Fair’s fair – and Fun Days too

West Pilton & Muirhouse Gala is NEXT Sunday – not today!

The school holidays are a distant memory, the nights are already ‘fair drawin’ in’ but it seems the summer fun days go on forever! Yesterday was packed with community events but there’s plenty more on offer in North Edinburgh this coming weekend too:

Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre’s popular annual Fun Day takes place next Saturday from 11 – 2pm and is packed with activities

Along Ferry Road, North Edinburgh Community Art Group is holding an Art and Craft Fair in the Craighall Centre (below) from 11 – 3pm.

Silverlea Care Home on Muirhouse Parkway (below) are also holding a Summer Fun Day on Saturday from 2 – 4pm with lots of fun for everyone – all welcome.

And last – but certainly not least – West Pilton and Muirhouse Community Gala does go ahead – but it’s NEXT SUNDAY (not today!)

Organisers have confirmed: “This year’s gala is at full steam ahead .. It’s been a bit quiet from us as the committee have other commitments too. But your gala on Sunday 24 August at West Pilton Park will be a blast , we have a little something for everyone and hope to see as many people turn out as the last one ..”

Fun kicks off at midday until 4pm.

Celebrate Africa at Craigroyston

We are pleased to invite you to the CELEBRATING AFRICA event on Saturday 21 June at Craigroyston Community High School on Pennywell Road.

The event aims to provide a unique opportunity showcasing African heritage and culture by the African community groups who live/ work across Edinburgh & the Lothians. Themes for the event are participation, heritage, culture and sports.

There will be live African music, dance, cultural performances, stalls, workshops and children activities at the event. Popular traditional food will be cooked on site and served by members of the African community groups.

As Scotland hosts the Glasgow 2014, we are proud to welcome participating African nations and celebrate their heritage. The event is supported by the Big Lottery – Celebrate fund. Granton Parish Church on Boswall Parkway will be holding an Open Day this Saturday from 10am – 4pm. Lots of fun and activities for the whole family and it’s all free!

Hidden gems hunt to launch new community map

There be treasure in Forth!

North Edinburgh community group Living in Harmony has been working with Forth Neighbourhood Partnership to produce a new print and online community map. That work is now complete and a fun family event is being held to launch the new resource.

The Hidden Gems Community Treasure Hunt takes place on Friday 21 March (1 – 3pm) when local families can use the new map to find venues around the area, answer clues and take part in fun activities in each participating venue. The thinking behind this is that once you’ve visited a place and met someone friendly it’s much easier to go back again!

Sounds like fun – all welcome!

Celebrate International Women’s Day at Royston Wardieburn

Royston Wardieburn Community Centre is hosting an event to celebrate International Women’s Day tomorrow (Tuesday 11 March) from 5.30 -8pm. Tickets (£1) are available from the Centre – children and childcare free.

A Centipede spectacular: Muirhouse to light up on Friday!

I work with a community project called Centipede Project. We work with the community of Muirhouse to organise fun events that they would like to see take place. Our upcoming event is Luminous Muirhouse, please find all the information below.

What: Luminous Muirhouse will take place over one evening on 22 November between 4 – 6pm. It is a Glow in the Dark to scale blueprint of an ideal home spray-painted on the ground of a disused car park in the heart of Muirhouse.

This has been designed by Eileen Hall, Edinburgh-based architect in conjunction with pupils from Craigroyston High School. Glow in the dark flat wood furniture will be added to reflect some of the community’s creativity and desires for their area.

Kenny Bean, Scottish photographer has been taking portraits of locals in hands on workshops which will be projected on the church walls (outside).

A local Baton Twirling group will be performing with glow in the dark batons, group taught by Claire Chalmers.

Local musician, James Campbell, will be playing guitar.

Refreshments will be served.

Where: Opposite Muirhouse St. Andrew’s Parish Church on the brown field site, earmarked for development in 2014 Pennywell and the Church itself. Pennywell Medway as Pennywell Gardens is closed for roadworks.

When: Friday 22nd November 4 – 6pm.

Who: Centipede Project a locally based participative organisation, funded by Go For It fund. Artist Natalie Taylor, Project Co-ordinator Jo McArthur

Why: To bring the community together for fun events and empower local people to be active in their area.

Happy birthday Betty – at last!

Betty McVay’s belated eightieth birthday celebration finally took place at West Pilton Neighbourhood Centre last Friday, and the party proved to be well worth the wait.

Most readers will know that Betty has not been well, and she was forced to put her original party plans on hold when she was taken into hospital last month. However regular readers will also know that Betty is a wee battler and there was no way that the milestone party was not going to happen as soon as she was well enough again!

it was almost a ‘This Is Your Life’ event as friends and colleagues from across the years joined Betty and her family at West Pilton – as someone remarked, there were hundreds of years of community activism together in the Neighbourhood Centre that night and it was a great opportunity to share stories and memories.

In a year that’s seen old Greater Pilton lose activists and community characters like Billy Anderson, Brian Robertson, Stevey Hay and Gwen Chrystal, Betty’s party gave the community something to smile about – even if the raffle prizes were among the worst in history!

Belated happy birthday then, Betty – and keep battling!

Get set for Leith Health and Fitness Festival

Looking after our elderly:

In the winter of 2012 a new Charity campaign emerged in Leith called Give a Gift this Christmas. This was an opportunity for organisations and members of the public to donate gifts which were distributed to elderly people across Leith and North East Edinburgh. This was a tremendous success and has led to the development of a Health and Fitness Festival, which will not only raise funds to help the Charity, but will also provide the opportunity for sharing information about keeping fit and healthy whatever your age.

To raise the profile of the Festival there will be a number of key events happening across Leith and wider. Subsequently there will be a range of raffles and smaller events to ensure that the word is out and that people are excited about the festival.

Leith Health & Fitness Festival – Saturday 10 August, Victoria Park, Leith

Our inspiration is to help bring back community spirit! Working together will offer a way to pull all generations together, to mend the cracks and try to give support and care to our local elderly residents.

There will be a range of stalls and events designed specifically for the older community, this will include a marquee set aside for entertainment, amusement and a free raffle, bowling on the green and lots of complimentary events / treatments on the day.

For the wider community there will be:

Stall spaces for therapists and personal trainers (small fee)
Stall spaces for local businesses (Small fee)
Advice on optimum & sports nutrition
Career advice
Youth and Community information
5k fun run (application form below)
Hula Honeys
Fitness demos
Activities for all the family.

If you feel you could support this exciting venture by having a stall, promoting your services, donating prizes for our competitions or raffle, (we have two raffles, a main raffle for everyone and another one for our elderly people). Or volunteering on the day then we would love to hear from you.

30 June date for West Pilton & Muirhouse Gala

This year’s West Pilton and Muirhouse Gala, which takes place on Sunday 30 June, will feature a procession and gala court.

The procession will include local groups, schools, nurseries, a marching band plus much more. The procession will start leave Craigroyston Primary School at 11:45am and parade through the streets of Muirhouse and West Pilton to arrive at West Pilton Park at 12pm.

Yes, the North Edinburgh Community Festival has been cancelled, but September doesn’t have to be festival-free – here’s a timely reminder that Broughton High School will be staging their very own Septemberfest later this month! The big event takes place on Saturday 22 September.
