Community organisations to fight funding cuts

The North Edinburgh community pledged to fight Health and Social Care funding cuts at a packed meeting at Muirhouse Millennium Centre last night.

Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre, Muirhouse Millennium Centre, North Edinburgh Time Bank, North West Carers, Pilton Community Health Project and Pilton Equalities Project all saw their funding slashed when bids to the Edinburgh Integration Joint Board’s Health & Social Care Grant fund were unsuccessful. While some may be able to limp on, others – including Pilton Community Health Project – face closure.

Last night’s well-attended meeting heard of the likely impact of the cuts to some of Edinburgh’s most vulnerable people.

152 organisations across the city requested a total of £31 million from the Health & Social Care pot – but with only £14.1 million made available, 35 projects received no funding at all while others, including PEP, saw their funding slashed.

Last night’s community meeting, which was also attended by Ben Macpherson MSP and councillors Cammy Day, Graham Hutchison and Gordon Munro, pledged to fight to get all cuts re-instated and to argue for a bigger slice of EIJB’s £660 million to make this possible.

A steering group is being established to take the campaign forward. If you want to be involved in organising the campaign or would like to hear about other ways you can help, contact Julie Smith at Community Action North (details below).
