Heriot-Watt University announces ambitious Graduate Apprenticeship programme

Seven fully funded work based learning programmes will provide an alternative route for students to achieve a degree while in employment

Heriot-Watt University will deliver seven Graduate Apprenticeship programmes, including four new subjects, which are all fully funded by Skills Development Scotland. The flagship courses, which start in September, offer 175 places and bring together academic and practical experience to help meet the changing needs of Scottish organisations.

Flexible entry points mean that traditional qualifications or work based experience can be used to secure places and work based learning means employers benefit almost immediately from the skills being developed by their team.

The courses include Engineering Design & Manufacture; IT Management for Business; IT Software Development; Civil Engineering; Construction & Built Environment and Business Management and applications are currently being accepted from businesses interested in creating Graduate Apprenticeship positions. Entry is open to new and existing employees and comes at no cost to the business.

Dr Gillian Murray, Deputy Principal Enterprise and Business, (above, left) said: “Graduate Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to help future proof businesses by developing skilled workforces in key areas including business management, software and engineering.

“As a world-leading university with five campuses around the globe and a strong reputation in innovation, Heriot-Watt University is ideally placed to deliver programmes which will increase productivity, expertise and engagement of the workforce.

“Heriot-Watt University has always pioneered education having been established to provide skills to businesses supporting the first industrial revolution and now we are arming businesses and students with the new skills needed for the fourth industrial revolution.  Places are limited and HWU are working strategically with key partners and local businesses to maximise the impact of this.”

A business breakfast is being hosted on 31st May to showcase the Construction and Built Environment and Civil Engineering Graduate Apprenticeship degree programmes
