SESH Hairdressing’s Simon Hill finalises for prestigious Scottish Hairdresser of the Year title

Simon Hill, Owner of SESH Hairdressing in Edinburgh has been shortlisted for the prestigious Scottish Hairdresser of the Year title at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards 2022.

Now in their 38th year, the awards are an annual celebration of hairdressing excellence, recognising the remarkable achievements of stylists from across the United Kingdom.

Regional categories honour the finest hairdressing talent from across Britain with a separate category for International Collection of the Year, while seven specialist categories reward specific areas of hair expertise including Afro, Men’s, Avant Garde and Colour.

Judged anonymously by over 100 leading hairdressers (including celebrity stylists, session stylists, salon owners, previous winners and Hairdressers Journal British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame members), all winners will be announced at a Black-Tie event to be held on Monday 28th November at Grosvenor House, a J W Marriott Hotel on London’s Park Lane.

Simon Hill was named as one of only six finalists in his region after submitting four photographic images demonstrating the breadth of his hairdressing expertise, showcasing evidence of both technical skill and creative ability. He will now submit a further four images for the final round of judging, which takes place in September. Both stages of judging are strictly and independently audited and verified.

‘This is such a proud moment for me’ says Simon. ‘These awards always bring together such exceptional talent and to see my name alongside those shortlisted is mind-blowing.

“I’d love to bring the trophy back to Edinburgh and hope the judges will recognise the love and hard work that has gone into my collection.’

Jayne Lewis-Orr, Executive Director of HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards said: ‘Every year, HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards serve as a reminder of the passion, artistry and expertise that this incredible industry has to offer, and it is a privilege to celebrate the talent and brilliance of creative individuals from across the country.

“In reaching the finals, Simon has demonstrated excellence in all areas of their craft, and an ability to bring together the magical elements that make a photographic collection stand out from the competition.’

Simon recently welcomed Viktoriia Vradii, an internationally renowned hairdresser with her own salon in the heart of Ukraine, Le Salon VRV, to the salon to set up a base and a career for herself in Edinburgh.

Viktoriia also received news from the British Hairdressing Awards that she has finalised for the International Collection of the Year category.

Commenting on the news, Viktoriia said, ‘It’s a huge honour to be a finalist for the British Hairdressing Awards for the second year in a row. I am proud to represent Ukraine on the International stage at such a difficult time for my country.’

Party Season Hair

How To Get The Look

The festive season is the perfect time to get glam. Forget your favourite loungewear and try something new. Maybe a red lip or a brand new hairstyle. Unlike last year, we are able to go ‘out out’ this Christmas and New Year.

Local salon owner at SESH Hairdressing SIMON HILL has put together some styles you can create at home for the festivities:

Cool Girl Texture –

This style is perfect if you like an understated style that still looks cool and pairs perfectly with a sparkly, show stopping outfit.

The key to this look is in the products you use. Use your straightening iron to add as much or as little texture as you like. Slightly bend the hair between the irons in alternating directions to create a subtle shape.

Finish with a texturising hairspray and use your fingers to manipulate the shape and style of your hair. The key to this look is not to be too ‘perfected’ so embrace that slightly undone look.

Product recommendation – Wella EIMI Sugar Lift

Top Knot –

Not just a style reserved for the day before hair wash, but a style that can elevate any Christmas party outfit.

To give this look a polished edge to make it party friendly, spend time smoothing your hair into a ponytail before creating the bun. Use your hair brush to smooth your hair towards the bobble to remove any unwanted lumps.

Take the length of your ponytail and wrap around your hair tie before securing with hair grips. Finish with strong hold hairspray to withstand Scottish winter weather.

Product recommendation – Wella Luxe Oil.

Sleek and Sophisticated –

Bang on trend at the moment is this slick back, sophisticated style. Give this look an update for the festive season with a deep side parting like we have done here.

Use a lightweight hair gel or pomade to remove unwanted texture and smooth your hair back towards the nape of your neck. If you have short hair, try leaving it down, smoothed behind your ears. If your hair is longer, try tying it into a low bun or a sleek ponytail.

Product recommendation – Eleven Australia Dry Shampoo Volume Paste

Vava Volume –

This style embodies Christmas time and is sure to turn heads on NYE.

Use your hairdryer to add lots of volume to your hair before your begin styling. Depending on the look you want, you can add a soft wave through your hair once dry. Take the top section of your hair and create that volume at the front to give an air of drama to your style.

Use a back comb to create this and apply dry shampoo to the roots of your hair to give it more grip and hold. Secure with hair grips towards the crown of your head before using your fingers to gently pull out loose strands. This look is guaranteed to take your Christmas night out outfit to the next level.

Product recommendation – Eleven Australia Dry Finish Wax Spray.

SESH: The local hair salon that welcomes everyone – even your dog!

🐶

In 2021 we hear lots about ‘inclusivity’. We know that it’s important that we are kind to one another and we understand that we must accept people for who they are and we celebrate individuality. But what are businesses and hair salons, actually doing to show their support and be actively inclusive?

