Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes East divisions deliver £131.9m boost to local economy

572 new energy-efficient homes brought to market in East Scotland, supporting almost 2,000 jobs across the region

Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, part of the UK’s leading housebuilder Barratt Redrow, have injected £131.9m in the Scottish economy for the year ending 29 June 2025 through its East Scotland Division, reinforcing their role as key contributors to economic growth, housing delivery and employment across the country.

The premium housebuilders operate across the north, east and west of the country. Through their East Scotland Division alone, a total of 572 new homes were brought to market, including 45 affordable homes.

Underlining their commitment to sustainability, 99% of all homes achieved an EPC rating of A or B. Every home was also built with access to renewable energy sources such as solar thermal panels, solar PV and air-source heat pumps.

With 90% of materials manufactured or assembled in the UK, Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes directly and indirectly supported 1,887 jobs across its East Divisions, its sub-contractors and suppliers. They also generated an estimated £111.6 million in total spend with suppliers and sub-contractors.

The two businesses continue to create high quality communities in some of Scotland’s most scenic and popular locations, from West Craigs in Edinburgh to St Andrews in Fife.

Together, Barratt Homes East and David Wilson Homes East made £4.6m in local contributions, creating 207 new school places in communities and generating more than £22.4 million in tax revenues for reinvestment across the region.

Their approach to purposeful building focuses on creating long-term value through sustainable, inclusive communities. Affordable homes are sold at an average of 36% below equivalent private market prices, helping more people access high-quality, energy-efficient housing.

Environmental commitment remains central to delivery, with eight hectares of green space created through public open spaces and private gardens in East Scotland alongside the installation of 133 electric vehicle charging points. They also supported 18 graduates, apprentices and trainees through its various skills programmes.

Other key findings from Barratt Homes East and David Wilson Homes East Scotland 2025 socio-economic report include:

  • £111.6 million total spend with 326 sub-contractor companies and 294 supplier companies.
  • £15.1 million invested in physical works benefiting local communities, including highways, environmental improvements, affordable housing and community facilities.
  • £16.3 million annual spending in local shops and services by residents of new homes, supporting 157 retail and service-related jobs.
  • £62,000 in charitable donations made directly or via the Barratt Redrow Foundation and 1,058 hours of employee volunteering.
  • £74.6 million of land approved for future investment.
  • 128 nature interventions installed, including integrated nesting bricks, bat boxes, and the creation of hedgehog highway routes.

The assessment was carried out by independent experts who analysed socio-economic impacts through the delivery chain for new housing based upon Barratt Redrow datasets, published research and national statistics.

Maybury pupils start new chapter with World Book Day donation from leading housebuilder

Pupils at Maybury Primary School are celebrating World Book Day with a donation from Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes towards their favourite titles.

The brand-new school, located in the West Craigs area of Edinburgh, welcomed its first batch of pupils back in January – 26 P1 learners who had previously been based at East Craigs Primary since August 2024.

To mark the pupils’ transition, Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes has donated book vouchers totalling £250 for the class to spend on some of their favourite titles.

Councillor Joan Griffiths, Education, Children and Families Convener, said: “It was fantastic to see the new Maybury Primary School open its doors to its first group of P1 learners at the end of January, and I know that the whole school community are excited to celebrate World Book Day.

“We know that access to books and hearing stories is hugely beneficial for our younger learners, helping them to establish the early building blocks for reading, broadening their knowledge of the world and helping to develop their imaginations.

“This welcome donation of book vouchers will help the school to enhance their library and in turn add to the learning experience of children at the school.”

Lothians and Fife charities benefit from share of £378,000 national boost from leading housebuilder

Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes are celebrating a year of giving after their charitable efforts topped more than £378,000 in donations across Scotland.  

Each year, the five-star housebuilder supports a wide range of organisations promoting health, employability and care among many other causes. This is done through various charity initiatives, including Barratt’s Community Fund, which donates £1,500 to a deserving local cause in each of its Scottish divisions every month.  

Over the last 12 months, Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes East Scotland has provided financial support to a diverse mix of charities throughout the Lothians and Fife – coming at a vital time when many families, individuals and organisations have been affected by rising costs. In total, £82,500 has been donated to good causes in the region.   

At the start of the year, the East of Scotland division named Cash for Kids its main charity partner for 2024/2025 and has since raised a whopping £63,000 for the organisation through donations and various fundraising activities.

The charity aims to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people living locally who are affected by poverty, illness, neglect or have additional needs. The cause also works with grass-roots organisations that aim to make a difference to young lives, directly supporting families who often have nowhere else to go. 

In Fife, Fife Gingerbread – a Glenrothes-based charity that provides accessible, approachable and non-judgemental support, advice and information to lone parents – was awarded £1,500 by the housebuilder, as well as nine members of staff volunteering their time over two days at the charity’s allotment project.  

