MSPs join residents to demand a new Winchburgh Train Station

Foysol Choudhury MSP has joined Winchburgh residents outside the Scottish Parliament to deliver a petition addressed to Minister Jim Fairlie, calling on the Scottish Government to name a date for a new train station for Winchburgh.

Winchburgh is an expanding West Lothian community, with Winchburgh Developments Ltd delivering thousands of new homes and some new schools. However, a train station has not been delivered, as a new railway station was not a condition of planning permission.

As a result, homeowners in Winchburgh have been left without commuter links to Glasgow and Edinburgh, leading to a campaign to get the station built.

Foysol Choudhury, Labour MSP for Lothian, has been pursuing the issue on behalf of constituents for almost 2 years and has addressed the issue in the Scottish Parliament with Ministers, as well as making enquiries with other stakeholders such as the Council, local councillors and the Developers.

Yesterday the Labour Lothians list MSP joined the residents of Winchburgh outside the Scottish Parliament to call for action from the Scottish Government and deliver the petition addressed to Minister Jim Fairlie.

Following the rally outside Holyrood, Mr Choudhury said: “Winchburgh community have campaigned for many years for a much-needed train station and I have been raising this for almost 2 years at the Scottish Parliament.

“I was pleased to join the community today in delivering a petition for the Minister-it is time for the Scottish Government to take action, enough is enough.

“The Scottish Government needs to stop passing the buck and take responsibility for ensuring this much-needed and long-awaited station can finally be delivered.

“We must all work together to secure a station for the people of Winchburgh, who were sold homes on a belief it would be a commuter town.

“Instead, the Scottish Government do not seem to be taking these collaborative efforts to solve this important issue of clean and sustainable transport links for Winchburgh seriously.

“I am glad that other stakeholders, including MSPs, local councillors, the local community and the developers Winchburgh Developments Ltd, are instead taking this seriously where the Scottish Government are not.

“I am hopeful this petition and the clear strength of feeling from the community will lead to action from the Scottish Government – let’s get Winchburgh train station sorted!”

Mr Choudhury says he remains committed to continuing to pursue a new Winchburgh train station on behalf of all his constituents and will work with all relevant stakeholders possible to secure the station for his constituents.

Choudhury: ‘Let’s work together and get new station done!’

Labour MSP Foysol Choudhury has called for sustained action to secure a train station for Winchburgh.

Foysol Choudhury, a Labour MSP for Lothian, has been pursuing the issue on behalf of constituents and has addressed the issue in the Scottish Parliament with Ministers, as well as making enquiries with other stakeholders such as the Council, local councillors and the Developers.

Mr Choudhury has raised concerns that he has written to THREE successive Ministers for Transport – Jenny Gilruth MSP, Kevin Stewart MSP and Fiona Hyslop MSP – to ask them to meet with him and other interested MSPs so that they can all work together to try and find a solution for constituents.

Mr Choudhury says he was disappointed to have only received a response on the 10th January 2024, which referenced the correspondence sent to Ms Gilruth, Mr Stewart and Ms Hyslop and said that as Winchburgh is in Ms Hyslop’s constituency, she has recused herself from this project. The letter said that the issue now lies in the Ministerial Portfolio of Patrick Harvie MSP, who says he cannot meet with Mr Choudhury at this time. 

Mr Choudhury has written back to Mr Harvie highlighting the importance of meeting to discussing this issue, for the sake of constituents, and has asked to be invited to an upcoming meeting with the relevant stakeholders.

Mr Choudhury said, following issuing this response to the Minister: “It is incredibly disappointing that I have had to write to so many Ministers, only to finally receive a response which did not offer a meeting.

“We must all work together to secure a station for the people of Winchburgh, who were sold homes on a belief it would be a commuter town-I cannot understand why the Scottish Government has ignored my requests to this extent so many times.

“I even previously invited the Minister to come and see first-hand why a railway station is needed and the importance of clean and sustainable transport links for Winchburgh, yet the Scottish Government still do not seem to be taking this seriously.

“I am glad that other stakeholders, including MSPs, local councillors, the local community and the developers Winchburgh Developments Ltd, are instead taking this seriously where the Scottish Government are not.

“We were able to come together earlier this week to have a very productive conversation on how we can work together towards a new station for Winchburgh and I am hopeful that together, we can get this done!”

Mr Choudhury says he remains committed to continuing to pursue a new Winchburgh train station on behalf of all his constituents and will work with all relevant stakeholders possible to secure the station for his constituents. 

Children of Winchburgh ‘claim’ their new park and celebrate the opening of Auldcathie Playpark

The children of Winchburgh staked their ‘claim’ on their own designed playpark last Thursday. Over 500 children marked the official opening of the Auldcathie Playpark with a picnic and parade of flags featuring their reflections on Winchburgh.

Accompanied by local piper Rab Reid, 53 S1 pupils of the new Winchburgh Academy marched with flags, creating a colourful corridor to the playpark.

