Sainsbury’s: search is on for local charity

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury’s Blackhall are calling on customers to cast their votes and help a registered local charity receive a year’s worth of fundraising and awareness support. From Wednesday 28 May, customers will be able to vote for their favourite local charity either in store or by visiting www.sainsburys.co.uk/localcharity.

The retailer’s Local Charity scheme is now in its sixth year and gives customers the chance to vote for their favourite local charity to be considered to receive a year’s worth of support from their nearby Sainsbury’s store.

This year’s voting ends on Sunday 8 June. After voting closes, a shortlist of nominations will be drawn up and the stores’ colleagues will then invite the three charities that they feel best fit the needs of the community into store to talk about how Sainsbury’s can support them. The chosen charity will be selected based on the reasons given and the store will announce their chosen charity in July.

Local charities that have benefitted from the scheme in previous years at Sainsbury’s Blackhall include The Guide Dogs for the Blind which was Blackhall store’s Local Charity partner between July 2011 and May 2012 and still collect for them. Over £20,000 was raised from the partnership, which helped towards sponsoring 4 guide dog puppies. Meanwhile, the store’s Local Charity partner last year was Maggie’s Centre and the partnership helped to raise over £8,000 and raise awareness of the centre.

Sainsbury’s Blackhall Store Manager George Paton said: “We’re looking forward to supporting a local charity which touches many of our customer and colleagues’ hearts. The scheme gives us the chance to make a real difference to important causes in the community and we hope our customers get behind this year’s voting stage and nominate their favourite local charity from 28 May”.

Sainsbury’s supports Scotland’s senior youth club

FetLor

Sainsburys Blackhall have been helping FetLor Youth Club do some much needed repairs to their old building to keep it going until funds can be raised to build a new one …

Young people from FetLor have written to thank the Craigleith store for their help, attaching some before and after photos to show the difference that’s been made (attached below).

FetLor Operations Manger Lindsay Coulton said: “FetLor Youth Club is Scotland’s oldest Youth Work Project, set up in 1924. The Club is currently housed in a wooden hut built in the early 1960’s on Crewe Road South.

“It has served the North Edinburgh community well over the past 40 years and holds many fond memories, but it can’t last much longer and the cost of repairs is rising every year. Thanks to Sainsbury’s Blackhall some of the urgent repairs that the Club needs have been carried out, making the building safe and secure for our young people and allowing us to commit funds to the new building project.

“The support of organisations in the local community, such as the support offered to us by Sainsbury’s Blackhall, will be key to the success of our project. If you are interested in helping, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at FetLor Youth Club – we would be delighted to hear from you.”

Recycle your Christmas cards at Sainsbury’s

Local residents are being encouraged not to throw their old Christmas cards in the bin and instead help support the environment. Customers at Sainsbury’s Blackhall can start the New Year by making a positive impact to the environment and recycle their cards at the Craigleith store.

Customers have until Tuesday 14th January to bring in any of their old cards, with a collection box situated at the front of the store. The recycling drive is part of the retailer’s partnership with the Forest Steward Council UK.

The collected cards will be recycled by Sainsbury’s and it will make a donation to the Forest Stewardship Council UK (FSC) in the New Year based on the volume of cards collected in its stores. Last year it donated almost £9,000 to help the FSC with its work to promote responsible management of the world’s forests.

The initiative has grown this year, with collection boxes now in over 1,000 supermarkets and convenience stores throughout the country. Sainsbury’s online customers in Blackhall can also have their cards collected from their homes when they receive their online shop, making it even easier to recycle and help reduce the amount of household waste going to landfill.

Sainsbury’s Blackhall Store Manager George Paton said: “We had a really positive response from our customers last year and with their help, we’re hoping to make an even bigger contribution this time. It’s a great way to continue that goodwill feeling and ensure your cards are put to positive use, which is all part of our No Waste to Landfill commitment”.

Rosie Teasdale, Deputy Director, FSC UK added: “Sainsbury’s donation provides essential support for our education and awareness-raising work, helping us to support people in the UK protect the world’s forests. Recycling paper results in less waste going to landfill, it reduces the pressure on forests, and it’s helping to give future generations the gift of healthy forests.”

Additionally, all ‘paper’ wrapping paper can also be placed in the Christmas card recycling collection boxes to support this activity [Sainsbury’s sells over five million rolls of wrapping paper each year – that’s enough to stretch from London to Tokyo and back].

The retailer achieved zero waste to landfill at all stores in 2013 and customers can also recycle batteries, mixed paper and card, mixed cans, mixed glass and plastics throughout 2014 at the Blackhall store’s recycling centre, which complements existing kerbside collections. Meanwhile, customers can also recycle their clothing and other items like DVDs and books at the recycling centre to support Oxfam.

Get your votes in: Sainsbury’s seeks local charity partner

Local residents in North Edinburgh have the chance to find Sainsbury’s Blackhall a new local charity to support. It’s the fifth year of the retailer’s ‘Local Charity partner’ initiative, which gives local registered charities the chance to receive a year’s worth of fundraising and awareness support from store colleagues.

Customers and colleagues at Sainsbury’s Blackhall have played a big part in the success of the Local Charity partner initiative. Last year, their generous donations helped to raise £ 6,487.00 for St Columba’s Hospice.

Louise Stirton, Senior Fundraising Manager at  St Columba’s Hospice (pictured below with Sainsbury colleagues) said: “Working with Sainsbury’s Blackhall over the last twelve months has made such a difference to our cause. They have raised a fantastic amount of money which we are putting towards our new building.  A big thank you to all the staff and customers for their generosity.”

There are even more ways to vote this year. Alongside nomination forms and a drop-in box, now available in-store, customers can , for the first time, nominate online – either via downloading a voting form via Sainsbury’s website  www.sainsburys.co.uk/localcharity or by emailing their nomination to Local.charity@sainsburys.co.uk.

Sainsburys Blackhall Store Manager David Bainbridge said: “Our work with previous Local Charity partners over the years has been really successful in letting our customers have their say. We hope our customers can take the time to vote in the coming weeks and give a local charity that’s close to their hearts the chance for us to support them”.

The winning charity will be announced in June.

Sainsbury’s support for St Columba’s Hospice

Just a quick update on how we are getting along with our Local Charity of the Year 2012/13 – St Columba’s Hospice.

The staff at Sainsbury’s in Blackhall are big supporters of St Columba’s Hospice, as are all their customers. Since 2012, the store and its shoppers have raised over £6000 by collecting loose change at the checkouts and bag packs.  Thank you to everyone for their support.
