Local Brown Owl Susan Jeffrey will receive the Thomas Tierney Award for Good Citizenship at next week’s Drylaw Telford Community Council meeting.
The Tierney Award was launched both to remember local activist Tam Tierney and to celebrate the work carried out by volunteers to improve life in the local community -and with thirty years service with the Brownies at Drylaw Parish Church Susan fits the bill admirably!
Community council chairman Alex Dale said: “We had four very worthy nominations for the Award this time round but Susan was the stand-out choice. To have volunteered with the local Brownies for thirty years shows incredible commitment and dedication. People like Susan help make communities better places to be and we are looking forward to presenting the award next week.”
The community council’s monthly business meeting will be held in Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday 25 March at 6.30pm and will be followed by the Award presentation and reception.

Drylaw Parish Church is holding a traditional Scots Afternoon in the Large Hall this Saturday from 12.30 – 4pm.
Haggis neeps and tatties lunch followed by a celebration of Scottish entertainment old and new. Tickets (£7.50) are available from Susan Jeffrey or a member of Fundraising committee.

DRYLAW’S NAN IS ONE HUNDRED
Born before the outbreak of the First World War, Drylaw woman Nan Macdonald celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at Drylaw Parish Church yesterday. Guests were entertained with jazz and traditional Scottish music and shared lots and lots of stories and happy memories.
Nan is quite fragile these days and she is currently in an Inverleith nursing home, but as ever Nan’s husband of 73 years Harry was never far from his wife’s side – looking particular dapper in his maroon jacket and proudly sporting his Foundation of Hearts tie!
The pair met in the late 1930s when Harry was a butcher boy and Nan was helping to look after her father’s house. They shared many interests, particularly cycling and spent many happy weekends together on bike rides up to the north of Scotland.
The Second World War intervened but didn’t end the couple’s courtship – Harry got leave during naval service and he and Nan were married in Stockbridge Church on February 22 1941.
After the war the couple set up home in Drylaw where the Macdonalds had three children – George, Henry and Evelyn. Since then clan has continued to grow and grow, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren came from near and far to join yesterday’s celebrations.
Harry, incidentally, has a wee while to wait for his telegram from the Queen – he claims he’s Nan’s ‘toy boy’ – he’s only 98!
Drylaw Parish Church will celebrate Burns Day with haggis, neeps, tatties and traditional entertainment in the main hall on Saturday 25 January from 12.30 – 4pm. Tickets (£7.50) on sale soon. Braw!
Disgusting, isn’t it? Dog dirt was a common theme of Easter Drylaw Residents Association (EDRA) meetings over the last year, and the topic is sure to figure prominently once again when the residents’ group hold their annual general meeting next week.
EDRA joined with Drylaw Telford Community Council to highlight the issue of irresponsible dog owners in their major campaign of the year. EDRA also continued to raise awareness of speeding motorists on the area’s residential roads with their ‘Twenty’s Plenty’ initiative.

Work has started on fencing at the foot of Easter Drylaw Bank to prevent the grass area being used as a dog’s toilet. EDRA supported an application for funding from Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnership’s Neighbourhood Environment Programme (NEP) to allow the project to go ahead.

Drylaw Parish Church is holding a Trash and Treasure Sale in aid of the MS Society this Saturday from 11am – 1-pm – get in early to bag a bargain! Books, bric a brac and lots more; refreshments also served.
Incidentally last month’s Scots Afternoon at Drylaw Church was a huge success and raised over £150 for charity.
They always tend to do things a wee bit different at Rainbow Club Christmas parties, and so it proved again this year. In the past we’ve had plays and pantomimes, but yesterday guests were treated to a very unusual fashion parade.
A collection of seasonal supermodels took to the catwalk in Drylaw Parish Church, and partygoers were asked to choose their favourite from a prime selection – a penguin, a Christmas cracker, a fairy, a reindeer or Santa, perhaps? Nope, the popular choice was … the turkey!
Let’s hope the poor bird enjoys what little time he has left!
