Lothians and Fife charities benefit from share of £378,000 national boost from leading housebuilder

Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes are celebrating a year of giving after their charitable efforts topped more than £378,000 in donations across Scotland.

Each year, the five-star housebuilder supports a wide range of organisations promoting health, employability and care among many other causes. This is done through various charity initiatives, including Barratt’s Community Fund, which donates £1,500 to a deserving local cause in each of its Scottish divisions every month.

Over the last 12 months, Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes East Scotland has provided financial support to a diverse mix of charities throughout the Lothians and Fife – coming at a vital time when many families, individuals and organisations have been affected by rising costs. In total, £82,500 has been donated to good causes in the region.

At the start of the year, the East of Scotland division named Cash for Kids its main charity partner for 2024/2025 and has since raised a whopping £63,000 for the organisation through donations and various fundraising activities.

The charity aims to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people living locally who are affected by poverty, illness, neglect or have additional needs. The cause also works with grass-roots organisations that aim to make a difference to young lives, directly supporting families who often have nowhere else to go.

In Fife, Fife Gingerbread – a Glenrothes-based charity that provides accessible, approachable and non-judgemental support, advice and information to lone parents – was awarded £1,500 by the housebuilder, as well as nine members of staff volunteering their time over two days at the charity’s allotment project.

Meanwhile, Broxburn-based River Kids received a donation of £1,500 to help support disadvantaged children living in and around the West Lothian community.

Andrew Morrison, Managing Director at Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes East Scotland, said: “We’re proud to support causes that are carrying out essential work in communities throughout Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife. We’re always looking to use our scale for good where and when we can, and our teams have been on hand throughout the year to support this through a mix of volunteering and fundraising, in addition to Community Fund donations.

“There is so much vital work being done throughout the country, and we hope that we can continue to help make a difference in local communities in 2025.”

Plunging temperatures: 4 ways to keep wildlife safe this winter

— Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes Scotland partners with RSPB to compile nature-friendly tips —

In light of the recent cold snap, Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes Scotland is putting nature first to inspire homeowners to create their own haven for wildlife during the colder months.

Combined, UK gardens and balconies are six times the size of Glasgow and Edinburgh, covering 4,000km2 – space that with a little care and attention could make a big difference for nature. This could be as simple as introducing nest boxes and bird feeders to planting wildlife-friendly flowers.

The housebuilder has partnered with the RSPB to create a list of wildlife-friendly features to incorporate into your garden for when temperatures plunge.

Provide shelter for a rainy day

When the weather takes a turn, birds need shelter to keep warm and dry. Nest boxes are the perfect option for small birds and are a popular spot for them during colder nights, with space to cosy up together for communal warmth.

For woodland creatures, creating a deadwood or leaf pile in your garden can be used for shelter and to keep warm.

Across Scotland, Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes properties has planted over 5,000 new trees in development gardens and installed over 4,000 hedgehog highways in show home gardens.

Open an outdoor kitchen

Just like us, birds need extra energy during the colder seasons to keep warm. The smaller the bird, the more likely it is to be affected by long periods of cold weather.

With longer nights and poorer weather conditions, the options for finding food is limited for wildlife meaning they often venture outside of their usual sources in the quest to find food. Without food sources, birds are at risk of starvation, which often kills many birds during winter.

You can help your garden birds by providing some food when natural resources such as berries and seeds are running low, or hard to access because of the cold weather. Find safe places for hanging bird feeders offering calorie-rich seed mixes, good quality peanuts and suet balls. Move these feeders around, to prevent predators from getting used to their location and ensure all feeders are cleaned at least weekly.

Bird landscaping

Consider the plants you grow in the garden, as they can provide a year-round sanctuary for birds. Planting trees and shrubs for garden birds will not only provide a larger nesting space for birds to take cover and keep warm during winter, but also acts a cooling space to retreat to in summer.

Shrubs – such as native holly – provide birds with berries over the winter period, which are particularly popular among blackbirds, bullfinches, sparrows and winter thrushes.

Creating flower beds of varying heights can also provide cover for birds of different sizes. For instance, allowing perennials to remain standing through the winter can offer additional shelter.

Compost leftovers and greenery

To help minimise food waste over the festive period, consider building a compost heap to recycle organic household waste, including peelings and any uneaten vegetables. Our gardens also have a wealth of greenery that are perfect for compost piles, including dead trees, shrubs and grass cuttings.

Not only will it give you compost to fertilise your garden, but it also diversifies the wildlife in your garden, and you may see some robins and blackbirds nesting there come spring.

