Acting and Performance students from Edinburgh College took the final bow of their studies as they performed a farewell show at the city’s Traverse Theatre. Thirty-five students took to the stage to perform a newly devised three-part piece of theatre based on the theme of ‘revolting’.
The show – PASS Out – is an annual production by the college’s HND students and is the culmination of the students’ time at the college. This year’s Technical Theatre students also worked on the production, supporting with stage management, props and sound.
Pass Out is part of Edinburgh College’s Glow Festival, which showcases the talents of its Creative Industries students.
The acting students from the college’s Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS) teamed up with Scottish director Tony Cownie, Scottish actor Pauline Lockhart and European director Laurentiu Blaga, from the National Theatre of Romania, to produce the three pieces.
Over a two-week period, the students worked closely with the professionals to create powerful 20-minute performances which covered political and social issues and focused on revolting from a young person’s perspective.
This year’s students will now look to begin their careers in the performing arts or go on to further studies, with some already having bagged their first professional jobs. Three students have been signed up by Scottish theatre company Tricky Hat, two will be performing at The Pleasance as part of this year’s Fringe Festival in August, and one has filmed a pilot programme for CBBC.
Edinburgh College Acting and Performance lecturer Scott Johnston said: “The performances the students gave were outstanding and were a fitting way to end their studies with us. Each of them worked really hard in the lead up to the performances to really get across the powerful theme of revolting and what it means to them. Thanks to Tony, Pauline and Laurentiu for helping to bring out the best of the students’ talents and for giving them real-life insight into the industry.
“The students are a credit to the work we do at Edinburgh College and it makes me very proud to see them up on the stage performing to sold-out audiences. The level of professionalism in their performance was fantastic and I’m excited to see what they do next.”
