The transgender flag will fly for the first time above the City Chambers today as Edinburgh shows support for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
Councillors voted unanimously in favour of raising the pink, white and blue and rainbow flags – this year and every year on 17 May – as a symbol of the city’s commitment to removing discrimination against anyone who lives, works or studies in Edinburgh.
More commonly known as IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is celebrated by thousands of people in at least 130 countries around the world in support of sexual and gender diversity.
Council Leader Adam McVey said: “Our Council’s message to the world this Friday is simple – we are proud! We’re proud to be an LGBT+ friendly Council, we’re proud that Edinburgh is such a welcoming city and we’re proud of our diverse communities. These flags symbolise our pride and our stand against discrimination of any kind in the Capital.”
The flags will fly from the roof of the Council Chambers on the Royal Mile from Friday morning until Monday, 20 May.
