Fiveways to have a wheely good weekend!
It’s all happening on our local cycle paths on Sunday
Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust is running an event on the cycle paths in North Edinburgh this coming Sunday (writes ELGT’s Mark Sydenham).
Over the past few months we have been working at Fiveways Junction on some landscaping improvements to make Fiveways a landmark on the cycle paths.
Volunteers from Pilton Equalities Project and MYDG have been hard at work carrying out some woodland management and undergrowth clearance in the surrounding woodlands, opening the area up and cutting back overhanging ivy and branches to make the paths brighter and safer.
Royston Wardieburn Community Centre have been working on a six week project on the cycle paths with one of their groups, which has included learning about the paths and their history, and planting some fruit bushes.
This coming Sunday, we are inviting everyone to come along and take part. We have fruit and other bushes to plant, as well as other activities. We will have prizes and goodies to give away too!.
To win one of the prizes, we have a little quiz/treasure hunt – to get the questions, turn up to either the Crewe Toll bridge (over Ferry Road) or King George V Park (Canonmills) between 1pm and 1.30pm and then search out the answers on your way to Fiveways (make sure you get there by 1.30!).
Or just come along to Fiveways and join in the activities between 1pm and 4pm.

Fun in the park, by George!
Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnership’s BIG Search finished with a flourish at King George V Park on Monday, with an afternoon of family fun and games.

Balsam bashing, anyone? Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust are going to be busy on Monday – would you like to get involved too?
There is an afternoon of events taking place at King George V Park at Canonmills, just through the tunnel after the Tesco on the cycle path, this coming Monday.
12-2pm – the Inverleith Quest, which culminates in the park – a treasure hunt organised by Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnership, starting from Stockbridge
2-4pm – Parkour display in the park – watch some Parkour, be inspired and find out how to take part and get involved
2-4pm – Park Family Fun event – to mark the opening of the new play park area, there will be a barbecue and activities, including a portable football pitch and possible also circus skills classes…

ELGT are running more activities along the cycle paths in the coming months. Our aim is to get people to come down and try the paths, have a go at getting involved in conservation and other activities in the surrounding woodlands, and to help make the area a nicer place to visit. Chopping back undergrowth and overhanging branches will hopefully make the paths feel safer.
So, please see the attached flyer (above) for an activity this coming Monday evening for Himalayan Balsam bashing – i.e. getting people to come along and help clear the plants before the flowers seed and spread. I can’t find a way of describing it which doesn’t make it sound like hard work – but it is actually a great way of spending an hour or so, and very satisfying!
We will be organising more sessions in the coming months, including tree clearing, ivy cutting, path creation etc – if you would like to get involved, either as an individual or as an organisation, please let us know. We would love to be able to host your group or participants down on the paths.

Innertube map goes green
Edinburgh’s unique Innertube map is now celebrating the launch of its third version – the Greenspaces edition.
This green map highlights the many parks and green spaces that are easily accessible by bike or on foot using Edinburgh’s amazing network of off-street paths, made up of old railway lines, canal towpath, the Water of Leith walkway, coastal promenades, routes through parks or on dedicated segregated paths. As well as linking to parks and open spaces, most of the paths themselves go through woodland, parkland or by the sea at Silverknowes and Portobello.
The map has been created on behalf of the Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust (ELGT) in partnership with The Bike Station, by Mark Sydenham, the originator of the Innertube map concept. The map is part of the wider Innertube map project, a campaign to improve and promote Edinburgh’s 75km of traffic-free off-road paths, characterised by a London Underground style map. This latest Greenspaces edition of the map highlights 54 of the city’s 145 parks, which have easy or close access to the path network, and is designed to encourage Edinburgh residents and visitors to use the routes to walk and cycle to green destinations throughout the City, rather than taking the car.
The Innertubemap project was established thanks to funding from the People’s Postcode Trust, a grant giving body funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, who funded this edition, and continues with a wide range of environmental improvement work along the routes, community volunteering sessions and guided activities, which are publicised on the project’s blog at http://innertubemap.com.
“We’re excited to be launching a green edition of the Innertube map and hope that it will inspire people throughout the city to take to the paths and explore the wealth of green networks, paths and open spaces that Edinburgh has to offer,” said Liz Stewart, Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust.
The map has been designed as an attractive, pocket-sized A7 format, which folds out to show the A3 map on one side, with useful information about environmental organisations on the reverse. The map will be distributed to libraries, community centres, businesses and other organisations over the summer and anyone wishing supplies should contact info@elgt.org.uk.
The Innertube map project continues throughout this year, thanks to further funding from the Central Scotland Green Network Development Fund and Scottish Natural Heritage, supporting environmental improvement and community activity work delivered by the ELGT, with a programme of free community events and activities, all of which celebrate the Year of Natural Scotland 2013.
The Greenspaces edition of the Edinburgh Innertube map, is the third edition of the map since its launch in 2011. This edition follows the publication by The Bike Station of the student edition, funded by SESTRANS and Edinburgh’s universities and colleges, and the first edition, funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The map, designed by the Hillside Agency, has already made a big impact, with over 80,000 copies distributed to date.
Drylaw youths get to work on Granton tunnel art project
On Sunday afternoon a group from Fet Lor Youth Centre, who have been involved in the designing of the art project at the Granton tunnel, got a chance to expand their painting skills with a hands-on session.
Nine of the young people aged between 15-19 turned up and got a chance to make their mark on the project. The young people have been working with artist Chris Young from MS Creative to agree a design for the tunnel and over the past three weeks Chris has been working hard (in all weathers) to get the project completed.
A spokesperson from Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre, who are managing the project on behalf of the Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust said “It was a great opportunity for the young people who have been involved in the designing of this project to get the chance to come to the tunnel and experience this first hand. The young people have really enjoyed being involved in the project and having the chance to learn new skills has been excellent.

Dare you attempt tomorrow’s Postcode Cycle Challenge?
Following the huge success of the Innertube Postcode Challenge event last year, the Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust and The Bike Station are organising this event for the second year running.
The Innertube Postcode Challenge is a ‘Treasure Hunt on Wheels’- and this year there will also be a ‘Treasure Hunt on Foot’ for all you walkers out there! It is a community cycling event, aimed at all ages and abilities, on Edinburgh’s Innnertube Map (below).
As a participant in the event, the aim is to cycle to all ten stands that will be dotted about on the North Edinburgh Innertube Cycle Path Network and collect a postcode stamp at each stand. Everyone has until 4pm to collect all ten postcode stamps (for walkers, the aim is to collect 5 stamps) and hand them in at Fiveways Junction where participants will be entered into a prize draw.
A Challenge Card to collect your stamps will be given to you on the day with a map, or you can download it here and start planning your route!
All participants have the opportunity to win: (more prizes to come!)

The event takes place tomorrow (Sunday 1 July 1) from 11am to 4pm.
This event is one of several activities that ELGT and The Bike Station have delivered to work towards ‘Inflating the Innertube’.
