Superheroes to the rescue!

Thousands raised for local children on Cash for Kids Superhero Day

The offices and streets of Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife looked a little different on Friday (4th May) as hundreds of people dressed in their favourite superhero costumes to raise vital funds for Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids.

Superhero Day takes place every year and this year’s efforts were of Herculean proportions. For one day only, businesses and individuals are encouraged to dress in their wackiest costumes to have some fun and fundraise for the local charity.

Thousands of donations were received and continue to arrive via text message and at the charity’s headquarters in Edinburgh. Meanwhile, Radio Forth’s Supervan competition saw Boogie, Arlene and Marty from Forth 1’s Breakfast Show take to the streets gathering everything from washing machines to holidays to give away in a competition open to anyone who donated via text message.

Forth 1’s Boogie said: “A couple of years ago we thought it might be interesting to take our Supervan around Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife just to chance our luck and see what people were willing to donate. The response was unbelievable so it’s now a big part of Superhero Day.

“We gathered some amazing prize donations – from a year’s supply of Sunday dinners for the family to washing machines. It just highlights how generous and good spirited our listeners are when we take time out to help young people who desperately need our support.”

The official total raised will be revealed on Forth 1’s Breakfast Show on Tuesday 8th May between 8am and 9am.

Emma Kemp, Charity Manager at Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids, added: “Whether it was the Supervan or people and companies dressing up in some hilarious costumes, it’s clear that everyone has once again embraced Superhero Day.

“As well as putting a smile on everyone’s faces, it’s worth remembering why we do the fundraising drive. There are thousands of children and young people right across our region who’re disadvantaged through poverty or disability and Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids has been doing its bit for more than 30 years to help them with essential supplies, financial support and backing to a range of grassroots community groups. Everyone should be incredibly proud of their superhero efforts.”