The ceremony was topped by John Hamilton, Chief Executive of Winchburgh Developments, handing the playpark over to the children who had designed it. The claim was made with a flag staked on top of the tallest slide mound.

Fiona Hyslop, MSP for Linlithgow Constituency, joined the celebrations by holding the ribbon as Winchburgh Primary pupil Elodie Harris flew down the fly fox. She commented, “The Auldcathie Playpark is such a great addition to the village and the development of Winchburgh.

“Designed by the children who came together to claim the park for the children of the village, their piped parade from Winchburgh Academy, with their personally designed flags, is a memory I will carry for a long time.

“The joy and happiness and energy of the hundreds of Winchburgh children exploring this very big space of their own brand-new play area and play apparatus was very evident. It was a pleasure to join them and speak to them as part of the ‘opening claiming ceremony’ on this very special day.

“Thank you to the developers, park designers and engineers for building this very special place which will form a new heart to this growing village.”

John Hamilton, Chief Executive, Winchburgh Developments Ltd, commented,“It is fantastic to have the first phase of the Auldcathie development finally complete and marked with such a joyous occasion for the children of Winchburgh.

“The children have now claimed the playpark they designed, and we look forward to providing the next phase with more space for them to enjoy.”

The Auldcathie Playpark has received an investment of £300,000 from Winchburgh Developments and was designed by the children of Winchburgh, pre-covid. It consists of over 100 metres of children’s play facilities, with a sandpit and sensory areas for toddlers and young children, and adventure play areas for teenagers.

The most requested equipment now featured in the playpark includes a witch’s hat climbing frame, a 50-metre fly fox and a large slide.

Ian Harvey, Headteacher Winchburgh Primary School, commented, “We were delighted to attend the official opening of Auldcathie Playpark. This was a real-life learning experience for our pupils to see their playpark opened.

“Many learners have been involved in the initial design ideas, model building and visits to the construction site. This is another milestone in the history of our developing community. It was fantastic to share this experience with pupils from across the schools in Winchburgh.”

Mia Hendry flag bearer from Winchburgh Academy commented, “It’s been amazing to have been part of designing our new playpark and now seeing it in real life, it’s even better than we thought it would be.

“Being part of the ceremony today was a great way to open the park!”

Colette Murray Headteacher Holy Family Primary School commented, “It is so exciting for our pupils to attend the opening of Auldcathie Playpark, now sitting adjacent to our newly opened Primary School. Our pupils loved being part of the design process.”

Winchburgh community set to celebrate the return of the gala

The gala has been a feature of the historic mining village for over 85 years and organisers kept the tradition alive during lockdowns by crowning the Gala Queen in a private family ceremony at Duntarvie Castle.

The events take place from Sunday 19 to Saturday 25 June, with the highlight being on the final day featuring the crowning of the 2022 Gala Queen followed by a parade around Winchburgh with over 250 children, the community growers, Winchburgh Wombles, the football club, bands and many more.

The event has been supported by Winchburgh Developments Ltd. Penny Lochhead, Community Engagement Manager, said: “We are delighted to be the main supporters for this year’s Winchburgh Children’s Gala.

“It has been great to support and take part in the return of this event and it is exciting to have the community come together for a week of celebrations, as it continues to expand and grow.”

Winchburgh set to celebrate 200th anniversary of Union Canal opening

A variety of entertainment events are being held for the Winchburgh community this weekend (Saturday, May 21).

Organised by the Winchburgh Community Development Trust, the village is set to be a muster stop for the flotilla as part of celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the Union Canal opening.

Around 26 boats and vessels will muster at Winchburgh on Saturday for the Flotilla 200 which will see two separate fleets sail from Edinburgh and the Falkirk Wheel to meet at Linlithgow on the complete 31.5 mile route.

The Farmers’ Market, the second organised by the Winchburgh Community Development Trust, has been moved to the grounds of Winchburgh Church, close to bridge 32 on the canal to help mark this occasion.

Winchburgh’s very own artist-in-residence, Gill White, will be present to help residents express their creative side. Further entertainment includes face painting, music and dance performances.

The market will feature a number of stalls selling local produce from local game, fruit and vegetables to house interiors and wax melts.

The Flotilla 200 has been organised by Scottish Waterways for All and Scottish Canals, with various musters point along the route. The Winchburgh muster has been organised by the Winchburgh Community Development Trust with support from the Winchburgh Developments Ltd. 

The fleet mustering at Winchburgh is due to arrive between 1pm and 2pm on Saturday 21st May.

Leigh Lauder, Development and Engagement Officer, Winchburgh Community Development Trust, said: “We hope the people of Winchburgh will join the flotilla celebrations and as part of this, we are really excited to be hosting our second Farmers’ Market and welcome groups who will be entertaining people with their performances.” 

The flotilla mustering at Winchburgh will be led by a wide beam canal boat, the Panacea from The Sorted Project, a charity that supports men and women in recovery from substance use and mental health.

“It’s a fine example of how volunteer groups, local communities and businesses can work together to everyone’s benefit.”
