News from Granton Community Gardeners

Hi All,

It’s now August, and that means nearly time for our:

ANNUAL SUMMER BBQ

Saturday 11th August, FREE Food served from 1pm, at our new gardening HQ:
10 Wardieburn Road. (next door to Royston Wardieburn Community Centre)

You’re all invited!

Since our last email update, a lot of people have been working very hard in the gardens (especially watering!) and lots of the crops have been flourishing in the heatwave.

Yesterday we harvested lots of beetroot bigger than tennis balls that we only planted out as tiny seedlings 6 weeks ago.

COMMUNITY MEALS UPDATE:

Community meals are continuing every Tuesday at 5pm, but please note: for the month of AUGUST these will be held at the community garden (10 Wardieburn Road) instead of the church. This will be a bit more of a BBQ/picnic feel, but still a great chance to come and eat with neighbours, family and friends. All very welcome!

Food is FREE/donation/help with washing up etc..

If anyone would like to volunteer to help out with setting up or running the BBQ or community meal events, please give us a shout.

GARDENING DROP IN SESSIONS:

These are continuing, EVERY TUESDAY AND SATURDAY from 11am.

All welcome, no gardening expertise necessary. Meet at new garden: 10 Wardieburn Road. On Tuesdays there will be someone around all day, so you can work in the garden and then relax at the community meal, or come and go as you like..

We’ve been picking large amounts of soft fruit, and our heritage wheat has ripened super early this year. Give us a shout if you’d like to help harvest it..

Hope you’re all well,

Tom

News from Granton Community Gardeners

Dear All,

Happy New Year!

Bit stormy and there’s snow, so there’s not so much gardening going on at the moment, though drop-ins are still on every Tuesday and Saturday when the weather is reasonable (dry and not frozen or blowing a gale!)

You’re all invited to our Burns Night Community Ceilidh!  This has become a very popular regular annual event and this will be the 5th year.

BURNS NIGHT COMMUNITY CEILIDH

SATURDAY 3rd FEBRUARY. 5-9pm

ROYSTON WARDIEBURN COMMUNITY CENTRE

TICKETS £2. in advance only. (Volunteers, performers and under 5’s FREE) -tickets on sale from community centre reception.

Includes Food: Haggis Needs and Tatties (halal and veggie options available)

BYOB

We’ll need quite a few helpers at the event, especially in the teams setting up and decorating (it’s a big sports hall), and clearing everything up at the end.  Please give us a shout if you’d be up for helping!

Also if you’d like to perform a song/dance/poem/etc.  we have a few spaces available, either for traditional Scottish or other cultural performances. We know Granton has a lot of talent!   Let us know if so …

You’re also invited to our regular:

COMMUNITY MEALS

EVERY TUESDAY 5-7pm

GRANTON PARISH CHURCH HALL

(55 Boswall Parkway -entrance through gate on Wardierburn St East)

FREE -though help with washing up or donations are always welcome

ALL AGES WELCOME! (children with responsible adult)

We’ve been getting lots of good feedback on the food (thanks to our chef Jayne!) and it’s great to have somewhere warm to eat together.  We also make extra meals that can be taken away at the end for family/friends/neighbours, especially if you know someone who’d particularly appreciate it.

Hope you’re all well,

Tom

Join Granton Community Gardeners for a Harvest Meal on Tuesday

Dear All,

It’s turning cold!  Time to find a warm building, and cook lots of tasty food!  You’re all invited to:

GRANTON COMMUNITY GARDENERS HARVEST MEAL 2017

TUESDAY, 21st November.  Food served 5-7pm.

At Granton Parish Church (55 Boswall Parkway) -entrance on the corner of Wardieburn Street East.

FREE

ALL AGES WELCOME!   (kids need to come with a responsible adult)

If you’d like to help out in any way, we need some people to help decorate, cook, serve food, or wash up. Please reply to this email or speak to Jayne or Tom if you’d like to volunteer!

You’re welcome to bring neighbours, friends and family.. (if you can RSVP it’s helpful to get an idea of numbers, but you can just show up!)

Big thank you to Granton Parish Church for letting us use their kitchen and hall!

This will be the first of a regular series of meals, every Tuesday (early evening) between now and 12th December. We have some funding from the Scottish Government to support this, so will be hosting as many meals as we can over the Winter.

We’re very glad to have a vegetarian chef working with us, Jayne, who also works as a cookery teacher, so she’ll be keeping us right and in charge of food!  If anyone would like to help cook, it could be a good opportunity to share and learn some skills..

In other news:

Regular gardening drop ins are continuing, twice a week when the weather is ok. Meet 11am Tuesday or Saturday, at the garden on the corner of Boswall Parkway and Wardieburn Road.  Yesterday we were planting garlic..

Bread club has been really popular, and is now happening roughly once a month.  If you’d like to learn to bake or practice your skills, or would like to be contacted when we next have some of our own bread to sell, please get in touch!  We’re about to mill our wheat from this year’s harvest, so we’ll have some more of our own flour to bake with.

We should hopefully have some new exciting updates to share fairly soon, watch this space!

Hope you’re all well,

Tom
