Scottish Youth Theatre launches its National Artistic Programme

Scottish Youth Theatre unveiled their national artistic programme to an audience of invited guests and supporters yesterday. The projects focus on greater access to artistic programmes, artist development and an international platform to showcase the artistic talents of young artists across Scotland.

Programmes include:

  • Scottish Youth Theatre National Ensemble: Scotland’s national touring company for young people interested in making cross art form radical political theatre
  • Generator: A national professional development programme which will equip young creatives with the knowledge and resilience to thrive in the Scottish theatre sector
  • A new European partnership project with Fundacja Rozwoju Przedsiębiorczego (Poland) and Teatro Metaphora (Portugal). Scottish Youth Theatre have selected 10theatre makers from places across Scotland to represent the country in Poland during a week in June
  • Elevate: A training programme for aspiring artists who want to explore their theatre making skills in site-specific performance
  • Digital Collaboration: A partnership project with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to create new digital work and connect communities and artists
  • Making Space: An emerging artist residency programme delivered nationally throughout the year with host partners and festivals across Scotland.
  • Groundswell: A large-scale participatory arts project investigating land, heritage and migration.

Scottish Youth Theatre’s Creative Producer, Mahri Reilly explained the common thread running through each of the national programmes: ““We are committed to the programme being inclusive and accessible. There is no cost to participate in any of the national programmes and they will be delivered across the length and breadth of the country.

“At the heart of everything is our commitment to cultivating the next generation of Scottish theatre makers, innovators and activists.  The participants will work with acclaimed practitioners and organisations who will inspire them to experiment, take risks and ultimately create groundbreaking, life affirming theatre here in Scotland.”

Scottish Youth Theatre has grown from strength to strength thanks to the support of the Scottish Government and the private sector. As a result, the company have continued to build on their recent successes; which include being shortlisted for a national arts award in 2018 and a critically acclaimed national tour of VENT, a piece created and performed by their flagship project, the National Ensemble.

Chief Executive Jacky Hardacre publicly acknowledged the support the organisation has received at Tuesday’s launch: “The backing received from private business and the match funding from the Scottish Government in the past year, has allowed Scottish Youth Theatre to grow successful programmes, launch inspirational new initiatives and establish meaningful partnerships with the theatre sector across Scotland.

“The projects we announce today have excellence, accessibility and inclusivity at their core. This would not have been possible without the support from companies like Baillie Gifford, Murgitroyd and Arnold Clark and the match funding by the Scottish Government”

Now the programme has been announced, Scottish Youth Theatre are encouraging others to join them in their mission to support young artists of the future.

Jacky added: “Whether you are an emerging theatre maker looking for opportunities to develop, an arts organisation who wants to partner with us, or a potential sponsor or donor who is passionate about opportunities that make a real difference to young people, we want to hear from you.”
