Wella in! Edinburgh College student reaches final of national hairdressing competition

An Edinburgh College hairdressing student is on the path to becoming a national champion after winning a regional heat of a major competition.  Level 3 Hairdressing student Gintare Dambrauskaite was one of four student winners at the Scotland, Ireland and North-East heat of Wella’s XPOSURE competition which was held at Granton Campus yesterday.

XPOSURE is aimed at hairdressing students with less than five years of experience, giving them the opportunity to take their first steps onto the competition ladder.

Gintare and her classmate Mikey Emiris represented the College in the regional heat after entering a photographic competition where they were to create a commercial cut and colour look using any branded products. Students are judged on their total look with marks awarded for cut and finish, and colour.

The hour-long competition at the regional heat required students to replicate the cut and finish element of the look submitted in the photographic stage of XPOSURE.

Gintare said: “It’s an amazing feeling to get a place in the final in London, I am so excited. It was a brilliant day getting to see lots of other students creating some fantastic looks and listening to the experts from Wella. I’m really proud to have been named a regional winner.”

Students from colleges including City of Glasgow, Fife, Moray College UHI, Dundee and Angus, SERC Lisburn, South Lanarkshire, Catten and Sunderland made the trip to Scotland’s capital for the heat which was hosted at the College’s Granton Campus.

Gintare and her model, Rebekah Sloan, will now head to the competition’s UK Final where they will compete against regional winners from across the UK at Wella World Studio in London on Monday 3 June.

Gintare said: “I can’t wait to go to London, it’s going to be a wonderful experience to see the Wella studio and to compete in such a big competition – I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully I can do well.”

The event also included an inspirational demonstration by industry guest artists and their models. Edinburgh College student Rebecca Kerr applied the models’ make-up for the demonstration.

Edinburgh College Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Complimentary Therapies curriculum manager Frances Bain said: “Congratulations to our wonderful student, Gintare, it’s a fantastic achievement to reach the final.

“Well done also to Mikey, who did a brilliant job in the heats – we’re very proud of both of our students.

“It was brilliant to host the Wella XPOSURE heat at our Granton Campus. There was a real buzz in each of the competition rooms, with students from across Scotland and Ireland competing with each other, but also learning from each other.

“Competitions like these are a brilliant way to unlock new levels of creativity among our already wonderful students while giving them the opportunity to network and receive feedback from professionals within industry.”
