, dance, food, art, film, language and ideas that enrich communities.

Refugee Festival Scotland Manager, Mónica Laiseca said:Refugee Festival Scotland is a festival for everyone. This year’s programme brings together artists, communities and audiences from across the country to share culture and time together in meaningful ways, with each event, artist and participant bringing their own perspective to the programme.

“We’re proud to showcase the creativity, resilience and hope that refugees bring to Scotland, and highlight the richness of culture that flourishes when everyone feels they belong. In a time when calls for unity and compassion are more important than ever, this festival is a reminder of what we can achieve together.”

New Scots Extravaganza takes place at Norton Park, Edinburgh at 2pm, Saturday 20 June and is free to attend.

Hibs community charity under starter’s orders at Musselburgh Racecourse

HIBERNIAN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION RACEDAY

SUNDAY 15th FEBRUARY

Musselburgh Racecourse has teamed up with Hibernian FC to launch a new raceday which support the Edinburgh club’s highly respected community charity.

The Hibernian Community Foundation Raceday on Sunday 15 February echoes the proud charitable heritage of the Leith club which was formed in 1875 to help support local communities through match gate receipts.

The raceday features seven jumps races and opens with the £10,000 Sunshine on Leith maiden hurdle over two miles, and the three mile Famous Five handicap chase has been named after the legendary Hibs team of the 1950s.

special admission ticket will donate £2 from each sale to the Hibernian Community Foundation and as with all Musselburgh racedays, children aged 17 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

The Hibernian Community Foundation focuses its attention on two key components – community football and community development.

The charity aims to provide footballing opportunities to all, regardless of background, skill level, or ambition to progress in the game, while its community outreach development programmes provide safe and warm spaces, hearty and healthy meals, activities for the elderly, and a welcoming community for all.

Musselburgh Racecourse Head of Marketing and Business Development, Aisling Johnston, said: “Whether you’re coming to support a great cause, celebrate the club, or simply enjoy a brilliant day out, The Hibernian Community Foundation Raceday promises excitement, pride, and community spirit in equal measure.

“This new event recognises the incredible work the Foundation does across Edinburgh and beyond – and you may even catch a glimpse of some of the club’s footballing legends.

“The racecourse is sandwiched between Easter Road Stadium and the magnificent club training centre in Ormiston, which provides amazing access to East Lothian residents, so we were delighted to support the charitable foundation by hosting this special raceday.”

Hibernian Community Foundation Head of Community and Depute CEO, Katie Stewart, said: “The Hibernian Community Foundation is extremely excited to partner with such a prominent member of the Edinburgh community in Musselburgh Racecourse.

“The day will be a great opportunity for racegoers to learn about the Foundation and support our numerous activities, while taking in all the exciting action on the track. We are really looking forward to working closely together in the future on premium events that gives a platform to our community programmes and activities.”

Gates open at noon on 15 February, first race is scheduled for 1.50pm and last race 4.50pm (provisional).

Hibernian Community Foundation: Burns Supper Tea Dance

On Thursday Hibernian Community Foundation, in partnership with Pilmeny Development Project and Edinburgh Community Sports Hub, held our annual Burns Supper Tea Dance at the Hibs Supporters Club in Sunnyside!

The Dance was attended by over 90 elderly people in our community: coming together to enjoy warm company, a traditional Burns’ supper, hours of dancing, and the official Hibs Bagpiper @Lou_piper (above).

The Burns Supper Tea Dance is one of four events we hold a year to bring together elderly people from our community as part of our work in the Leith Older People’s Project.

Extra Time programme: After school clubs expansion

Supporting parents and improving kids’ health and wellbeing

More children across Scotland will have access to free after school activities as part of the government’s national mission to tackle poverty.

The Scottish Government’s Extra Time Programme, delivered in partnership with the Scottish Football Association, supports local football clubs and trusts to provide free before school, after school and holiday activity clubs to primary school children from low income families.

Last year up to 5,000 children across 28 local authority areas were able to attend regular services which provide childcare options for their parents.

The 2026-27 Scottish Budget is increasing investment to expand delivery and reach of after school services, building on the success of the Extra Time programme, in areas where it is required for families most in need.

First Minister John Swinney met pupils benefiting from after school activities provided by Hibernian Community Foundation as part of the programme.

First Minister John Swinney said: “We know that families greatly value the services provided through the Extra Time Programme, which extend the school day, helping parents enter and sustain employment.

“The clubs are also hugely popular with children, enabling them to take part in football and other activities, learn new skills and access healthy food – helping improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

“The Scottish Government has supported the successful delivery of the programme through grassroots football clubs and trusts across the country, working closely with schools and community organisations.

“This is an excellent example of how we are improving outcomes for families and delivering on my priorities for Scotland – tackling poverty and growing our economy.”

Hibernian Community Foundation: Parkinson’s Walking Football

Parkinson’s UK Get Active, Get Creative Scottish Parliament Event

Hibernian Community Foundation were kindly invited to the Scottish Government to support this event as part of our ongoing work with Parkinson’s UK in Scotland and Walking Football Scotland.

The event celebrated the power that physical activity and creativity has on people living with Parkinson’s. Our Football Development Officer Niamh Westwood and one of our Parkinson’s Walking Football volunteers Neil, were joined by Members of the Scottish Parliament, Trustee of Walking Football Scotland Matt Ramsay, several participants of our Walking Football Programme and other Parkinson’s partners to celebrate such a powerful event.

Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world, with almost 13,000 people affected in Scotland. Keeping active has many physical, mental, social and neurological benefits to someone living with Parkinson’s and we here at Hibernian Community Foundation are pleased to play a small part in that journey.

We welcome everyone living with Parkinson’s to our sessions. Our Parkinson’s Walking Football Programme runs every Wednesday at World of Football, 10 New Market Road, Edinburgh, EH14 1RJ from 11am-12pm with refreshments available after the session from 12-1pm.
