Scotland is home to more than 1500 species of lichen, more than 85% of the total species found in the UK, and is recognized for its clean air quality and abundance of lichens.
Despite this prevalence, lichens are far less likely to be identified and surveyed by members of the public and citizen science initiatives than vascular plants.
This project seeks to increase awareness around lichen biology and ecology, uncovering the environmental importance of lichen species.
Join Lichen Biodiversity Scientist Dr Rebecca Yahr and researcher Toby Mills on a walk around Granton’s Eastern Breakwater to explore the abundant community of marine lichen species at the site.
The walk is accompanied by the creation of a new interactive digital guide. The interactive guide also forms part of the Art Walk’s UnderCurrent Exhibition at the Art Walk Porty Festival Hub (7/8 & 14/15 September).

We are looking for Trustees to work with the existing Board during this exciting time of development of the Western Harbour.
We meet for 2(ish) hours once a month at Madelvic House.
Discussions are ongoing with City of Edinburgh Council regarding the refurbishment of the beautiful, listed, Madelvic House.
Also, we are in contact with the Lar housing association who will be developing the Madelvic car factory into 28 flats.

Edinburgh College Art Students Invite You to Celebrate ‘Contemporary Closure’ at Granton Hub!
Contemporary Art Practice (CAP) HND year 1 students are seeking closure, and you’re all invited to the party with an end-of-year exhibition.
Contemporary Closure is an art exhibition being held at granton:hub (Madelvic House), put together by first-year CAP students to celebrate the end of their first year at Edinburgh College’s Granton campus.
Join the HND CAP students on opening night, 31st May from 6pm – 9pm to help them celebrate. You’ll get to see a preview of the work and meet the next wave of contemporary artists over drinks and nibbles.
The exhibition will then run from June 1st – 6th. Times vary, with the exhibition being open 10am – 4pm over the weekend, then 2pm – 6pm on weekdays.
Gareth Hutchison, events co-ordinator, said of the event: “The amount of exciting creative talent emerging from Edinburgh College ‘s Contemporary Art Practice course at Telford Campus is astounding and needs to be presented in a public gallery.

The exhibition will feature paintings, prints, sculptures, collages and more, with themes including nature, technology, rituals, the body, and mental health (for visitors with children, parental discretion should be advised).

About HND Contemporary Art Practice
Contemporary Art Practice is a rewarding studio-based HND that provides a broad and advanced visual education for students who have a strong interest in developing skills, knowledge and awareness of Contemporary and Fine Art practices.
CAP students have the opportunity to develop individual practice concerning their interests and benefit from having their own studio space to work in from the start of the course. They are encouraged to research, develop, contextualise and evaluate their concepts and practice in response to their subject choices.
Grassroots Remedies offer our consultations on a sliding scale to make them more financially accessible, with a reduced price option for ‘Good Neighbours’ – local residents of Granton, Pilton, Muirhouse & Drylaw – and a ‘General Rate’ for anyone outside this area.
Appointments are offered in person at our clinic in the Granton Hub – and phone or Zoom appointments can be available on request.
The clinic is run by Ally Hurcikova, a professional Medical Herbalist registered with the American Herbalists Guild & the National Institute of Medical Herbalists.
All treatments have a Good Neighbour Rate for people living in Granton, Pilton, Muirhouse & Drylaw (typically EH4 1, EH4 2, EH5 1 and EH5 2 postcodes), and a general rate for those coming from outside this area.
Granton:hub History group are looking for new members!
The current group would welcome anyone with an interest in local heritage. Members meet on a Saturday morning in the granton:hub archive room, on average every 6-8 weeks, depending on activities.
Joining the group gives members a chance to meet socially, but also deploy any experience they may have in activity planning, researching and writing up stories from the archive, working with archive volunteers, etc. Please get in touch with community@grantonhub.org if you have any questions.

Immerse yourself in a nurturing environment where you’ll receive guidance on fundamental drawing techniques, perspective, and basic human anatomy.
Teaching Approach:
Get ready to be inspired! Each week, you’ll encounter diverse poses and fresh concepts carefully crafted to challenge and expand your artistic perspective. Our instructors will offer valuable insights to enhance your approach to drawing from life models.
What You’ll Learn:

Gain a solid understanding of perspective and basic human anatomy, effectively applying these concepts to your life drawings.
Develop versatile skills in capturing life models through various poses and mediums.
Cultivate newfound confidence in nurturing your distinct style in life drawing.
Prepare your artwork for a group exhibition.
Required Resources and Costs:
We provide easels and drawing boards for your convenience. To begin, simply bring your preferred paper (A3 size or larger) and your choice of drawing materials. Options may include pencils, charcoal, chalk, colored pencils, or pastels.

29-30 June Summer Drawing Exhibition / Summer Show at Granton:Hub
There’s just days to go before Bronwen Winter Phoenix unveils her artwork in a solo debut exhibition at granton:hub – based in Madelvic House – over Easter weekend, with opening night on Friday (29th March), 6pm – 9pm.
The Edinburgh-based artist will also deliver live demonstrations for visitors who will be able to watch her paint within the gallery space throughout the day on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st from 10am – 4pm.
Although this is Bronwen’s first solo exhibition, she recently had four pieces of work displayed at Edinburgh Palette as part of an open call exhibition from Awright Projects. DISCOVERY will showcase new works, along with some pivotal pieces for Bronwen.
An ex-journalist and Galaxy Award-nominated fiction author, Bronwen is currently studying contemporary art practice (CAP) at Edinburgh College’s Granton campus, and is involved in the local art community there – including being on the committee of student-run hubCAP Gallery.
Bronwen said: “I’m really excited to be showcasing my work in the welcoming setting of granton:hub. It definitely feels like I’ve been on a bit of a journey with my art the past couple of years, and this exhibition is the culmination of that, really.”
She continued: “Since I started painting again, I’ve been the happiest I’ve felt in my life, and I never want to stop. I feel like this is exactly where I need to be right now, but I’ve only managed to get here with the support of everyone around me, which I’m incredibly grateful for.”
Having been discouraged at a young age from pursuing her art dreams, Bronwen turned to writing instead, and until more recently, it’s how she had earned a living with journalism and her marketing agency.
Bronwen said: “It just goes to show, you should never let ANYONE discourage you from following your dreams. I feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunities I do now to pursue an art career, and I’m only just getting started.”
Since she first started painting and working with both traditional and digital media, Bronwen has worked with two national charities.

Ever since she picked up a paintbrush for the first time in roughly 20 years, Edinburgh-based artist Bronwen Winter Phoenix has been on a journey of realisation and uncensored passion.
DISCOVERY is Bronwen’s solo debut exhibition in which she shares many of her major pictorial and sculptural artworks created on that journey of realisation, predominantly exploring the human condition. The way we’re fuelled, moulded, twisted and pulled by connection, love, and loss, as well mental health and inner demons. Her work highlights the physical, the moral, and the psychological, with even a bit of whimsy thrown in at times.
Bronwen has so far been commissioned by two national charities, and four pieces of her work were recently displayed at Edinburgh Palette as part of an open call exhibition, where they were well received.
