Maggie’s Edinburgh receives a helping hand from Amazon

Maggie’s Edinburgh, a local charity that provides support for people living with cancer, has received a £1,000 donation from Amazon Development Centre Scotland in Edinburgh.

The charity welcomed the donation as part of the “Amazon in the Community” programme, which supports communities in and around where it operates in the UK. To mark the donation, the Amazon team in Edinburgh attended Maggie’s 23rd birthday party celebrations and had the opportunity to learn more about the charity’s services.

Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, following the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks.

Built in the grounds of NHS cancer hospitals, Maggie’s Centres are places with professional staff on hand to offer the support people need.

The centres are places to find practical advice about benefits and eating well; places where qualified experts provide emotional support; places to meet other people; and places where you can simply sit quietly with a cup of tea.

The first Maggie’s Centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996 and since then Maggie’s has continued to grow, with 20 Centres at major NHS cancer hospitals in the UK and abroad. Maggie’s also has an Online Centre.

David Freeman, General Manager at Amazon Development Centre Scotland said: “The team had a lovely time visiting Maggie’s for its 23rd birthday celebration and learning about the incredible work being done by the charity.

“Maggie’s offers life-changing care and support to people in Edinburgh, so we’re proud to support the charity as it continues to offer vital services in our community.”

Amy Roberston, Centre Fundraiser Edinburgh, Maggie’s Edinburgh added: “Maggie’s is there for anyone and everyone affected by cancer, offering a programme of support that has been shown to strengthen physical and emotional well-being.

“We’re extremely grateful to receive this donation from Amazon Development Centre Scotland, which goes a long way in helping local members of our community who turn to us for support during one of the most difficult moments of their lives.”

Amazon Development Centre Scotland is responsible for innovations used around the world by the company, including machine learning to power Amazon’s smart features like personalised recommendations and intelligent advertising.
