The search begins for the city’s next deserving recipient of the Edinburgh Award as nominations open today (Friday 4 May). Established in 2007, the Edinburgh Award is a way for the Capital’s citizens to pay a lasting tribute to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the city.
Past recipients include authors JK Rowling and Ian Rankin, sports champions Sir Chris Hoy, George Kerr and Ken Buchanan, artists Elizabeth Blackadder and Richard Demarco, and philanthropists Sir Tom Farmer and Tom Gilzean – each of whom has a cast of their handprints imprinted in flagstones in front of the Capital’s City Chambers.
Last year’s recipient, Sir Timothy O’Shea (pictured), followed in the footsteps of Professor Peter Higgs to become the second Professor and academic honoured with the Edinburgh Award for his achievements as Principal of the University of Edinburgh.
Communities, businesses and individuals across Edinburgh have one month to cast their nominations, before a winner is selected by a panel chaired by the Lord Provost.
The Lord Provost, Frank Ross, said: “This is your chance to celebrate Edinburgh’s most inspirational citizens. It is the most prestigious honour in the city and has been presented to many truly outstanding recipients over the years, from household names like JK Rowling and Chris Hoy to local heroes like Thomas Gilzean who, at 97, continues to take shake his tin and fundraise for charity. We need everyone’s help to tell us – who should be next? Who deserves to follow in their footsteps to become the 12th recipient? Please help us recognise the people of Edinburgh’s achievements and cast your vote now.”
Nominations can be made by post or online and must be received no later than Monday 4 June. The Edinburgh Award 2018 recipient will be presented with an engraved Loving Cup by the Lord Provost at a special ceremony and their handprints will be set in stone outside the City Chambers.
Lothian MSP Miles Briggs is encouraging city residents to nominate deserving individuals for The Edinburgh Award 2018. The civic award was established to honour outstanding individuals who have made a positive contribution to the city and have helped it gain national and international recognition.
Miles Briggs said: “The Edinburgh Award is a fantastic way of honouring current city residents or those born in the city who have made an exceptional contribution in their field which has helped raise the city’s profile nationally or internationally. The city is fortunate to have so many people in the business, arts, science and academic sectors who would be worthy winners.
“ I hope many people will consider nominating someone before the close of nominations on 4th June.”
