Martha Docherty 12.6.1929 – 01.08.2014
Sadly, we have to report that one of our community has died at the grand old age of 85. Born 12 June 1929, Martha Docherty was a much loved member of the “Sunshine Club” and also St. Paul’s social club.
A kind and generous spirited lady, much of the old school, Martha loved both clubs and the company and especially looked forward to the trips out that both afforded their members.
Her love of dogs often stopped a gentle stroll through -St Andrews – Pebbles’ and every town north of the borders. This love was only up-staged by the lunch break, which just had to be fish and chips!! This picture (below) is the only one in which Martha was encouraged to break a lifetime habit and elect for “St.Andrew’s style Steak Pie”!
We will all miss you Martha, and our thoughts are for your immediate family and friends, our memories are of you – Thank you for them all.
Martha’s funeral will take place at St. Paul’s in Muirhouse on Friday 8 August at 10.00am and then on to Craigmillar Castle Cemetery for the committal. This will be followed by light refreshments back at St. Pauls Halls in Muirhouse.
We will never forget our Martha.

I work with a community project called Centipede Project. We work with the community of Muirhouse to organise fun events that they would like to see take place. Our upcoming event is Luminous Muirhouse, please find all the information below.
What: Luminous Muirhouse will take place over one evening on 22 November between 4 – 6pm. It is a Glow in the Dark to scale blueprint of an ideal home spray-painted on the ground of a disused car park in the heart of Muirhouse.
This has been designed by Eileen Hall, Edinburgh-based architect in conjunction with pupils from Craigroyston High School. Glow in the dark flat wood furniture will be added to reflect some of the community’s creativity and desires for their area.
Kenny Bean, Scottish photographer has been taking portraits of locals in hands on workshops which will be projected on the church walls (outside).
A local Baton Twirling group will be performing with glow in the dark batons, group taught by Claire Chalmers.
Local musician, James Campbell, will be playing guitar.
Refreshments will be served.
Where: Opposite Muirhouse St. Andrew’s Parish Church on the brown field site, earmarked for development in 2014 Pennywell and the Church itself. Pennywell Medway as Pennywell Gardens is closed for roadworks.

Muirhouse Millenium Centre has had to change our service provider to Go Daddy from the free Google Site, as free Google sites have a limited memory capacity and could not handle our archive news, etc.
Please visit our new site, which had to be renamed to:

A group of overseas students have been attacked and robbed in Muirhouse. The incident happened outside the Millennium Centre on Muirhouse Medway on Wednesday night.
A dozen foreign exchange students were confronted by a gang of 15-20 local youths, both males and females, aged from nine or ten up to 18 years of age. Two of the students were assaulted and robbed and another two students received minor injuries.
A Police Scotland spokesman said the attack took place at about 22:00 on Wednesday and added: “This was an unprovoked attack on a group of foreign students who are currently staying with host families in Edinburgh. Inquiries are continuing and we are determined to find those responsible for this attack. Additional high-visibility police patrols are in the area and anyone with any information is asked to contact us.”
Stevey Hay’s funeral will be held today at 12pm in Warriston’s Lorimer Chapel.
Stevey, a hugely talented musician, died of a heart attack on 3 July at the age of only 51.
Muirhouse man Stevey was well known locally as the welcoming face of Muirhouse Millennium Centre until he was made redundant last year, but his musical talents as a blues singer and guitarist from an early age ensured he would be appreciated by a wider audience on far bigger stages.
Stevey loved making music from an early age and formed his first band, The Eploited, in 1978 at the tender age of sixteen. He never really stopped playing since, and Stevey’s new band was due to appear alongside blues legend Muddy Waters’ son Mud Morganfield at Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival later this month with his new band, Stevey Hay’s Shades of Blue.
Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival producer Roger Spence said: “We were shocked and saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Stevey Hay.
“He was a much-loved regular performer at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival and was due to play in a headline show alongside Muddy Waters’ son in the festival this year. His unique brand of rocking, good-times blues will be a huge loss, not just to the festival, but to the blues world as a whole.”
A truly talented, friendly and warm guy, Stevey is survived by his wife Louise, daughter Jasmine and sons James and Steven.
Muirhouse Millennium Community Centre’s annual general meeting will be held in the Centre on Friday (14 June) at midday. The AGM – and business plan launch – will be followed by a sponsored walk to raise funds for the Centre’s summer playscheme. All welcome.
