Engaging young people for the future of NHS Lothian

NHS Lothian staff recently attended the Skills Scotland Event at Royal Highland Centre. The event was an opportunity for NHS Lothian to showcase different career opportunities to young people age 14 to 19.

The Western General Hospital theatres team provided an opportunity for students to use theatre equipment to look into a model of a patient with bladder cancer and talked through how they would be treated. Student nurses also chatted to the young people about the life of a nursing student and their experiences so far.

Various staff from Health Care Science promoted their roles and gave the students opportunities to try activities including Medical Physics showcasing equipment they maintain, including ultra sound machines and blood pressure monitors.

Physiology talked about their role within a patient’s journey and had spirometry equipment. Life science staff gave the students the opportunity to do some film microscopy and chromatography. This gave students the opportunity to see what’s involved in various roles and learn about the routes into these professions.

Claire Robinson, Employee & Workplace Advisor, NHS Lothian said “Skills Scotland is a fantastic way to engage with the workforce of tomorrow.

“It’s important for NHS Lothian to inspire the next generation of health care staff, the activities available on our interactive stand allowed students a real insight into what’s involved in various health care careers. These activities were met with a lot of excitement and real curiosity from the students.

“Students left inspired and with the information to help them make informed decisions about their career pathway.  We hope to see many of these students working for NHS Lothian in the future.”