Douglas McLeod, Regional Managing Director for Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes Scotland, said: “Creating a habitat fit for wildlife can help invite a variety of birds and woodland creatures into your space. This not only makes for an interesting period of birdwatching and wildlife spotting during the colder months but also contributes to the conservation of these species.

“At Barratt, we have a nationwide commitment to creating nature-friendly outdoor spaces of all sizes in our developments. These spaces range from gardens and balconies to communal areas, all of which are now flourishing with life.”

Adrian Thomas, RSPB’s wildlife gardening expert, said: “Whatever size your garden or outdoor space is, it can offer shelter and food to a huge variety of wildlife which is especially important in the coldest months.

“Winter gardens are also beneficial for people! Getting outside, breathing some fresh air and being closer to nature is likely to give your wellbeing a boost at a time of year when it may really need it. As does the chance to watch some of the wildlife that is making the most of your garden.

“Big Garden Birdwatch is a great example of this, showing how taking note of what birds are around us – even just for an hour – can be really valuable, helping us to relax, reflect and feel more connected.”

Barratt Homes’ commitment to creating wildlife-friendly areas across its Scotland developments include:

North Scotland:

  • 3,578 new trees planted throughout developments
  • 2,883 hedgehog highways installed in development gardens
  • 77,722 new sapling hedgerows planted across developments

West Scotland:

  • 1,749 new trees planted throughout developments
  • 1,218 hedgehog highways installed in development gardens

East Scotland:

  • 18 nest boxes in show home gardens
  • 61 swift nesting bricks implemented throughout developments

The UK is home to spectacular wildlife and internationally important habitats, and yet it is in the bottom 10 per cent of countries globally for protecting nature.

Sadly, nature in the UK is in trouble and in need of a helping hand, having lost 38 million birds over the last 50 years, with house sparrows, starlings and song thrushes all considered birds of conservation concern.

Suburban living the ‘perfect balance’ for city dwelling family

Striking the perfect balance when it comes to location can be difficult for house hunters, but the charm of suburban living is enticing an increasing number of professionals and families to the outskirts of the city.

Stuart Brown, 41, and his partner Lucy Forbes, 29, recently took the plunge and moved out of the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh to its leafy outskirts at David Wilson Homes’ Cammo Meadows development.

The couple, who both work as estate agents, weren’t necessarily looking for a new build apartment, just one that had three bedrooms and plenty of living space – a feature that has worked in their favour since welcoming their first child earlier this year.

Stuart, who is originally from Glasgow, said: “Lucy and I agreed that we needed more space, so decided to take the plunge and move from Morningside to the outskirts of Edinburgh.

“We were looking for a three-bed property with some green space close by, and good transport links as we both work in the city centre. As estate agents, we had a rough idea of what we wanted, but we weren’t set on any particular area or house type.

“From the minute we walked into the Shearwater show home, we knew this was the apartment for us. It felt like home. The location, the high-quality finishing touches and the three spacious bedrooms ticked all the boxes for us. We didn’t know at the time, but the ample space would end up being essential as we welcomed our little one to the family.

“The flooring and finishes were also to our liking, meaning minimum work required from us and we could move straight in. However, the living space was what really sold the property. Our apartment has an open-plan kitchen/living area which leads out onto its own terrace. The airy layout really enhances and connects the space, with plenty of light coming from the number of windows throughout.

“We’ve just experienced winter in our new home and, because we get a lot of sun through the windows, we’ve found this helped keep the apartment cosy. It’s a much more energy-efficient property than our last home.”

When they aren’t relaxing in their open-plan living space or on their suntrap terrace, the family venture out into the local area.

Cammo Meadows benefits from having Cammo Estate back onto the development, providing residents and four-legged friends with an array of woodland trails and scenic routes. Cramond’s golden sands are also just a ten-minute drive from the development.

Stuart said: “The development is well located next to Cammo Estate, which has been great for walks at weekends.

“The City Bypass and motorway are also nearby so it’s been easy for us to drive into town or travel to Glasgow or St Andrews to see family and friends. Lucy’s family live just five minutes down the road too, which is always handy with a little one!”

When it came to the final touches, Lucy and Stuart had no doubts that the apartment would be perfect from the 5-star house builder due to the care and attention to detail the builders and the David Wilson Homes team had taken.

Stuart added: “It helped that the buying and moving in process was straightforward – the team quickly responded to any queries and provided clear information on our new apartment as soon as they had it. We really couldn’t fault the customer service.

“Initiatives such as free flooring and a contribution towards our deposit were also massively beneficial in helping us get our key in the door – especially during the cost-of-living crisis.

“As a family, we are thoroughly enjoying living in the suburbs. It’s the perfect retreat from busy city life.”