Meanwhile, Broxburn-based River Kids received a donation of £1,500 to help support disadvantaged children living in and around the West Lothian community.

Pupils mark Walk to School Week with Barratt Homes safety donation

To mark National Walk to School Week, Barratt Developments Scotland encouraged schools in Scotland to ditch vehicles and get involved in a number of mini-challenges and games during their walk to school. 

Last year, over 750 schools across the UK took part in Walk to School Week, aimed at making pupils experience first-hand the importance of walking to school.

To coincide with the week, Barratt Homes donated 500 high-vis wristbands and bag charms to pupils at Wallyford school. The items were proudly worn during the pupil’s end of term trip.

It comes as part of Barratt Developments Scotland’s, which includes Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, commitment to supporting children to enjoy their surroundings on their walk to school as they walk over newly completed road at nearby St Clements Wells development in Wallyford.

Kirsty McGregor, Senior Business Support Assistant at Wallyford Primary School, said: “Wallyford Primary School would like to extend their thanks to Barratt Developments for their kind donation of 500 reflective wristbands and keychains for distribution to our pupils during Walk to School Week 2023.

Cammo Meadows Jubilee Tree Planting

Staff from David Wilson Homes took part in a Jubilee Big Tree Plant at Cammo Meadows to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of The Queen’s reign, Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes has planted over 1,500 trees in communities across Britain.

The Jubilee Big Tree Plant saw the country’s largest housebuilder plant trees to recognise the Queen’s wish to create a legacy for future generations.

Douglas McLeod, Regional Managing Director, Scotland said “We wanted to recognise Her Majesty the Queens incredible service to the country and her communities by fulfilling Her Majesty’s wish to plant trees that improve the sustainability of the local environment.

“It was wonderful to bring together residents, staff and local community groups to mark the Queen’s Jubilee celebration.”

Over £106m contributed to the economy by Barratt East Scotland

– Housebuilder supports 1,652 jobs, completes 732 new homes and 13.1ha of green space –

Barratt Developments Scotland, which includes Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, has made a substantial contribution of £256.3m to the Scottish economy, with the housebuilder’s East Scotland division supplying £106.9m in GVA itself.

In the year ending 30 June 2021, Barratt East Scotland has also completed 732 new homes of which 144 were affordable and supported 1,652 direct, indirect and induced jobs across the region.

2021 also saw the largest UK housebuilder reinforce its commitment to creating homes for nature as well as people. The business created 13.1ha of public green spaces and private gardens around the region, the equivalent of 19 football pitches, to help support wildlife on and around its sites.

Barratt is working towards reducing its direct carbon emissions by 29% by 2025 and indirect emissions by 24% per square metre by 2030. In the past year, CO2e emissions per 100m.sq. of completed build area fell to 2.25t. across the East Scotland business.

98% of construction waste was also saved from landfill and 26% of new homes were built on previously developed land, up 54% on the previous year.

“To have contributed over £106m to the economy and supported over 1,652 jobs is a fantastic achievement and we’re determined to do even better this year.”

As part of its housebuilding activity, Barratt East Scotland has made £5.4m in local contributions to help build new facilities and community infrastructure. This contribution includes the provision of 320 new school places.

More than £19.3m has also been spent on physical works within communities, such as highways, environmental improvements and community facilities.

Other key findings from the Barratt East Scotland 2021 socio-economic report include:

·       Increased support for public services with £23.9m in generated tax revenues

·       Over £36,400 donated to local charitable and community causes

·       284 supplier and 335 sub-contractor companies supported

·       Increased support for the UK supply chain with 90% of all components centrally procured, assembled or manufactured in-country

·       More than £10.7m in retail spending by new residents, helping support 114 retail and service-related jobs

The development of new and future talent remains a key priority for Barratt Developments Scotland and 53 graduates, apprentices and trainees launched their careers with the company in 2021, 15 from the East Scotland Division.

The assessment of Barratt Developments’ performance was carried out by independent consultants Lichfields, who analysed socio-economic impacts through the delivery chain for new housing based on Barratt datasets, published research and national statistics.

Scots encouraged to flock to their gardens for National Nestbox Week

It’s National Nestbox Week (14 – 21 February) and Barratt Developments Scotland is encouraging the nation to get involved with bird conservation from their very own gardens.

Garden birds need a safe place to raise their chicks, and it’s both fun and easy for residents to open up their gardens and give them a home for the season. Britain is in need of more nestboxes to help support bird populations, and National Nestbox Week aims to raise awareness of how quick and easy it is to play an important part.

To coincide with the week, Barratt has created an online nestbox quiz for homeowners to learn more about their feathered friends and how to make their own gardens wildlife-friendly for nature’s neighbours. Those taking the quiz are in with a chance of winning up to £100 in RSPB vouchers. 

