Racecourse has it licked with free ice cream at Luca’s Ice Cream Family Day

Musselburgh Racecourse have got it licked at their next race meeting where they will be giving away a free ice cream to every child.

Teaming up with legendary Honest Toun ice cream maker, S Luca, the East Lothian course’s Luca’s Ice Cream Family Day on Tuesday 19 July has something for kids of all ages.

The afternoon gets underway with the always popular pony racing taking place on the home straight in front of the grandstand, approximately one hour before racing gets underway, and setting the tone for an exciting family day out.

Adding to the high summer festivities, Forth 1 breakfast king Boogie in the Morning will host a children’s disco during the afternoon.

With free fairground rides and free face painting keeping the kids fully entertained, adults can enjoy the thrill of the Flat with seven competitive races kicking off at 1.50pm.

As with all Musselburgh race meetings, children aged 17 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult, and once inside the racecourse all children’s entertainment is free.

S Luca has been selling ice cream in Musselburgh since 1908 and it is still made to an old family recipe using locally sourced milk, butter and double cream.

The company founder, Luca Scappaticcio, originally from Cassino between Rome and Naples,  learned the art of ice cream making from a Swiss chef when he worked in the kitchens of the North British Hotel on Princes Street in the early part of last century.

Today, still run by family members, S Luca sell their ice cream from what is possibly the world’s only Rolls Royce ice cream van – which was built in 1923 for the Marquis De San Miguel and purchased by Luca Scappaticcio in 1937 and converted for commercial use.

Aisling Johnston, Musselburgh Racecourse’s commercial manager, said: “With the support of Luca, we are dishing up their delicious ice cream free to all  kids, while legendary radio presenter Boogie is in charge of the music and dancing.

“Before the racing gets underway we also have pony racing and other entertainments during the day, including fairground rides and face painting, are all free. For mums and dads, grans and grandads and all other family members, the first of our seven Flat races is off just before 2pm.

“It promises to be a fantastic day out and there are a wide range of food and drink options available for all budgets and to satisfy all tastes.”

Gates open at noon on Tuesday 19 July, the first race is at 1.50pm and the last race is at 5.15pm.

Pride takes centre stage at Musselburgh Racecourse

Specially designed Racing With Pride jockey silks appeared for the first time at a Scottish racecourse yesterday as Musselburgh celebrates Pride Month.

Leading racehorse owner, Gerry McGladery, swapped his normal blue and yellow colours for the distinctive Pride colours for all his horses competing at the Racing TV raceday (Mon 27 June) at the East Lothian track, as will The Musselburgh Lunch Club syndicate.

The silks were created by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) to increase visibility of LGBT+ support within racing and after a public vote the winning design was brought to life by racing silks supplier Allertons.

Musselburgh will also fly the Pride flag from its historic grandstand this week, racecourse staff will wear Pride ribbons, and promotional activity around the course will mark the global event held each June to mark the 1969 Stonewall riots in the US which changed gay rights history.

The racecourse is also marking its support for the LGBT+ community with two specially named races – The Musselburgh Racecourse Celebrates Pride 2022 race over five furlongs, which took place last night, and again on Wednesday over 1m 1f at 3.50pm.

Musselburgh also received a vote of confidence as an LGBT+ welcoming venue from Edinburgh hairdresser Leo Gourlay who attended a recent race meeting.

Leo said: “I was really anxious, as a flamboyant gay man, to go racing for the first time. Being a member of the LGBT+ community I was really apprehensive before I got to Musselburgh Racecourse and going into such a traditional sporting environment.

“The whole racecourse staff, especially Jane Walker, were very gracious and welcoming. They made the whole race day enjoyable and inclusive and I will definitely be back.”

Musselburgh Racecourse Senior Operations and Commercial Manager, Sarah Montgomery said: “We are delighted to hear that Leo enjoyed his first experience at Musselburgh and look forward to welcoming him back. We also really appreciate the support of Gerry McGladery in helping us to celebrate Pride Month with his adoption of the Racing With Pride silks for his runners.

“Our aim is to be a fully inclusive, friendly and accessible racecourse and it is only right that we take these symbolic but important steps in recognising and supporting the LGBT+ community during Pride Month. We fully support Racing With Pride and hope the community get a taste for the joy of racing during Pride Month and become frequent visitors to Musselburgh.”

