Garden Waste registration window opens this month

Edinburgh residents who haven’t yet signed up for garden waste collections for the current service year can do so from next week.

For £25 per brown bin, garden waste customers are provided with a fortnightly collection.

A new registration window will open at 10am on Monday 4 February, closing at 12 noon on Tuesday 19 February. Permits and collection calendars will be sent out six to eight weeks after the registration period ends and will be valid until 6 October 2019 – the end of the current garden waste service year.

Anyone wishing to continue to receive garden waste collections after 6 October will be invited to renew their permits during the summer, to make sure they have their garden waste collected fortnightly during the next service year, ie October 2019 to October 2020.

Transport and Environment Convener Councillor Lesley Macinnes said: “It’s quick and easy to register online for garden waste collections and you can also do it by calling us or popping into one of three locality offices.

“If you haven’t already signed up for this year’s service, this is the last opportunity to do so before we begin the permit renewal and/or registration process for the October 2019 – October 2020 collection year. Communications will be sent out directly to all current garden waste customers alongside wider publicity about how to renew your permit or apply for a new one.

“We already have 70,747 brown bins registered across the city, which means we can continue to provide collections to more than 65,000 homes while saving over £1.4m towards essential services for the people of Edinburgh.

“Sign up for your permit now and be ready for when spring – finally! – arrives.”

Councillors agreed to begin charging £25 annually for the non-statutory garden waste service in February last year, increasing collections from once every three weeks to once every two weeks.

Residents who receive Council Tax Reduction (formerly called Council Tax Benefit) do not need to pay for the service but they do need to register to receive it.

Anyone who hasn’t registered for the new garden waste service is encouraged to compost their waste or take it to one of the Council’s three Household Waste Recycling Centres.