A final phase of apartments launched at Cammo Meadows on Saturday 30th November. Prices start at £272,995 for two and three-bed apartments. For more information on apartments at Cammo Meadows, visit:

David Wilson Homes welcomes ‘lavish city living’ with launch of new show homes at West Craigs

David Wilson Homes is bringing ‘lavish city living’ to the leafy outskirts of the capital with the launch of its two brand-new show homes at West Craigs Quarter.

David Wilson Homes, which forms part of Barratt Developments Scotland alongside Barratt Homes, is now welcoming prospective buyers to visit and experience The Brechin and The Falkland show homes for themselves.

The four-bed properties, which have been designed by Graeme Fuller Design, have been crafted with families in mind, and those looking for quality and space within commuting distance of the city centre.

Both The Brechin and The Falkland have been designed to capture the feel of classic city penthouses, with subtle touches to add an air of sophistication to spaces throughout the homes.

Kyle Downie, Senior Interior Designer at Graeme Fuller Design, said: “We made a conscious decision to make the design of The Brechin and The Falkland show homes at West Craigs Quarter completely different from what we’ve done at other developments to showcase the houses’ versatility.

“In The Brechin, the lavish scheme was tailored to the ‘city living’ vision we see in capital penthouse suites. While the lounge boasts a large corner piece with built-in side tables and a luxuriant chandelier overhead, the dining area is the perfect place for hosting and can seat up to eight people. The kitchen island also offers another space for gathering.

“In the primary bedroom, the wallpaper is breathtaking with a 3D tree-like element in its champagne finish which is perfect for the affluent scheme. The central pendant and the wall lights in the room illuminate the wallpaper the way it was intended so you can admire the movement in the design.”

However, while The Brechin’s kitchen is the social hub of the home, The Falkland’s lounge is the go-to entertaining space.

Kyle added: “The Falkland continues the feeling of walking through a penthouse but from a completely different approach. While The Brechin’s kitchen is the social hub of the home, The Falkland focuses on the lounge with a beautiful corner sofa and adjacent armchairs.

“The large, solid wood dining table and matching dining chairs with their contemporary design absorb the widely aspired style of neutral tones, textured finishes and natural elements.

“The primary bedroom in The Falkland features a wall framed headboard between two fitted mirrors and two hanging pendants above each bedside, making the whole room immediately feel exuberant when the mirrors reflect the light that the pendants individually emit.

“It’s these small touches that create an air of luxury, helping to make the house a home.”

Idyllically located just minutes from the Corstorphine area of Edinburgh, West Craigs Quarter is surrounded by a host of local amenities and family-friendly activities, such as Edinburgh Zoo and walking routes around Cammo Estate.

A selection of well-regarded schools can be found nearby, including a new primary school, nursery and health centre being built on the site by The City of Edinburgh Council.

Excellent transport links into the city centre, including the Edinburgh Gateway tram and train line and a regular Lothian bus service, are ideal for exploring the plethora of shops, restaurants and the historic UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the city centre.

Edinburgh Airport and the City Bypass are also on the doorstep, allowing easy access across Scotland and beyond.

Anne Ross, Sales Director at Barratt Developments East Scotland, said: “We’re excited to finally be able to open the doors to our two brand-new show homes at West Craigs Quarter.

“Kyle and the team at Graeme Fuller Design have done a fantastic job in designing homes that appeal to both growing families and couples looking to indulge in spacious surroundings and quality touches.

“Mix this with the development’s leafy setting on the outskirts of Edinburgh and you really do have a postcode that offers the best of both worlds.”

A variety of three and four-bedroom homes are currently for sale at West Craigs Quarter, starting at £439,995. A range of incentives are also available to help make the move easier, including Part Exchange and Deposit Boost.

Breathing Space benches at Cammo Meadows development

Leading homebuilders have unveiled two new Breathing Space benches at a development in Edinburgh

Cala Homes (East) has installed a bench at the Cammo Meadows development to help boost mental health awareness, providing a space for locals and residents to take some time out of their day for a quiet moment of reflection.

A second bench has been installed by David Wilson Homes East Scotland who, alongside Cala Homes (East), have jointly funded the benches.

Cala Homes (East) has placed its bench in a quiet corner, at the western edge of the development, beside a local woodland walk and cycle path to provide picturesque views of the historic Cammo Estate.

An inscribed plaque will clearly display contact information for Breathing Space, a free telephone service which aims to help those in Scotland who are experiencing anxiety, stress or feeling low.

Peter McNamara Site Manager at Cala Homes’ (East) Cammo Meadows development, said: “We are delighted to unveil this Breathing Space bench at Cammo Meadows. The bench will act as a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health, and we hope that residents use it for moments of peaceful reflection.

