Canine carers at Dogs Trust West Calder were delighted to find out that one of their previous residents recently reunited with her puppies – one year after they all found new homes.
German Shepherd Roxy, who arrived at the Bentyhead Rehoming Centre last June, was heavily pregnant at the time and gave birth to 10 puppies. The litter of 10 aptly named after German cities – Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Rugen, Leipzig, Lubeck, Bamberg, Cologne, Hanover and Heidelberg – received round-the-clock care via a foster carer as part of Dogs Trust’s Home From Home fostering program. Their dedicated foster carer Jayne, went on to adopt one of the puppies permanently, adding them to her existing family of three German Shepherds and five cats.
All 10 puppies found new families after eight weeks, with experienced dog owners; and their owners were so overjoyed to have adopted German Shepherd puppies, they stayed in touch. Together the families regularly update each other via social media on the progress of their pets, as well as having arranged a six month and one year birthday party for them all, including Roxy.
Roxy was adopted by couple Ross and Morven from the Highlands, who attended the birthday celebrations in South Lanarkshire. The families got together for a long country walk with all the dogs, who were also treated to dog-friendly cupcakes in honour of the occasion.
Ross (above) said: “We adopted Roxy after visiting her several times at Dogs Trust, and were invited to join a social media group with the owners of her pups. It was heart-warming to see Roxy’s puppies in their new loving homes, together with reading the excitement the others in the group expressed when Roxy was adopted – it’s great to be able to follow the lives of the pups with so many people who share a combined love of German Shepherds.”
“After a hard start in life, we’re very fortunate to be able to give Roxy the forever home she deserves and a quiet life in the rural Highlands with loads of space to run and play. Thanks to Dogs Trust for looking after her until she found us.”
Jayne, who was Roxy’s foster carer during her stay at Dogs Trust and who then adopted one of the puppies, said:
“When Roxy came to stay with us she greeted me with such a waggy tail and almost fell over! Bless her she was huge, her tummy almost touching the ground!
“When she finally gave birth to the pups they were like three different litters; four huge, five average size and one tiny little boy. When Roxy was feeding she always made sure she fed the smaller pups first, it was amazing to watch her.
As the pups grew and Roxy had more time to herself, she fitted in with my own three dogs, playing and relaxing when away from the pups. I adored and still do adore her, she’s a very special girl who is one of a kind! It’s wonderful that all of the family is still in touch, both the two and four-legged. We had a ball at their birthday party and will do at many more to come!”
