Youth Arts Bursaries announced

Over 30 opportunities for early career artists and creative practitioners aged 18-24 are being supported across the country thanks to a new Youth Arts Bursaries scheme with funding from the Scottish Government through Creative Scotland.

Twelve organisations across the country have been awarded over £270,000 to enable them to offer early career creatives the space, support, and platform to research, instigate, develop and share their creative projects.

The wide range of bursaries on offer includes opportunities in a diverse selection of sectors including visual arts, digital, crafts and traditional arts.

Among the range of opportunities, Eden Court will provide two six-month bursaries at £10,000 for a young artist to be embedded in the organisation’s engagement team with a dedicated mentor and support from creative producers. This opportunity will enable young artists to deliver a substantial project that will form part of Eden Court’s festive season offering.

The Work Room will collaborate with Barrowland Ballet in Glasgow to offer two early-career dance artists six-month bursaries, whereby financial support will enable the successful applicants to benefit from a supportive environment in which to instigate and develop their own creative projects.

In Orkney, Pier Arts (above) will offer a three-month opportunity with a two-week residency aimed at allowing an 18–24-year-old artist to engage with Pier Arts’ modernist art collection, network and meet with other professionals and experience Orkney’s unique environment.

Edinburgh organisation Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop receives £28,985.

Culture Minister Jenny Gilruth said: “The Scottish Government is pleased to provide further support to young artists and creative practitioners through Creative Scotland’s Youth Arts Bursaries. This funding will help talented young people across Scotland who have been significantly impacted by the challenges they’ve faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Supporting young people is central to our approach to COVID-19 recovery and it’s good to see that these bursaries have been shaped by the young people themselves to develop specific projects to advance their artistic careers.”

The National Youth Arts Advisory Group (NYAAG) have been closely involved in the development of the programme.

Youth Arts Bursary panellist member Laura Walker said: “It was a great experience as a young person to be a part of this decision-making-panel, knowing too that other young people had been involved in the assessment process before us.

“Not only does this allow us as assessors and decision-makers to build skills and be introduced to a professional process, but it means that we have crucial youth representation throughout.”

‘Stunning’ new cultural hub opens in Newhaven

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (Credit Sutherland Hussey Architects) (1)Creative Labs are GO! Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop proudly unveiled the new Creative Laboratories building on Thursday – an architecturally stunning facility specifically designed for sculptors.

Situated on old railway sidings in Newhaven, North Edinburgh Creative Laboratories will create a cultural hub, dedicated to the research and production of contemporary visual art.

Designed by Sutherland Hussey Architects as an inspiring environment where artists can make and present work, the new facility is equipped with viewing and meeting spaces designed to bring audiences closer to the art being made.

It features a 22.5m high triangular tower – a new addition to the city’s iconic skyline – and the development of the site has resulted in a significant area of land being re-gifted to the public by ESW as an extension of the adjacent cycle pathway where wildflower meadows have been planted.

The building has been fully funded by the Arts Funding Prize for Edinburgh administered by Foundation Scotland by means of a £3 million anonymous donation.

Incorporating sculpture bays, project spaces, and a bronze foundry the new facilities will complement those already in use at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s Bill Scott Sculpture Centre (also designed by Sutherland Hussey) which opened in July 2012.

To mark the beginning of ESW’s new international programme, Swedish artist Johanna Billing will begin her project How Do You Do?  this month and a mini-retrospective of her acclaimed film work will be exhibited in January.

How Do You Doattempts to capture the collective knowledge, expertise and erudition of Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s community by soliciting contributions from members and artists who have been involved with the organisation. Johanna will compile a book that will be part manual, part portrait of the organisation reflecting the scope of contemporary sculpture and the ambiguity of its borders. It aims to survey the ideas, skills and interests of ESW’s members and simultaneously the activity and concerns of a generation of contemporary artists.

On exhibition in the covered sculpture bays, a specialist stone-working space, are Jessica Harrison’s series of carved Kilkenny Limestone sculptures 00:09:34. These sculptures are scaled up from hand-sized clay maquettes made by participants and draw the viewer onto and into the surface of the forms to engage in a mimetic relationship with the hand that produced them. Each stone is titled according to the time spent handling the clay in making the original maquette, the collective title of which increases as the series grows.

