NEN back on the streets next month

NENfrontpageNorth Edinburgh’s own community newspaper will be printed again next month. The North Edinburgh News (NEN) will be delivered to thousands of homes across Forth and Inverleith, with copies of the newspaper available in community venues across the area too.

NEN’s Community Directory has  always been an important section of the paper, listing schools, groups and organisations’ names, addresses and telephone numbers. It’s probably about time we revised this to include website addresses, Facebook details and Twitter info too – it seems this social media thing is catching on …!

Send us your contact info and we’ll include your details it in our bright new Community Directory – and there’s NO CHARGE for this service!

NEN to lead on local communications project

keyboard (2)

North Edinburgh News (NEN) is to lead Contact in the Capital – North, a pilot programme to improve communications across the Forth and Inverleith areas.

A project board, comprising representatives from community councils, the local Young Peoples Forum and Neighbourhood Partnership conveners has met over recent weeks to agree performance targets with NEN, following a recent Neighbourhood Survey on local communications conducted by North Local Office.

The survey found that local people clearly like many different forms of communication, and get their news from a variety of sources!  As the survey proved inconclusive, NEN will produce both digital and printed media – we plan to produce three newspapers before the end of this financial year and our digital presence will also be improved and enhanced.

And we’ll be working with community councils. schools, youth groups and community organisations to ensure that what we produce is what the communities of Forth and Inverleith want and need – and that it’s interesting, fun and informative.

We’ll be in touch over the coming weeks – and we’ll keep you updated on the blog – but in the meantime we would love to hear your suggestions, ideas and opinions. Why not comment on this article or email northedinnews@gmail.com?

How do you like your news?

newspapers (3)

How do you get your information? How do you find out what’s happening in your local area? TV, radio, newspapers, social media, newsletters, posters, emails, leaflets … there are so many different ways to be kept informed, but what works best for you?

Forth and Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnerships are supporting an initiative to improve local communications, and they need your help to get things right!

How do you currently access information and how would you prefer to receive communications? Please complete the attached online survey at:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NorthComms

It should only take a few minutes to complete or, if you prefer, this can also be done using the printable version (attached below).

If friends or colleagues don’t go online – and many people still don’t have access to a computer – please let them know about the survey; why not print off a copy for them?

But do it soon – the survey closes in two weeks on 31 May!

Good news at NEN AGM?

Agenda NEN AGM 12 November 2013

Item No 7.5 Contact in the Capital – Community Communication Pilot

The North Edinburgh News has had some good news in the run-up to tomorrow’s annual general meeting. Last week, the city council’s Policy & Strategy Committee agreed that North Edinburgh is one of three neighbourhoods selected to pilot ‘community-based information initiatives’.

Since the decision was taken to scrap ‘Outlook’, the city council has been looking for new ways of improving communications and getting information out into communities, and the £50,000 ‘Contact in the Capital’ pilots will now run for twelve months in the North Edinburgh, Gorgie/Dalry and Craigmillar communities.

The council support for NEN, which it describes in background papers as ‘a locally well-regarded newspaper and blog’, is both welcome and timely. NEN last appeared in print form back in June and since then has remained alive through this online blog until decisions on the paper’s future could be made.

It’s now thought that the council support can help support a NEN relaunch, although the NEN’s voluntary board members have still to discuss the detail of what is being proposed – NEN remains an independent community organisation managed by local people.

It’s hoped that more information about how the scheme could work will be forthcoming at NEN’s annual general meeting (it’s on the Agenda, attached), which takes place tomorrow (Tuesday 12 November) at Spartans Community Football Academy at Ainslie Park. All welcome.

Walkathon support hotting up!

Support is hotting up – just like the weather!

North Edinburgh’s art, community and health centres are preparing to welcome walkers with open doors – despite the NEN Walkathon taking place on a Saturday there is a healthy interest in being part of this community event (writes Ann Confrey).
In addition to Edinburgh College Granton Campus who are kindly welcoming walkers and allowing The Hub to be used for the START and FINISH of the Walkathon on Saturday 20th July, we have confirmation that:
North Edinburgh Arts Centre
Muirhouse Library
Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre
and Pilton Community Health Project
will also be OPEN and that management, staff and volunteers look forward to welcoming walkers with refreshments and information on the facilities, support and activities they offer.
Do your bit and join us – ask family, friends and neighbours to sponsor you to take part in the Walkathon. Download your sponsor form or collect one from Reception at Granton Campus.
Don’t want to ask for sponsors? That’s OK, simply turn up and join in – have fun and discover what’s on your doorstep and if you decide to donate a pound or two to your community newspaper there will be a collection box at the registration desk!
We look forward to seeing you at
10.00am on Saturday 20th July!
