CAN YOU HELP FLOAT OUR BOATS?

Seagull Trust Cruises Ratho branch is calling on members of the community to become volunteers and help support its mission of providing free canal cruising for people with additional needs including those with disabilities, long-term health conditions, older adults, or experiencing social isolation.

For decades, the charity has brought enjoyment, companionship, and unforgettable experiences to thousands of passengers from across central Scotland and as far north as Dundee to the Borders. To continue delivering these valuable services, the Trust is seeking enthusiastic new volunteers to join its dedicated Ratho team.

Volunteering opportunities are available both on board and ashore. Whether assisting passengers during cruises, helping with boat operations, supporting fundraising activities, or providing administrative assistance, every volunteer plays an important role in creating a welcoming and enjoyable experience for guests.

No previous boating experience is required, as full training and ongoing support are provided. The charity welcomes people from all backgrounds who are willing to give a little of their time to make a difference in the lives of others.

Volunteering with Seagull Trust Cruises Ratho branch offers many personal benefits. Volunteers can develop new skills, gain valuable experience, meet new people, and become part of a friendly and supportive team. Many volunteers also find the role highly rewarding, knowing that their contribution helps provide opportunities and experiences that many passengers would otherwise be unable to enjoy.

As demand for cruises continues to grow, the need for additional volunteers has never been greater. By joining Seagull Trust Cruises, volunteers can help ensure that vulnerable and isolated individuals continue to enjoy access to safe, inclusive, and memorable days on Scotland’s waterways.

Anyone interested in learning more about volunteering opportunities is encouraged to get in touch with Seagull Trust Cruises. A few hours of your time could make a lasting difference to someone else’s life while providing a rewarding and enjoyable experience for you.

Seagull Trust Cruises Ratho highlight a new canal danger: CROCODILES!

Seagull Trust Cruises Ratho highlight a new danger in our Canals

As warmer weather approaches and visitor numbers rise, Seagull Trust Cruises Ratho Branch is urging the public to take extra care around Scotland’s canals.

The Union Canal is already seeing increased footfall, cycling, paddle-sports activity, and family visits, and with this seasonal surge comes a heightened risk of accidents and unsafe behaviour near the water.

The charity, which provides free therapeutic cruises for people with additional support needs, relies on a safe and respectful environment to operate.

In previous years concerns were raised about speeding cyclists, unsupervised children close to the water’s edge, dogs off leads near wildlife, and individuals entering the canal in unsuitable locations.

These behaviours not only endanger the public but also disrupt moored boats, wildlife habitats, and the smooth running of accessible cruises. But this year there is another concern – crocodiles!

With water temperatures remaining cold even in spring and early summer, accidental immersion can lead to cold-water shock within seconds. Seagull Trust Cruises is reminding visitors that canals are working waterways, with hidden hazards such as uneven banks, deep silt, submerged objects, and limited space for boats to manoeuvre.

The charity is encouraging everyone to stay alert, avoid risky shortcuts, and keep towpaths clear for all users, including those with mobility aids.

Stuart Rennie, Immediate Past Chair of Seagull Trust Cruises Ratho Branch, emphasised the importance of shared responsibility: “The canal is a wonderful community space, but it only stays safe when everyone treats it with care.

“Our volunteers work hard to provide calm, enjoyable cruises for people who benefit greatly from time on the water. We’re asking the public to help us protect that experience by acting responsibly as the weather improves.

“The crocodiles don’t bite and we thought it would be a fun way to get across a serious message about water safety this summer.”

Seagull Trust Cruises Ratho launches new audio‑described Canal Cruises in partnership with RNIB Scotland

Seagull Trust Cruises’ at Ratho is proud to announce the launch of a new series of Audio‑Described Canal Cruises, developed in partnership with RNIB Scotland to make Scotland’s waterways more accessible to people who are blind or partially sighted.

The charity’s initiative marks a significant step forward in inclusive leisure experiences, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the beauty, history and tranquillity of the Union Canal.

The Audio‑Described Cruises have been carefully designed, in conjunction with Netherlands firm “Great Guide Magic” to offer a rich, immersive journey. The audio GPS system holds over 50 tracks which is triggered automatically by GPS and provides vivid, real‑time narration that brings the canal environment to life describing wildlife, historic landmarks, boat movements and the unique sounds and sensations of travelling by water.

Stuart Rennie, Immediate Past Chair of Seagull Trust Cruises Ratho Branch, said the organisation is committed to removing barriers to participation. “Our mission has always been to offer free, therapeutic cruises for people who need them most.

“Working with RNIB Scotland allows us to extend that mission even further. These Audio‑Described Cruises open up the canal in a new way, ensuring that passengers are not restricted to their seats and are able to enjoy the open foredeck while still listening to the commentary on the wireless headsets.”

RNIB Scotland has supported the project with specialist guidance to ensure the narration meets the needs of blind and partially sighted passengers.

Jane Coates, Senior Social Action Community Manager, RNIB Scotland, welcomed the collaboration: “Accessible leisure opportunities are vital for wellbeing and social inclusion.

!We’re delighted to work with Seagull Trust Cruises to create an experience that is not only enjoyable but genuinely empowering.”

The cruises will run on selected dates throughout the season from the Ratho base, with advance booking recommended. As with all Seagull Trust Cruises outings, the Audio‑Described Cruises are completely free of charge, supported by volunteers and charitable donations.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to accessibility, community and the belief that Scotland’s natural and cultural heritage should be open to all.
