Men With Pens

NEW PROJECT AT GRANTON LIBRARY

Men With Pens is a series of creative writing and letter writing workshops for men living with mental health conditions. 

Working with groups in Perth and Edinburgh. Each participant will be paired anonymously with a participant from the other group.  The men will be encouraged to write letters, creating pen pals, to discuss their mental health. 

We will also work together, using reading and creative writing as a tool for maintaining well-being. 

The workshops will be led by Ross MacKay, an award-winning writer with lived experience of his own mental health conditions. 

Monthly Wednesday evening sessions at Granton Library on:

14th May – 5.30-7.30 

11th June – 5.30-7.30 

9th July – 5.30-7.30 

6th August – 5.30-7.30 

7th August – Evening Celebration at Edinburgh International Book Festival

Saturday: Dance performance and workshop at Granton Library

Edinburgh Multicultural Festival goes on tour! This fall we will be visiting libraries in the Edinburgh North neighbourhoods with our featured artists.

On Saturday, 19 October, Granton Library will be hosting ahalya Dance Academy who will bring a South Asian cultural dance performance and workshop for all ages.

Ahalya Dance Academy, an Edinburgh based dance school specialising in the ancient Indian art form of Bharatanatyam. Their vision is to bring the rich tradition of Bharatanatyam to diverse communities and provide a platform for aspiring dancers to learn and grow.

This event is free but ticketed, so make sure you register with us ahead of the event!

Bookbug Week: Granton Library needs your help!

We would love to learn some songs from non-English speaking families to celebrate Bookbug Week this year!

Would you like to share any with us?

If so, send us a message or speak to us at the library desk. We will ask you to teach us your song or rhyme and then we will use it in a special session in #BookbugWeek2024!

Gie it Laldy at Granton Library!

It’s no secret that we like a wee warble in Granton Library, whether it’s Bookbug, Library Link or just a pom pom pom behind the desk.

We decided to make a thing of it, and we have some songbooks to bring out, so why not join us and make a terrible noise in good company?

Everyone is welcome (and it may also suit people who have dementia with their carers; let us know if there’s anything we can do to open this up for you).

There will be absolutely no attempts to be good. At the moment it’s just a one-off but who knows?

Mermaid music at Granton Library

Have you ever met a mermaid? Would you like to?

Mermaid storyteller and singer extraordinaire Siren Cuan is coming to Granton Library and she would love you to join her!

(The person behind the mermaid, Catherine Bapty, is a music and ASN teacher with over 10 years’ experience).

We can’t wait for this exciting event. Please note that this is in our usual Friday Bookbug slot but as it’s aimed largely at the same age group we hope that won’t be a problem!

Granton Library Link: Can You Help?

RVS LOOKING FOR HOME LIBRARY SERVICE VOLUNTEER

We are looking for some help!

Our lovely Library Link group, which helps people with mobility difficulties to get to the library, is currently without a volunteer.

It runs on Tuesday mornings at 10am fortnightly and would require a commitment of around 3 hours.

The volunteer supports people from their front door onto the bus, during the session (tea and biscuits provided!) and then back home again.

If you think you could help, let us know at Granton library and we will put you in touch with the Royal Voluntary Service who co-ordinate this (Thanks RVS!)

Metaphrog coming to Granton Library

GRANTON Libary is excited to announce a superb author/illustrator visit coming to the Library after the holidays!

John Chalmers and Sandra Marrs, also known as Metaphrog, are award-winning graphic novelists whose work has a huge fanbase.

Are you aged 8-13 and love graphic novels, illustration and cartooning? This event is for you! They’ll share some insights about their working practice and guide you through some comic book inspiration so that you can create your own comic strips!

This will be a friendly workshop-style event in the library. Free to attend, all welcome.
