There’s a lot to be done, but organisers of this summer’s Community Fun Day at West Pilton Park remain on-course to make it a day to remember.
Group member Sean Gardiner told NEN: “We have now submitted all our applications for funding, the park and the neighbourhood centre and we are still recruiting volunteers. We’re also looking for traders to book stalls and we ask anyone who wishes to contact us to use wpmcgala@gmail.com. We are also still looking for any pictures taken by the public of previous gala days.”
Jon Black, Kirsty Sutherland and some willing volunteers took advantage of the sunshine to plant fruit bushes and strawberries at the West Pilton Brae community garden on 22 April. If you have some spare time and would like to help with the new community garden, contact kirsty@piltonresidents.org.uk for details.
Living Well’s Chair, Jackie Brash, says “We are delighted to announce that Shazia Majid has joined as our new Mental Health Support Worker. Some people may remember her from when she worked before at PROP & Pilton Community Health Project, as a Volunteer Coordinator, leaving in January 2010 when the funding for the volunteering work came to an end. Shazia is based at our Pilton Centre at 5 West Pilton Park. We know she’ll make a great contribution here and I and all the Members are so pleased that Shazia is back on our team!”
Shazia says: “I am looking forward very much to working with the Living Well Team and having worked in Pilton before, I know just how important the Centre is to its members and how hard staff and volunteers work in providing an excellent service”.
Shazia is particularly looking forward to celebrating the Centre’s work at the Mental Health Arts Festival which will take place later on in the year.

Funding has been awarded by The City of Edinburgh Council to enable Places for People, on behalf of Castle Rock Edinvar, to complete their development at West Pilton, just off the Granton Access Road. With the start on site being planned for Spring 2012 the build period is likely to be around 18 months, and the first homes should be available in Spring 2013.
Places for People
Alister Steele, Managing Director at Castle Rock Edinvar, said “We are delighted that with the funding now in place we can complete this site. It has been a long process as a result of issues with access coupled with changes to economic conditions, leading to the need to revise our plans. The City of Edinburgh Council has worked closely with us to help us to find solutions”.
The proposals comprise 93 units, a mixture of houses and flats. There will be a mix of tenures, social rented homes, mid-market rented homes and low cost home ownership. The design of the new buildings will be similar to that of Castle Rock Edinvar’s adjacent development to ensure the two developments complement each other with a few changes such as the replacement of the timber cladding with a different finish which looks similar and a buff coloured brick finish instead of white render.
The new development will have secure back court areas, with drying greens, children’s play areas and seating, as well as careful lighting to enhance security. There will be trees between the development and Granton Access Road. Private gardens will be provided to the front and back of most ground floor properties, with the majority of front gardens to be provided with low maintenance durable planting and clearly laid out public and private spaces.