“Its position beside the Cammo Estate is also something we took into consideration, as it means it’s not just those who live at Cammo Meadows, but also the wider community are able to use the bench, not just those that live within the development. This gives everyone a chance to benefit from this peaceful setting and take some time out.”

Tony McLaren, National Co-ordinator for Breathing Space, said: “The benches we have installed help the spread of positivity, as well as encouraging people to reach out to those who need it most. By adding the plaque with our phone number, we hope to make more people aware of the helpline which is available on weekday evenings and 24 hours at weekends. Those looking to speak to a Breathing Space advisor can call 0800 83 85 87.

“We hope the residents and the whole community at Cammo Meadows and surrounding area are able to enjoy the bench, in this serene and calm setting, and that it has a positive impact on the local community.”

Anne Ross, sales director at David Wilson Homes East Scotland, part of Barratt Developments Scotland, said: “The new Breathing Space bench at our Cammo Meadows development is a welcome addition to the site, providing a space for the local community to relax and find a moment of calm amidst busy schedules.

“Residents and locals experiencing anxiety, stress or who are feeling low can also find contact details for a free telephone service on each bench’s plaque. It might not seem much, but these two small corners of calm are a positive step in supporting and shifting the stigma surrounding mental health.”

Barratt Developments to deliver 270 affordable homes in Edinburgh and The Lothians

Barratt Developments is on track to deliver 270 new affordable homes across Edinburgh and the Lothians this year.

Cammo Meadows in Edinburgh, Leith’s Merchant Quay and St Clair Mews in Roslin, will all benefit from affordable housing this year, with a total of 270 homes earmarked for the region.

Barratt Developments – which consists of Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes – is working closely with affordable housing providers and local authorities to construct much needed new homes for both mid-market and social rent as part of its East of Scotland developments. The delivery includes a wide range of homes on each site in order to best meet the affordable need in the area.

Harbour Homes has been working in partnership with the housebuilder and recently completed 43 mid-market and social rent properties at Merchant Quay. These will consist of one, two and three-bedroom apartments.

Meanwhile, Places for People recently delivered 114 properties at Cammo Meadows in partnership with Barratt, which includes one and two-bedroom flats and three-bed terraces.

On the outskirts of the city in Midlothian, 53 social rent properties are in development with Midlothian Council. Due for completion this autumn, these will include two-bed cottage flats and a mix of three-bedroom semi-detached and terraced homes.

Cammo Meadows also has also completed 50 apartments and terraces for sale through Edinburgh Council’s Golden Share Scheme, while Merchant Quay development has recently completed 10 Golden Share homes. The scheme consists of homes which are sold at 80% of their market value, while buyers still own 100% of the property.

While a significant number of plots have already completed, all properties will be ready to move into by October.

Cllr Stuart McKenzie, Midlothian Cabinet member with responsibility for Housing, said: “There is a real and growing need for affordable homes in Midlothian.

Midlothian Council is currently active on 13 sites, building 552 Council homes for our communities. Working in partnership with developers is an important source of new affordable housing and we are delighted to have contracted Barratt to build 53 homes for us at Roslin.

“This mix of flats and houses with two and three bedrooms are due to be delivered ahead of schedule.”

Heather Kiteley, Group Chief Executive of Harbour Homes, said: “We are pleased to have been part of this rewarding partnership which has created 43 new affordable homes in Leith, transforming disused brownfield sites into thriving communities.

“Demand for social and mid-market rent homes in the north of the city is especially high, and we are committed to providing brilliant places to live where they are needed most.”

Katie Smart, Director at Places for People Scotland, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Barratt Homes at Cammo Meadows in Edinburgh.

“At Places for People, we work to change lives by creating and supporting thriving communities and Cammo Meadows is no exception. Working with Barratt Homes we are thrilled to bring 114 new much-needed affordable homes to the area.”

Nick Wright, Development Director at Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes East Scotland, said: “Barratt and David Wilson have a strong track record in delivering affordable homes in the east of Scotland.

“This year alone, we are incredibly proud to be able to deliver 270 affordable homes across our Edinburgh and Lothian developments in partnership with our housing association and local authority partners.

“At Barratt Developments, we’re committed to building quality homes across the breadth of the country, including our East Scotland developments. These affordable homes will enhance the lives of those within the local community by creating modern, energy efficient accommodation in desirable locations.”

