Leith social enterprise shortlisted for trailblazing award

Quay Community Improvements (Quay), a subsidiary of Port of Leith Housing Association, has been shortlisted for the Living Wage Scotland Industry Trailblazer Award 2018.

The social enterprise was set up two years ago to deliver social, economic and physical improvements to make ‘Leith the best place to be’ with profits generated being reinvested back into the local community.

Having originally started out as a team of seven covering stair and office cleaning, there are now 18 employees on board and the services offered have grown to include power washing, waste disposal, handyman services, tenancy changeovers and carpet cleaning.

Quay has gone against the grain of the cleaning sector’s tendency to use zero hours contracts by providing secure work with fair, consistent income. This approach, along with good working practices and terms and conditions, means the staff feel safer in their jobs than with previous companies they have been employed with. The staff say they are proud to work for Quay and job satisfaction is high.

Clare Halliday, Business & Communities Initiatives Manager at Quay said:  “We are really pleased to have been shortlisted for yet another award and it would be absolutely fantastic if we could win the honour of being named a Living Wage Scotland Industry Trailblazer.

“We’re all very proud of the progress Quay is making, and receiving this recognition is the icing on the cake for us.”

Winners will be announced at the Living Wage Scotland Expo event on 8 November at Tynecastle Stadium in Edinburgh.
