Don’t judge our young people too quickly

Some of the youngsters in Muirhouse are given a hard time by others, but here we show the other side of them and prove we should not judge the majority by the minority.

Some youngsters came along to the Centre and volunteered during their summer holiday period and we thought it was a great idea. The lads went at it with gusto, tidying the garden as our older retired volunteer was on his annual vacation, and as shown in the photo sweeping and hoeing the paths and car park spaces. No task was beneath these young lads, and they were polite, friendly and hard working.

We would like to thank them all and ask others not to judge our young people too quickly.

Sponsored walk to support Muirhouse summer programme

Once again Muirhouse Community Centre are raising funds for their month-long summer programme for the children of the area. The sponsored walk takes place on Friday 27 June, leaving the Centre at 1.30pm.

Every year, the local community and groups within the Centre and local people have responded to this fun-filled day – and TSB’s Black Horse have once again added their support alongside many other prominent companies.

The walk, which is supervised all the way, is to Cramond and ends in refreshments for all back at the Centre.

Sponsorship forms can be collected from the Centre Office during opening times. Bring the family or enjoy the day meeting friends, but have fun with us!

New clubs for young people in Muirhouse

Muirhouse Community (Millennium) Centre

We are pleased to announce that four new children’s clubs opened in May.

These four clubs are funded for one year by the Social Justice Fund, Total Craigroyston and CLD.Each group will have space for 16 young people and be supported by at least two professional youth workers – they will run in 3 eight week blocks with a different focus for each block i.e. getting physically active, new hobbies, joining in wider community activity and a half day outdoor adventure.

Millennium Centre on target to break visitor record

Muirhouse Millennium Centre is on track to break it’s annual attendance record, set last year.

MMC’s Jim McGinty said: “With the increasing popularity of this Centre comes the best figures for attendances. In the first six months of this year we have welcomed 8722 visitors through our doors. This means we are once again on stream to break through the figures of last year”.

All welcome to an open meeting to start a local fight-back group in Muirhouse to resist the bedroom tax and the cuts.

We want to create a strong independent local group to:

· stop any evictions for rent arrears due to the cuts : if needbe by defending homes against the sheriff officers

· battle for the complete abolition of the bedroom tax

· fight for all the rent arrears from the bedroom tax to be written off – and for all who have paid the rent increase to be paid back

· support all local people affected in making an appeal against the cut to their Housing Benefit and/or in applying for a Discretionary Housing Payment

· be a way for local people to organise grass-roots resistance: we do not support any political party

· link-up with other groups in North Edinburgh, round the city, Scotland and Britain to co-ordinate our fight-back

· oppose all the cuts – why should we pay for the greed of the rich and for the crisis of their unfair system?

Letter: Calling all crafters!

To all the crafters in North Edinburgh:

I’m a local resident and enjoy crafting. Crafting can be a really satisfying but lonely hobby at times – I run a small craft club as part of my volunteering at Muirhouse Millennium Community Centre on a Friday from 11am-3pm.   It’s the type of club that you can bring your own crafting to do at your own pace over a cup of tea and chatting to others – it’s friendly, welcoming, informal and fun.   We do have a supply of crafting goodies if you want to just have a go at something and there is always our supply of craft magazines to thumb through to get inspiration and ideas from!
All it costs is £1 – only £1, and that includes the tea/coffee and biscuits!

Help catch these Millennium Centre thieves

Two thieves stealing cash and food from Muirhouse Millennium Centre have been captured on CCTV, and the footage has been posted on YouTube in the hope that the heartless robbers can be caught.

The incident happened last Wednesday afternoon, when the Centre – which is already suffering financially after a series of funding cuts – was visited by the two men. One of the men distracted a wheelchair-bound volunteer at the front desk, while the other sneaked into the kitchen and stole £155 from the locked till and a single packet of bacon from the freezer – despite there being another nine packs inside!

Millennium Centre staff at the centre have now posted CCTV footage capturing the theft on YouTube in a bid to shame the pair. The video appears with the message: “This is not a rich centre. The money that was taken goes towards running the clubs and paying the bills so the thieving scumbags should be ashamed of themselves – stealing from children and old folk. If you know him let the police know!”

Centre manager Peter Airlie said: “The older man started to talk to the volunteer at the front desk. He said one of them was just out of jail and they had thought the community centre was the housing association, as he was trying to find ­somewhere. The other one went through to the cafe area and took money from the till and bacon from the freezer. We really just want to see them named and shamed – they’re the lowest of the low.”

The men were then seen getting on a bus at Pennywell Road in the direction of Ferry Road.

One of the suspects is described as a white male in his mid-twenties, 6ft 2, of heavy build with short brown hair, clean-shaven and wearing black, thick rimmed glasses. He was wearing a light blue and white Adidas jacket with blue stripes down the arm and dark jogging bottoms.

The other man is aged between 40 and 50, around 5ft 4, with a local accent, of slim build, had a shaved head with a receding hairline and a “prominent chin, forehead and a weathered face”.