The BHA has been a long-time supporter of diversity in the industry and in 2020 launched Racing With Pride, the official LGBT+ network for British racing.

The network is designed for British racing’s participants, workforce and fans who identify as lesbian, gay, bi, trans and other sexual orientations and gender identities as well as allies of the LGBT+ community, who want to demonstrate their support, regardless of their own identity.

The network offers a safe space for LGBT+ people and allies to meet, receive support, have fun and enjoy racing online and in person and promotes a better understanding of LGBT+ inclusion to ensure racing is everyone’s sport, encouraging all to step up as allies.

Gates open at noon tomorrow (Wedneday) and the first race is off at 1.40pm.

Under starter’s orders for the greatest show on Earth

Cheltenham1

The crocuses are out in a riot of colour, daffodils stretch up to greet the watery sunshine and the days are getting longer and warmer. Yes, winter’s over and spring has finally sprung – and for thousands of National Hunt fans that can mean only one thing: the Cheltenham Festival, the greatest equine show on Earth!

For four frenetic days in March, this genteel and reserved Gloucestershire spa town is transformed into a vibrant, buzzing cauldron of noise, colour and excitement. For lovers of the jump racing game Cheltenham’s Prestbury Park is Mecca and the Festival is the climax to the jump season.

Race meetings have been held at this natural amphitheatre in the shadow of the Cotswolds for over a century, and the Festival itself has continued to grow and grow in size and in stature. Tens of thousands will make the annual pilgrimage against next week, with millions more television viewers joining them in spirit.

Cheltenham’s allure? Quite simply, it’s the greatest race meting on the planet. The races over the four days of the Festival are the most competitive in the jump racing calendar, contested by the outstanding horses and top jockeys from the UK, Ireland and yes, the rest of the world too. The unique nature of the course, with it’s undulations and stiff uphill finish, is the supreme test of horse and jockey. Courage, stamina, speed and agility – qualities that are all needed in abundance and if there’s a weakness, if there’s a chink in your armour then cruel Cheltenham will surely find you out.

The rewards for success, however, are considerable. For an owner, the exhilaration of having a Cheltenham Festival winner is the ultimate, the pinnacle, the Holy Grail – and that’s whether you own one horse in a tiny wee stable up North or you have a huge team of horses housed in the finest stables in England and across the Irish Sea. Grand National aside, there’s nothing like a Cheltenham Festival winner. For punters, too, a winner at Cheltenham is always that little bit sweeter – and, given the competitive nature of the racing (particularly those impenetrable handicaps!), the starting prices tend to be that bit more generous too!

National Hunt racing is egalitarian; it’s still a sport, and it feels like a sport: a country pursuit where the super-rich and the not-so-rich, the amateur and the professional rub shoulders and get along just fine, united in equine admiration. The joy of being there to soak up that unique atmosphere – and maybe even picking a Cheltenham winner too – transcends class and social status.

And unlike the parallel universe of flat racing, where £ multi-million‘superstars’ burn brightly for a few races and quickly retire to stud, the often unsung stars of the National Hunt game keep coming back to enthral and entertain us, race after race, season after season – health and fitness permitting. No, you can keep your cosseted, namby pamby Prima Donnas; give me those brave, battling grizzled old steeplechasers any day.

So we’re almost there – the clock’s ticking down to the almighty Cheltenham roar that marks the tapes going up to start the opening race on Tuesday. Will we see another Golden Miller, a new Arkle or a Desert Orchid? Cheltenham invariably produces a new hero, another fairy tale. And has the wretched winter weather wreaked havoc with training preparations, handing the initiative to Irish raiders? Can Quevega create history by winning the Mare’s Hurdle for an incredible sixth time on Tuesday? Can Big Buck’s come back and regain his World Hurdle title on Thursday? And is Friday’s Gold Cup really a head-to-head between Bobs Worth and Silviniaco Conti, or can an unheralded outsider beat the pair to take National Hunt’s blue riband? You just don’t know – the delicious uncertainty of Cheltenham make the occasion what is: pure spectacle, drama and theatre, delight and despair with more ups and downs than Prestbury Park itself.

For the punter, winners as always will be hard to find but, win or lose (and let’s face it, it’s usually lose!) I can hardly wait. The excitement’s building, so strap yourself in and hang on to your hat – we’re in for a bumpy ride!
