A Centipede spectacular: Muirhouse to light up on Friday!

Luminous-Muirhouse-Poster-W

I work with a community project called Centipede Project. We work with the community of Muirhouse to organise fun events that they would like to see take place. Our upcoming event is Luminous Muirhouse, please find all the information below.

What: Luminous Muirhouse will take place over one evening on 22 November between 4 – 6pm. It is a Glow in the Dark to scale blueprint of an ideal home spray-painted on the ground of a disused car park in the heart of Muirhouse.

This has been designed by Eileen Hall, Edinburgh-based architect in conjunction with pupils from Craigroyston High School. Glow in the dark flat wood furniture will be added to reflect some of the community’s creativity and desires for their area.

Kenny Bean, Scottish photographer has been taking portraits of locals in hands on workshops which will be projected on the church walls (outside).

A local Baton Twirling group will be performing with glow in the dark batons, group taught by Claire Chalmers.

Local musician, James Campbell, will be playing guitar.

Refreshments will be served.

Where: Opposite Muirhouse St. Andrew’s Parish Church on the brown field site, earmarked for development in 2014 Pennywell and the Church itself. Pennywell Medway as Pennywell Gardens is closed for roadworks.

When: Friday 22nd November 4 – 6pm.

Who: Centipede Project a locally based participative organisation, funded by Go For It fund. Artist Natalie Taylor, Project Co-ordinator Jo McArthur

Why: To bring the community together for fun events and empower local people to be active in their area.

With Thanks to: North Edinburgh Arts, Blacklight, Craigroyston Community High School, Edinburgh City Council, Zoo Arts, Tomorrow’s People, Muirhouse Youth Development Group, Muirhouse Millennium Centre, Don Bosco Club, Borja Prada, Muirhouse Library.

Enter the Muirhouse labyrinth!

Muirhouse St Andrews Parish Church and Muirhouse Centipede Project will formally launch the grass Labyrinth which the Centipede Project have installed in the church grounds at a fun day next month.
Linda Dunbar explained: “We are holding a fun day – Enter the Labyrinth – on Saturday 7 September, from 12noon – 3pm in the church grounds.
As well as lots of Labyrinth activities, there will all be the church’s annual community BBQ, teas, bouncy castles (including one big enough to take adults!), free activities, stalls, and a car-boot-stall type section.
Entry will be free, the BBQ and teas will be by donation, the bouncy castles will be 50p a go, and the stalls will have goods for sale. On top of all of this there will be a number of free activities and crafts, AND the will be free helium balloons.
We are also looking for community groups to come along and take advantage of free tables to promote their work, raise funds, meet people etc etc. These spaces are free for community groups, but need to be booked by emailing
This is going to be a great day and we hope lots of folk from the community will come along and share in the fun.
If anyone wants to book one of the car-boot-style tables (the will be NO room on site for cars themselves), they will cost £7, and can be booked by emailing

Young snappers pick up 121212 prizes

Muirhouse Centipede Project have kindly supplied a photograph of Gemma and Garry Pearson receiving their prizes from Muirhouse St Andrew’s locum minister (and lead Centipede!) Linda Dunbar.

Pearsons

There’s still time to see the exhibition before it finds a permanent home at Muirhouse St Andrew’s – check out previous 121212 post for details.

Gemma’s the little star of 121212!

ChildWinner

Seven year old Gemma Pearson’s photograph of her family Christmas tree is the winner of Muirhouse Centipede Project’s 121212 photography competition.

Muirhouse folk were encouraged to take lots of pictures on 12.12.12 on the themes of love, peace, joy and hope and submit them for exhibition. There was a good response and the wide variety of excellent entries is now on display in North Edinburgh Arts.

Judges loved Gemma’s picture, submitted under the theme of ‘Joy’; the photo captured their hearts. Gemma’s caption reads: ‘I took a photo of my mummy’s Christmas tree it is very beautiful. My mum took hours to put everything on the tree it has 360 white lights. Everyone loves my mummy’s tree but I love it the most. My Auntie Nicola says it looks like a tree out of the Christmas movies. This makes me very happy and excited for Santa coming’.

Winner of the adult competition was some bloke who may have overindulged in mulled wine before submitting his entry, a fantastic ramble about Santa and a helper donkey visiting Muirhouse. Too much Christmas spirit!?

See for yourselves – the 121212 exhibition moves to Muirhouse Millennium Centre today before moving on to Muirhouse Library from 11 – 17 March.
