Book Festival’s Greta Thunberg event has SOLD OUT

Live streaming tickets available thanks to The Open University in Scotland

The Edinburgh International Book Festival today announced that in-person tickets to its event featuring Greta Thunberg on Sunday 13th August have sold out in less than 24 hours.

Due to popular demand and thanks to support from The Open University in Scotland, the event will now be live streamed, so audiences can watch from anywhere in the world. 

Access to streaming for this event, which is presented in association with Edinburgh International Festival, will be made available from 12 noon on Wednesday 14 June at https://www.edbookfest.co.uk/greta-thunberg along with information about the 2023 Book Festival programme.

The event, titled It’s Not Too Late to Change the World, will take place at the Edinburgh Playhouse on Sunday 13th August and will be chaired by writer and broadcaster Gemma Cairney.   

The event will begin with a speech from Greta Thunberg, followed by an in-depth conversation about her activism and The Climate Book, the 2022 publication that saw her call on the wisdom of more than one hundred experts, from Indigenous leaders and renowned scientists to activists and people from around the world who are most affected by climate change. 

This will be Greta’s Thunberg’s first public appearance in Scotland since her visit to Glasgow for COP26, the UN’s Climate Conference in November 2021.

As part of the event, 300 tickets have been made available to local community groups and young people, and a special concessionary ticket price of 50% was made available to those under 26 to encourage them to become a part of the climate conversation.

Huge demand for Royal Highland Show tickets

The Royal Highland Show is urging visitors to snap up remaining tickets as demand soars for the event, which takes place next week from Thursday 23rd – Sunday 26th June. 

There are only a few hundred tickets remaining for the Friday and Saturday of the event, which this year is celebrating 200 years since the very first Highland Show took place back in 1822 – the first time in it’s 200 years that two days will sell out ahead of the event. 

With huge demand for Friday and Saturday tickets, the only way to guarantee entry now is to buy in advance. There are still car parking tickets available to purchase for every day of the Show. 

Mark Currie, Director of Operations at the Royal Highland Show, said: “We are delighted that Show goers are clearly as excited as we are about the return of Scotland’s biggest outdoor event. With Friday and Saturday looking like sell-out days, we’re encouraging people who might be holding off to book Friday or Saturday now, or to consider a Thursday or Sunday visit. 

“If for any reason you can’t attend this year, luckily you can still catch the action through RHS TV – it will be broadcast live from the Showground over the four days and available to watch for free on the Royal Highland Show website.” 

The Royal Highland Show, supported by the Royal Bank of Scotland, will take place 23-26th June 2022. Tickets, including for car parking, must be pre-purchased online this year and no tickets will be available to buy on the gate.

The Show will be broadcast online this year via RHS TV, funded by the Scottish Government.

Volunteer Edinburgh are pleased to be working with the RHASS to deliver the Volunteer Showmakers programme at the Royal Highland Show 2022.

The volunteering programme for the RHS has been completely renewed for 2022 which is the 200th anniversary of the show.

Volunteer Edinburgh are recruiting Volunteer Showmakers, who will welcome visitors to the event, providing information to the public and helping to ensure that every visitor has a fantastic time.

The four day event runs from the 23rd June to the 26th June and Volunteer Showmakers will be deployed throughout.

The show, first held in 1822, is the pinnacle of the agricultural calendar. Each year over 1,000 trade exhibitors, over 2,000 livestock competitors entering into 900+competitions (with over 6,500 animals) and tens of thousands of visitors come to the Royal Highland Show to experience the best of farming, food, and rural life. Some key information about volunteering as a Showmaker:

  • Dates: Thursday 23rd , Friday 24th , Saturday 25th, and Sunday 26th June
  • There are two shifts available per day (morning 7am-1pm and afternoon 1pm-7pm)
  • You can volunteer on as many days as you wish, but there is a maximum one shift per day
  • There is a dedicated Volunteer Hub where lunches, snacks and refreshments will be available during the during the shifts
  • Free travel to the Royal Highland Showground on dedicated Lothian Buses services is available to all Volunteer Showmakers
  • We have developed a streamlined on boarding process to ensure you have all the information and support that you need to volunteer with the 2022 Showmaker programme
  • You will need to complete a short online induction
  • You will be issued with a Yoti RHS volunteering card and this will allow you access and is separate from the CTV accreditation.

World’s first gold platinum sovereigns sell out as royal fans rush to own piece of Jubilee history

The world’s first gold sovereign coins to be minted using a gold and platinum alloy – created to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – have sold out in record time.

Created by leading coin experts Hattons of London to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s incredible 70 year reign, the coins feature celebratory portraits of the Queen at landmark moments throughout her seven-decade reign.

And after selling out despite being launched less than three weeks ago, the collection has gone down as the fastest-ever selling product in Hattons of London’s history.

Minted with an exclusive blend of 22 carat gold enriched with 2 carats of platinum, the sovereigns were a world first.

Hattons of London MD, Simon Mellinger, said: “The Platinum Jubilee is a momentous occasion and by using an exclusive blend of 22 carat gold enriched with 2 carats of platinum, we have created a fitting tribute to the Queen’s 70 years of service to our country, that like Her Majesty, will stand the test of time.

“The demand for the product we’ve had has been phenomenal, and has far outstripped supply.

“We expected a lot of interest in the coins, but the speed at which the collection has sold out has been unbelievable. It seems that collectors have recognised the significance of this year’s Platinum Jubilee and have been keen to add a special piece of memorabilia to their collections.

“What’s been particularly interesting is that demand hasn’t just been from coin collectors – there’s been a much wider appeal from the general public, who also want them as a commemoration of this important, and maybe never-to-be repeated, Royal anniversary.”

The coins feature portraits of Her Majesty which had never before featured on sovereign coins, including images of the Queen’s 1952 Coronation, her Silver and Diamond Jubilees, as well as a portrait of Her Majesty around the time of her becoming our longest reigning monarch in 2015.

The design on the smallest denomination in the range, the one-eighth sovereign, features the royal cypher of Elizabeth II with a celebratory garland of roses, thistles, leeks and shamrocks to represent the nations of the United Kingdom. This garlanded-cypher also features on each of the other coins in the series.

Mr Mellinger said there were plans for an additional Platinum Jubilee collection later this year. 

“We normally only bring out one limited collection to celebrate a milestone event or anniversary, but given the interest and the significance of the occasion, we’re currently considering adding to our Platinum Jubilee range with a new collection this year,” he added.
