The Scottish Affairs Committee resumes its inquiry into the oil and gas industry on Wednesday (10 October) with a session focusing on the environmental impact of the sector. Witnesses will include the UK Energy Research Centre, Friends of the Earth Scotland and Scottish Carbon Capture Association.
The session will examine the tension between the Government’s clean growth agenda, including emissions reductions, and the Maximising Economic Returns strategy for North Sea oil. The committee will discuss the impact extracting the predicted 20 billion barrels left in UK oil reserves would have on environmental targets, and what role oil and gas might play in the UK’s future energy mix.
It will also look at the potential for new technologies to mitigate the environmental impact, in particular the development of Carbon Capture and Storage capacity and infrastructure.
