Hundreds attend Edinburgh College Granton Community Day

Mountains of handmade chocolate, energetic music performances and countless palettes of face paint helped Edinburgh College celebrate its first Granton Community Day.

The college’s Granton Campus hosted the celebration of the local area and its people, and the college gave them a chance to to find out more about what it can offer and its role at the heart of the local community.

Students, staff and community groups hosted activities including Indian head massages, hand massages and hair-styling from the college’s Hair and Beauty Therapy Department, handmade chocolate, zingy crepes and other sweet and savoury treats as well as the chance to take on the Engineering team’s virtual welding challenge. Entertainment was provided throughout the day by bands featuring Music students.

The college gave guests an insight into its full-time and part-time courses as well as the services and facilities it offers beyond the student curriculum. These include its restaurants, hair and beauty salons and nursery, which are all open to the public.

The City of Edinburgh Council went along to talk to the community about its regeneration strategy to create a new vibrant, sustainable city quarter. This will include around 4,000 new homes, commercial and creative space with placemaking at the heart of any future development.

Annette Bruton, Principal of Edinburgh College, said: “It was fantastic to welcome so many people to our Community Day at Granton.

“It’s a very exciting time for the area with lots of redevelopment happening around us. As a college, we wanted to demonstrate our commitment to Granton and show our neighbours that there is so much going on here, inside and outside of the curriculum, which they can be involved in.

“This event was a wonderful opportunity for us to strengthen relationships with the families and organisations around us and, as the area is about go through an exciting and significant development, it is hoped this event will help to bring about many future opportunities for us to work closely with our community.”