It comes as part of Barratt Developments Scotland’s, which includes Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, commitment to supporting wildlife on developments and celebrating its national partnership with the RSPB. 

Each entrant to the quiz will be able to learn more about a range of birds as they’re asked to match common species to the homes that suit their needs.

When looking to place a nestbox in a garden, it’s important to find a sheltered, shady location, preferably facing north through east to south-east to avoid prevailing winds and strong direct sunlight. Nestboxes also need to be kept out of reach of cats and other predators.

There are many ways that residents in the country can help the birds in their garden, such as providing a regular supply of clean water by using a bird bath, providing nestboxes and putting the right bird seed out including flaked maize and sunflower hearts.

Family move into new Barratt home for Christmas

A young family’s Christmas dreams are coming true after managing to take a step up the property ladder with Barratt Homes.

The Casey/Malone family; mum Dawn, dad Jamie and sons Jamie (10) and Thomas (4) along with two-year-old Jack Russell Duggee, were already no strangers to a Barratt home. They’ve been living at the homebuilder’s ‘The Strand’ development in Portobello for the past three years in a three-bed apartment a stone’s throw from Edinburgh’s only beach.

After initially being drawn to The Strand because of the location, the beach, surrounding amenities and great schools, after moving in, it was the sense of community within the development that cemented the family’s desire to really make a home there after forming a close-knit group of friends and socialising at the communal green space.

However, when the pandemic hit, so too did the desire for a garden space for the active family to call their own.

After falling in love with the location and the quality finish of their apartment, they didn’t want to compromise or move away from The Strand, so, having already built a great relationship with the Barratt sales advisors, Dawn looked into what larger properties were becoming available in new phases.

Dawn and Jamie quickly fell in love with the ‘Coull’; a stylish three-bedroom home with the coveted private garden space.

Due to the huge popularity of the development, Dawn had the sales team “on speed dial” and luckily managed to reserve a plot amid high competition – with Barratt even helping them find a rental apartment to move into while their new build completed.

Dawn described the whole experience as “smooth, with great communication with the sales team who are always on hand to answer any questions and accommodating with any last-minute changes we made to our upgrades.”

And it’s been a Christmas gift come early, as the move-in date was brought forward from February 2022 to the end of November, and the boys can’t wait to enjoy their new home and additional space over the festive season. In the new year, Jamie has already set his sights on adding a bar at the bottom of the garden where he can enjoy summer cocktails with friends and family parties.

Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes collect top award at national competition

Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes won two of the most prestigious awards at the coveted Scottish Home Awards in Glasgow on Thursday.

The housebuilders collected the top award of the night, Housebuilder of the Year (more than 100 units), for presenting their robust business results which had customer service and employee care at its core.

The UK’s largest housebuilder was plauded for its substantial contribution of £245m to the economy and supporting hundreds of other organisations in the supply chain.

They also collected the Community Contribution Award for their work during the pandemic, which includes donating £1,000 to a deserving cause in each of its three Scottish divisions every month. CHAS, a full family support service for babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions is one such charity.

Over 350 people gathered to celebrate winners in The Scottish Home Awards in a hybrid event that also welcomed guests from home watching live via digital broadcast.

Barratt East Scotland team hikes Edinburgh’s seven hills for St Columba’s Hospice Care

Barratt East Scotland, which includes both Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, has fundraised £16,000 for their new charity partner, St Columba’s Hospice Care.

Taking on the seven hills challenge to reach the top of Calton Hill, Castle Rock, Corstorphine Hill, Craiglockhart Hill, Braid Hill, Blackford Hill, and Arthur’s Seat, 19 Barratt East employees completed the capital city hike in under seven hours as part of their fundraising efforts.

St Columba’s Hospice Care is an independent charity that has been providing vital hospice and end of life care to people with incurable illness and their families for over 40 years. Throughout the pandemic, the Hospice Team has continued to offer their services to those who need it most across Edinburgh and the Lothians – be that at home, in care settings or at the Hospice itself.

The donation from the Barratt East Scotland team will help to ensure the hospice can continue to offer its support to people in local communities across the capital. As well as nursing and medical care, the Hospice offers patients and their families whatever social, practical, emotional and spiritual support they may need, from physiotherapy and counselling, to immersive art and music therapy.

As part of its community benefits programme, the five-star housebuilder works with a wide range of local causes, and has continued to step up its efforts through the Barratt and David Wilson Community Fund.

Now in its third year, the Community Fund pledges to donate £1,000 each month to a charity or organisation in the east of Scotland. Charities are nominated by and voted for by employees of Barratt Homes and the focus for the fund continues to be on organisations that improve the quality of life for those living in the area.
