Two Edinburgh residents with sight loss receive Inspiring Volunteer awards

Two Edinburgh residents with sight loss received awards from Edinburgh Lord Provost Frank Ross at a ceremony to mark Volunteer Week in the City Chambers on Wednesday.

Annette West received an Inspiring Volunteer award for her fundraising work with the national sight loss charity RNIB Scotland. While studying at university her sight deteriorated due to macular degeneration, which erodes the central vision of the eye. A volunteer with RNIB Scotland, Annette took part in all four Kiltwalks last year to raise funds for the charity.

“I’m thrilled and delighted to be nominated for this award,” she said. “Having been supported by the RNIB for over 20 years, I was grateful for the opportunity to give something back.  I feel that being a volunteer for RNIB Scotland has given me confidence and I would like to do more in the future.”

Daryl Stewart (17), who has a cerebral visual impairment, also received an Inspiring Volunteer Award for his volunteering work with RNIB Scotland.

“I first joined RNIB Scotland’s Connect youth group when I was 13 years old,” he said. “In the beginning I was quiet and withdrawn, not really fitting in with the group or any particular individual.

“Over time, however, I found my feet and soon became an active member of the group. Now, at 17, I’m a Connect lead volunteer. RNIB Scotland has worked with me, my family, and my school to encourage me to flourish and develop confidence and self-worth.”
