Rosewell’s Eva crowned Christmas card champion at Barratt’s festive lights switch on

Pupils at a Midlothian primary school have been letting their creativity shine by creating their very own Christmas card designs as part of Barratt Developments’ festive competition.

Barratt Developments Scotland – which includes Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes – invited pupils from Rosewell Primary School to try their hand at designing their very own festive cards, with the winning design being transformed into a physical pack to be given to residents at the housebuilder’s sites.

After judging more than 20 entries, Eva Hall from Primary 6 was crowned champion of the festive design competition, winning a £50 Smyths voucher in the process. The 10-year-old’s design depicts a snowy Christmas Eve sky with Santa’s sleigh flying over rooftops.

To mark her win, Eva and her fellow pupils who took part in the competition were invited to switch on the Christmas tree lights at David Wilson Homes’ Rosewell Meadow development on Thursday 7th December.

All budding artists were awarded a chocolate selection box for their efforts, with Eva doing the honours and switching on the lights.

Shona Richardson, Headteacher at Rosewell Primary School, said: “The pupils were very excited to be asked to take part in the Christmas Card competition.

“We have a number of creative and imaginative pupils at Rosewell so this was right up their street. Some even gave up their lunch breaks to join a ‘Christmas Card Art Club’. It was so popular that we had to bring in extra tables and chairs. It was a hive of festive activity!”

Anne Ross, Sales Director at Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes East Scotland, said: “We were extremely impressed by the designs Eva and her schoolmates created.

“Not only did they capture the joy and fun of Christmas time, but you could also see how much time and effort each pupil put into their work.

“We hope our small events bring a bit of festive sparkle to the communities we are building within East Scotland.”

Pupils’ Christmas cards bring festive cheers to Princes Street

Christmas cards designed by Edinburgh school pupils will brighten up Princes Street this festive season by being displayed on all digital bus shelter screens.

Pupils from across the city entered the competition to design the cards for the Education and Children’s Services of the City of Edinburgh Council and the Lord Provost.

In total 11 designs will be shown on the screens, with three of them – chosen by Education Convener Councillor Joan Griffiths, Lord Provost Robert Aldridge and Executive Director Amanda Hatton as their official Christmas cards – unveiled at a special event.

The winning designs were created by Lucas Virdee (Victoria Primary School), Aastha Arya (Tynecastle High School) and Flora Goater (Echline Primary School).

The Christmas card competition is an annual event but hasn’t taken place since 2019 due to the pandemic. This is now the sixth year that JCDecaux UK has offered lucky pupils the chance to have their designs shown on digital screens in Princes Street.

Lord Provost Robert Aldridge said: “I’m sure all the pupils and their families will be really excited to see their designs on public display and everyone who took part in the contest deserves special mention.

“Our young people are showing real creativity and artistic talent with these cards and the Winter Windows display in Princes Street Gardens.

“It’s great to see the cards promoted on the digital bus shelters as it will definitely bring festive cheer to shoppers!”

Cllr Griffiths said: “This is my first year for choosing winners and it was really difficult due to the high quality of entries. I really want to thank JCDecaux for continuing to support this festive project after an enforced gap of two years as there’s no doubt the young people love taking part.

“Huge congratulations to Luca, Aastha and Flora whose designs will also feature on our Christmas cards.

Carolyn Howieson, Partnership Manager at JCDecaux UK, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with The City of Edinburgh Council, bringing these beautiful Season Greetings designs by local children to digital screens in Princes Street, showcasing the talented young artists in the city.”

St. Peter’s P4 Elsie wins Miles Briggs Christmas card competition

Lothian MSP Miles Briggs has selected the winner of his annual Christmas card competition, which he has been running since his election to the Scottish Parliament in 2016.

This year’s Christmas Card theme was NHS Scotland, to honour frontline workers who have worked incredibly hard throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

The competition was open to all primary schools in Edinburgh and the Lothians, and Elsie Adams age 8, from P4 at St Peter’s Primary School in Morningside, was chosen as the winner.

Elsie won £50 Amazon voucher (sponsored by Morrison Construction), afternoon tea at the Caledonian (sponsored by Waldorf Astoria) and a family day out at Conifox Adventure Park (sponsored by Conifox).

Miles was unable to present Elsie with her prize in person due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Lothian MSP, Miles Briggs, said: “There were some very creative Christmas cards this year and pupils in Edinburgh and the Lothian’s once again showed their artistic talent.

“The competition was very close with hundreds of Christmas card entries from primary schools across the region, with inventive designs from hand sanitiser to the distinctive NHS rainbow.

“What was clear from the entries was that primary school pupils are aware of the tremendous effort that NHS staff have made throughout this year.

“Congratulations to the winner Elsie, whose bright card and fun design stood out as the winner of my 2020 Christmas card competition.”
