Edinburgh schoolgirl Flora wins national art competition

Flora’s poster to be splashed across the side of a National Express coach

An Edinburgh schoolgirl has won National Express’s nationwide art competition to see her drawing splashed across the side of a coach.

Seven-year-old Flora Place’s colourful poster promoting Edinburgh won an online public vote after being shortlisted with three other spectacular designs from youngsters in Scotland who entered the ‘Colour the Coach’ competition.

‘Colour the Coach’ is an annual UK-wide competition, which sees kids aged 5-15 compete to see their designs turned into a special one-off coach livery.

This year youngsters were asked to design a poster advertising their hometown and Flora drew a fantastic picture of the Royal Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle, after she went there on a school trip.

More than 4,000 people took part in the online vote to choose a Scottish winner and Flora won after her design took more than 61% of the votes.

Her nine-year-old sister Eilidh also entered Colour the Coach and reached the finals of the competition but missed out on winning.

Flora said: ‘I was very pleased that I won! I drew Edinburgh Castle because I went there on a school trip and I really like it. I love sticking things and creating art but I enjoy drawing too. Everyone should come to Edinburgh because it is safe and it’s great for kids!’

Now Flora will see her poster turned into a show stopping livery on the side of a National Express coach carrying passengers to and from Edinburgh.

National Express Coach Managing Director Chris Hardy said: “Congratulations to Flora for producing such a fantastic poster of Edinburgh Castle. We were really impressed by the colour and creativity of her design, and the fact that it really brings the event to life. Her picture is going to look amazing when splashed across the side of a coach and we can’t wait to see it.”
