Lorna drums up a day to remember at Muirhouse Library
Muirhouse and Granton libraries held an event with Lorna Liverpool, author of the wonderful children’s book ‘A Dance to Remember’ on Monday. The event is part of the libraries’ celebration of Black History Month which began on the 1st of October and runs until the end of the month.
Lorna demonstrated African drumming and performed stories with arts and crafts for local primary school children – giving everyone a great opportunity to learn about the African drum’s significance in African culture, and of course to make some noise!
The children were joined by the local Living in Harmony group for Lorna’s session, making it a day to remember for all at Muirhouse Library.
Thanks to Declan McCann, team leader at Muirhouse Library, for the pictures

Community Mosaic afternoon: 9 May at Granton Library
Jill Marple from Granton Library has asked me to pass on the attached invitation to you all – happily the library have received some funding to create a story garden with a community mosaic as part of it, and they would really like members of the community to come along and get involved with creating the mosaic – they would love it to have influences from lots of different cultures.
This will be happening on Saturday 9 May from 2pm -4pm (see poster (below)for details).
No artistic experience is necessary – it will be very relaxed and refreshments will be provided. Please let Gill know if you (or anyone you know) would like to go along – her contact details are on the poster.
It sounds like it will be a really fun way to create something for the whole community to enjoy!

Social History Group’s site on show at local libraries
North Edinburgh Social History Group will be giving demonstrations of their ‘Never Give Up’ on-line archive at Granton and Muirhouse libraries next month.
The social history group spent three years researching North Edinburgh’s proud history of community activism, amassing a huge volume of material in the process. The group’s ‘Never Give Up’ book received great reviews when it launched last year, and all the background information – and a lot of great material that didn’t make the book due to size constraints – was digitised and launched on-line by charity SCRAN in April for all to share and enjoy.
Members of North Edinburgh Social History Group will be visiting the local libraries to publicise and demonstrate this amazing resource at two local libraries next month – at Muirhouse on Thursday 6 September from 10am and then at Granton on Wednesday 12 September from 1pm.
It’s well worth a visit – a treasure trove of community memories which can be accessed for free by using your library card!

A world first for Granton Library?
No doubt many records will be broken over the coming days, but Granton Library may have set a record that can’t be broken.
Last Friday, Lara and Ali held a Zumba class at the library in Wardieburn Terrace for four to fourteen year olds – and very popular it was too!
As far as we know, this is the first ever Zumba session in a public library – maybe even a world first, unless you can inform us otherwise. Usain Bolt – eat your heart out!
