Home Instead Senior Care is celebrating five years caring for older people across Edinburgh by holding an Older Person’s Companionship Day alongside the annual Macmillan Coffee Morning. The day will bring together a host of local organisations giving people a chance to meet with those helping with companionship and befriending services.

According to Age UK, around 1 million older people regularly go an entire month without speaking to anyone.  At the event you can find out how you can meet other people and get support, or how you can become a volunteer companion befriender.

The day starts at 10.30am with coffee, tea and cake, but visitors are welcome to pop in at any time. The mouth-watering cakes are going to be extra special, as they are being provided by Mishia from the Harvest Tree based in Edinburgh – so visitors will be pleased to hear that refreshments will be available throughout the day!

At 11am the marketplace of information stalls will open. There will be around sixteen different organisations from in and around Edinburgh.  All providing help and advice with an emphasis on addressing isolation and loneliness for the elderly.  Including: Community Connecting, The Singing Group For People With Dementia, Local Opportunities for Older People (LOOPs), Artlink Arts Access, Care & Repair, Contact the Elderly, Edinburgh Garden Partners, Meal Makers and many more.

Joanna Senew owner of Home Instead Senior Care and the organiser of the day explained why she thinks it is so important to bring people together, “We are proud to be organising this wonderful day for older people, their family and friends and fellow professionals.  The idea behind it is to help people to be better informed about what is available in the area. It will also be an opportunity to share ideas with both our visitors and the different organisations about how we address the growing problem of social isolation amongst older people.

She added, “We will also be supporting the Macmillan coffee morning, raising money for this fantastic charity, one which is close to our hearts. The day should be a lot of fun and we welcome everyone to come along.”
