Behind the Screens: Train company launches Edinburgh film and TV walking tour

Train company TransPennine Express has launched a brand-new campaign to celebrate iconic movie and TV destinations across the North and Scotland, bringing filming locations to life via a series of interactive walking tours in three major cities. The Edinburgh tour allows people to transport themselves to ten exciting film and TV destinations.

Research shows that one in five travellers have visited a destination because they saw it on a TV show and with ‘set-jetting’ showing no signs of waning, TransPennine Express is excited to be able to navigate customers along a digitally assisted tour.

Customers can easily access the route, destination points and information online through their mobile phone to experience the exact locations of popular movies and TV shows filmed in Edinburgh such as Avengers: Infinity War, One Day and Trainspotting.

With the choice of two different routes that cover either 5.5 miles or 8.5 miles in distance, visitors can discover up to ten famous ‘Behind the Screens’ locations. Both beginning at Edinburgh Waverley station, explorers can picture the 19th century streets of London from Great Expectations, the complex fictional tales of Cloud Atlas and the fragmented, lifelong relationship of Dex and Em in One Day.

Those taking part can also visit the popular tourist spots of Edinburgh during the tour including Edinburgh Castle used as a filming location for The Angels’ Share and the choice of an optional walk up Arthur’s Seat that’s been used as the location for a number of films including The Adventures of Greyfriars Bobby, One Day and The Illusionist.

Whilst out and about on a TransPennine Express walking tour, there is also the chance to win a city break for 2 that includes a behind the scenes tour and weather masterclass at the ITV studios in Manchester. Two runners up will also win a £50 Netflix gift voucher each. Explorers can enter by simply taking a picture at any destination on the Edinburgh route, sharing them on Instagram or Twitter using #TPEBehindTheScenes and tagging it with #Edinburgh

Caroline Anchor, Head of Marketing for TransPennine Express, said: “Our latest campaign allows walking tour users to discover the rich history of Edinburgh with an added discovery element. As well as appealing to film and TV buffs, the tours are a new and exciting way to explore the city for both Edinburgh residents and visitors. The Behind the Screens walking tours are the perfect day out for groups of friends searching to find the real backdrops of some of their favourite films and TV shows.

“At TransPennine Express, we are passionate about the destinations that we serve and hope that our bespoke tours will help others to discover yet more fascinating insights in to these wonderful northern cities that have so much to offer.”
