Supporting young people to make positive Choices for Life

Police Scotland has been working in partnership with ‘Open All Hours’ (OAHs), a physical activity youth-work provision to deliver a series of events, ‘Choices for Life’, promoting healthier lifestyle choices for young people.

‘Choices for Life’ is a Police Scotland initiative aimed at raising awareness amongst young people aged 11-18 years, about the dangers of smoking, alcohol and drugs as well as online safety and advice on how to deal with negative peer pressure.

Constable Greig Stephen of Edinburgh Police Division’s Preventions, Interventions & Partnerships Department said: “Police Scotland is committed to delivering the ‘Choices for Life’ substance misuse programme on behalf of Scottish Government.

“Part of this commitment is to promote preventative messaging around the harms and risks associated with tobacco, alcohol, drugs and new psychoactive substances, highlighting positive life choices to our young people. We’re very grateful to Edinburgh Leisure for their support in hosting these events, as well as the 130 young people who have attended and taken part.”

Andrew McIntosh, Development Officer at Edinburgh Leisure responsible for working with young people explained: “The main reason that Open All Hours’ has been working in collaboration with Police Scotland is that we have similar objectives in promoting healthier lifestyle choices for young people.

“We hope that by giving young people the information to make better and more informed choices about drugs, coupled with leading an active lifestyle, will lead to safer communities.”

Open All Hours is a physical activity youth-work provision that takes place on Friday nights in nine Edinburgh Leisure venues and Wester Hailes Education Centre. It is delivered in partnership between Edinburgh Leisure, the City of Edinburgh Council and voluntary organisations FABB, Canongate Youth and Jack Kane Community Centre.

During March, three ‘Choices For Life’ sessions were held at The Royal Commonwealth Pool, Gracemount Leisure Centre and Ainslie Park.
