A brilliant show with hugely talented performers. Laughter and emotional sincerity to highlight the poverty divide between the ‘masters’ who use their brains supposedly and the ‘workers’ who are only allowed to use their hands even if they have brains.
I can’t believe this book was written so long ago and is still valid today. It was my fathers favourite book and now I understand why. He had a beautiful mind and worked with his hands all his life, wrote poetry and was a staunch socialist.
Made me laugh when I think of a couple of community councillors from Granton District who like to act like ‘Masters’. I don’t think they would get the joke though or see their reflection in the story, their brains are nowhere near the size of their egos and appetite for power.
The ominous warning at the end of the play, from the ‘artiste’ Frank Owen, that socialism would be corrupted in the political system, New Labour? They would make my father roll in his grave.
Workers do have brains and opinions, time for them to be heard.