Life’s a beach: Make the move to Edinburgh and the Lothians this summer with Barratt Developments

Homebuyers who’ve always dreamt of living by the sea can reserve now and move in in time for summer, with a range of new properties available near the coast in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

An array of two and three-bed properties at Cammo Meadows in Edinburgh, The Strand in Portobello and St Clements Brae in Wallyford, East Lothian are now ready to be moved into ahead of the warm weather, with each development less than a ten-minute drive from golden sands.

Ideally located close to the City Bypass, the properties are perfect for first time buyers looking for work-life balance or those downsizing to quieter surroundings. According to Moneybox, the Edinburgh area is also the fifth most popular hotspot for first-time buyers.

To make the move seamless, Barratt Developments, which includes Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, is currently offering buyers £1,000 for every £20,000 spent, plus flooring included. This cash from the initiative can be used towards a deposit, mortgage repayments or moving costs. A number of selected homes also include upgraded options.

In addition to a high-quality finish, buyers can expect their home to be energy efficient. According to Barratt Developments’ Tackling the Cost of Living Crisis – 2023 Report, more than 55% of Scots are considering buying a new build home to save on energy bills.

The recent ‘Watt a Save’ report from the Home Buyers’ Federation (HBF) showed that around 84% of new builds have an energy efficiency rating of A or B, compared to just 4% of existing housing in the UK. Thanks to advanced systems and technologies, all Barratt homes are now up to 63% more energy efficient, which could save homeowners up to £3,100 per year on bills.

Anne Ross, sales director at Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes East Scotland, said: “Location is key when we build our homes, so we’re proud to be able to offer a selection of ‘ready-to-move-into’ properties in some of the most popular areas in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

“These homes are perfect for first time buyers or downsizers looking to mix the hubbub of the capital with suburban living.

“If people reserve now, they can be moved in in time for summer and the process is made even easier with our current incentives – which include mortgage repayments and flooring, in addition to improved energy efficiency. Homebuyers are urged to move quickly, as we expect these homes to be snapped up fast.”

Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes in the North and West of Scotland also have limited availability on homes ready to move into before summer.

David Wilson Homes reveals three-storey maximalist Cammo townhouse

Maximalism, eye-catching colours and unbridled joy are key themes adorning the inside of David Wilson Homes’ newly launched show home at Cammo Meadows in the north-west of Edinburgh.

As the region’s only three-storey show home, the three-bedroom Ashworth from the five-star housebuilder showcases multifunctional rooms fit for modern family living, designed by leading interior specialists Show Business.

A palette of bold, energetic colours has been used throughout the home, invoking feelings of cheerfulness and happiness – acknowledging a key interior trend for joyful, uplifting and mood boosting spaces recently identified by Wunderman Thompson in its annual trend report.

And with various paint brands proclaiming shades of red as their 2023 “colour of the year”, including Pantone’s Viva Magenta, a deep rose shade was selected for the ground-floor family dining room, working as both a grounding neutral and a touch of drama, complemented by a calming teal shade on the opposite wall. Relaxed textures create a laid-back feel to the room, including wood, soft accessories and fur throws.

Alix Riding, creative account manager at Show Business said: “Personality is key when it comes to styling a three-storey home, due to the vast amount of space.

“In this particular home we injected some fun and humour into the rooms with styling pieces such as artwork featuring jumping dogs and children’s artwork, as well as canvasses covered with splashes of paint to add a playful element.

“Pulling colours from wallpapers is a good guide when choosing cushion colours, and don’t be afraid to mix and match different patterns as this adds to the theme of fun and playful.”

Upstairs, subtle touches of maximalist wallpaper make a statement, including animal print in the family bathroom and striped wallpaper on the stairwell. To demonstrate the flexible nature of a three-storey house, the first-floor lounge with Juliet balcony takes an escapist “getaway” style to invoke a sense of calm above the hustle and bustle of family life downstairs.

On the top storey of the house is the main bedroom with en-suite, which features smooth velvets and panelled walls to create a well curated, smart feel with a wow factor.

Anne Ross, sales director at David Wilson Homes East Scotland, part of Barratt Developments Scotland, said: “We’re really excited to reveal the east of Scotland’s first ever three-storey show home at Cammo Meadows, featuring three uniquely designed floors created for modern family living and with the latest design trends in mind.

“The house sits within a lovely community in the north-west of Edinburgh, less than ten minutes to the beach and just six miles to the city centre.”

House hunters are welcome to tour the show home at Cammo Meadows to get a feel for the property first-hand, as well as discover the surrounding area. A mix of three and four-bedroom homes are available, with David Wilson Homes offering incentives including up to £30,000 towards a mortgage, deposit or moving and running costs.

Modern building methods and materials also mean owners of new build homes can enjoy savings of up to £2,600 per year on energy bills, according to the HBF “Watt a Save” report published October 2022.