Leith salon owner Simon Hill feels strongly about this and has shared the approach that his salon, SESH Hairdressing, have adopted. The salon have gone above and beyond to show that really, everyone is welcome:

At SESH Hairdressing, everyone is welcome. From the moment you enter the salon, you will be greeted warmly and welcomed by a member of the team. They will have already looked at your notes on the system and know your name as well as your preferred pronoun and any areas of sensitivity for you. This instantly puts the client at ease and reassures them that they have entered a completely friendly space.

For guests that may be experiencing issues with hair loss, perhaps they are in the midst of a gender transition or have come into the salon wearing a head scarf for religious reasons, SESH will always offer their secluded area, away from the main salon floor. This gesture shows that the salon is conscious and supportive of your choices.

For busy mums who are unable to arrange child care or possibly doggy care, SESH empathise completely with this. That’s why the salon is completely dog and child friendly. Making your life easier to pop in during a busy day. We all have them!

Passionate about welcoming everyone, and helping those they can, SESH Hairdressing work closely with MND Scotland, who support those suffering Motor Neurone Disease.

The salon is renowned for their annual fundraising efforts. Furthermore, the team at SESH are all trained to service those sadly suffering MND or similar illnesses in the salon. The chairs and positions are spaciously separated (before Covid required this) and the back wash area in the salon is completely comfortable with neck rests and adequate room for guests to relax.

At SESH their goal is to welcome each guest that walks through their doors and ensure everyone feels welcome. The salon have gone to great lengths to ensure all communities are heard and included at SESH Hairdressing.

SESH’s Simon says ‘Stick to the Shore’

October has been an incredibly tough month for the hospitality industry,  facing another forced closure and further uncertainty surrounding jobs and moving forward.

Leith hirdresser Simon Hill of SESH Hairdressing wanted to do something to show support and gather momentum. The ‘Stick to the Shore’ initiative Simon has rolled out is designed to rally the locals of the shore in Leith and remind them to support one another during this time.

Simon and the team at SESH Hairdressing are offering local hospitality workers basedin  the Shore, 25% off all hair services. This applies to appointments made with selected members of the SESH team. This initiative is in place until 20th November whilst the hospitality industry  returns to work and finds their feet again.

SESH are running a social media initiative to encourage their followers to ‘Stick to the Shore’ too. When any SESH client supports a local shore bar or restaurant by purchasing a voucher or using their takeaway services, they will receive a complimentary hair treatment at SESH Hairdressing.

Small acts of kindness are crucial during this difficult time.

SESH Hairdressing and Simon Hill have always been passionate about their local area at the shore and this small gesture is their way of supporting the community.

Simon Hill commented: “It was important to us that we not only offer local hospitality workers some money off but also do our bit to ensure our audience supports them too.

“By sticking together and showing each other support we can all come out of this stronger. We hope everyone sticks to the shore and supports those who really need us just now.”

Local salon goes the extra mile ahead of re-opening tomorrow

SESH Hairdressing in Leith has gone above and beyond standard requirements to ensure the health and safety of their clients and team ahead of reopening tomorrow (Wednesday 15th July).

Following the enforced closure since March, the salon is a different space than it was pre Covid-19 and they have implemented processes to ensure safety and minimise impact on the environment.

The team supported local Edinburgh based company, Be Safe, by having branded fabric face coverings made for the team. These Breathe Easy masks will keep the salon team safe and ensure all clients remain protected. The face masks can be washed after use to minimise waste from disposable masks. In addition to this all team members will wear face shields.

The salon is known for their caring nature and going above and beyond to ensure an enjoyable experience for their clients. It was important to SESH Hairdressing to make sure the salon visit remained a luxurious experience and believed the standard issue plastic capes which are popular post Covid-19 would hinder this.

To combat this, SESH have decided to have laundry installed in the salon which means clients will still receive the soft gown they were used to prior to the closure. All gowns will be laundered after one use, and this will dramatically reduce the waste SESH dispose of. Not only is this initiative in the interest of clients, it is also in the interest of the environment.

An extension of this caring approach which is instinctive to SESH Hairdressing and Salon Owner, Simon Hill is the avoidance of any surcharges as they reopen. It is apparent lots of salons are adding a Covid-19 charge to their clients bill to cover the cost of the required PPE.

SESH Hairdressing believes this to be within their duty of care for their clients and team and therefore will not be adding any charge to their bills. Instead a small fee between £2 – £6 will be added for any additional work involved due to the overdue nature of the appointments.

In order to make the new normal easy for clients to adapt to and understand, SESH have been using their social media channels to communicate a clear visual of what clients can expect. This will continue into the salon with clearly marked ‘SESH Sanitise Stations’ throughout the salon and clear markers through the salon to ensure clients keep a safe distance and adhere to the guidelines set out by government.

Salon Owner, Simon Hill commented: “The salon reopening is long awaited and myself and the team are all so excited to get back to doing what we love. We have taken the necessary steps to make the salon as safe as possible.

“As we believe strongly in our duty of care to our clients, we have also gone the extra mile to protect the team and clients. This also led to our decision to avoid any Covid-19 surcharges as we feel it is our responsibility to safely proof the salon for their enjoyment.”