A print commission by Miranda Blennerhassett and Bronze edition by Kate Ive will also launch with the opening of the new building; sales from the editions will continue to support the programme at ESW:

Miranda Blennerhassett’s specially commissioned print edition ESW explores the relationship between art and architecture by using the architect’s drawings for Creative Laboratories as their starting point. Informed by her research into Brian Dillon’s discussion of the theory of the ruin, the edition of 25 screen-prints will focus on “the fleeting moment that exists between a building having been built and the moment that the doors open and it begins to function and take on its own life beyond any control of the designer”.

Kate Ive has chosen to make a small artwork Dressed which relates to the construction of the Creative Laboratories by working with a large, life-size steel nail. Sculpting the nail by hand to inlay a delicate lace pattern (referencing Grinling Gibbons’ Cravat) the artist transforms a functional mundane object into something precious. Ive’s specially-commissioned artist’s edition has been cast by the artist in bronze onsite in ESW’s new facilities.

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop has commissioned a multi-disciplinary collaboration between designer Catherine Aitken and sculptor David Murphy to design furniture for use throughout the new buildings. At the heart of the Edward Marshall Trust commission was the notion that the designs would both be conceived and realised on site at ESW, involving staff and studio holders and helping to promote the range of facilities on offer.

At the heart of the new facility, the tower is a statement of ESW’s progressive, interdisciplinary ambition.

It will act both as a visual and cultural beacon attracting visitors to the complex. The triangular tower will house a newly-commissioned sound installation by Tommy Perman, Professor Simon Kirby and Rob St. John which will launch in the New Year: Concrete Antenna sonically explores the past, present and (potential) future of the Workshop’s site via sound gathered from audio archives and specially made field recordings. The installation subtly responds to the movements of visitors, creating a unique experience for every listener. It will extend by gathering new audio throughout the months it is on site.

Creative Laboratories will enable sculptors to make ambitiously-scaled pieces while public facilities – including a cafe situated to overlook the production of sculpture – will encourage greater interaction between artists and their local and international publics.

Jed Milroy and artist Johnny Gailey to raise awareness of the importance of this heritage.

Fishing Folk – Newhaven remembered

5yhf_NewhavenFishergirlsChoir1896small_4Since earliest times, Newhaven in Edinburgh has been famous for its fishing, its shipbuilding and its unique cultural traditions, celebrated through song and photography.

However, as the last memories of the fishing industry fade, the history and the culture of Newhaven, popular in the past, risk being forgotten or assigned to the annals of history.

To combat this, Citizen Curator is working with contemporary folk musician Jed Milroy and artist Johnny Gailey to raise awareness of the importance of the village’s heritage. This project will celebrate the spirit of the fisher folk, linking the 500-year-old history of Newhaven with the future of this developing community.

Through music-making workshops and explorations into archives and collections, Fishing Folk aims to re-examine the heritage of Newhaven, reinvigorating it for a new age.

College cements relationship with Sculpture Workshop

Contemporary art students will have the chance to work on their sculpture skills thanks to a partnership with a charitable art workshop centre. Edinburgh College has teamed up with the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW) as part of its aim to increase students’ employability.

Students studying towards a HND in Contemporary Art Practice will be given the chance to develop their practical skills in sculpture and other disciplines at a new employability centre at ESW. The £4 million development in Hawthornvale (pictured below) will offer students a professional environment and the opportunity to work alongside artists from around the world.

Alan Holligan, Lecturer at Edinburgh College, said: “We are very excited about our new partnership with the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, which we have managed to secure as a result of an ongoing relationship over the past eight years. It is important that learners on our Contemporary Arts course are given the chance to develop their practical skills in different disciplines such as sculpture and also look to further their professional development, in preparation for the work place.

“Our aim is to establish links with as many of the industries that our students will go on to work in, to give them the best chance possible when it comes to employment, with employers recognising that our courses have these valuable  links.  What’s especially great about this partnership is that the college donated £25,000 for new equipment for the ESW which means that the students will now have access to these brand new tools during their time there. Our students are looking forward to the many opportunities which will become available as a result of this partnership and especially the chance to exhibit their work once a year.”

Edinburgh College is the first college in Scotland to have worked with the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, the only purpose-built centre of its kind in the UK. The partnership will further student professional development as well as giving Edinburgh College staff free development opportunities.
