Talking about regeneration

regen2Forth Neighbourhood Partnership and Community Councils are in the process of developing an event focussing on the wider regeneration of the area to take place on Saturday 27 September from 10am – 2pm in Edinburgh College Granton Campus.

We are currently working to bring together the community, landowners, the Council and its partners to share information about current and future regeneration plans and any opportunities that this can bring. This will also be an opportunity to learn of where key community aspects such as health, leisure, environment and social benefits are linked into any future developments.

regen1It is intended that the event outcomes will help shape proposals wherever possible and keep people informed with what is happening in the Forth neighbourhood. It should also support the creation of  a new vision for the area and potentially establish a wider Forth Regeneration Development Group.

We are awaiting confirmation of key speakers and felt that it was important to gauge interest in the event . I would be grateful therefore if you could use the link below to let me know if you and/or colleagues will be interesting in attending. A light lunch will be available on the day.

Please use this link to note interest. Responses will be checked regularly.

Further information is available from Michelle Fraser 529 3150 or myself.

Forth priorities: still time to have your say

Group of People interactingForth Neighbourhood Partnership is currently developing its new Community Plan – but there’s still time to have your say on what the priorities should be in Forth.

Forth’s Partnership Development Officer Jim Pattison said: “We would like to thank all who have already responded and gave comments on the priorities being proposed for the new Forth Neighbourhood Partnership Community Plan – we have received some very helpful responses to date.

“We are now at the stage where we need to begin summarising the responses in a report for consideration by the Neighbourhood Partnership but if you haven’t given us your views yet there is still time, and Scott Donkin will be happy to receive comments (by email or telephone) up until Friday 15 August”.

Scott Donkin, North Neighbourhood’s Partnership and Information manager, said: “We have been receiving some positive feedback and would welcome any thoughts you may have.

“The proposed priorities (see document below) have been developed following an initial engagement exercise with the community and our partners and we are keen to learn if it is felt the proposed priorities reflect this. We are in the process of engaging with as many people as possible and I would be grateful if you could email me with any comments (good or bad) or to highlight any specific areas you feel have been missed.

“It is intended that the proposed priorities will be reported to the Neighbourhood Partnership in August for adoption – so therefore any comments or requested meetings will need to be prior to the NP meeting.”

Hidden gems hunt to launch new community map

There be treasure in Forth!

North Edinburgh community group Living in Harmony has been working with Forth Neighbourhood Partnership to produce a new print and online community map. That work is now complete and a fun family event is being held to launch the new resource.

The Hidden Gems Community Treasure Hunt takes place on Friday 21 March (1 – 3pm) when local families can use the new map to find venues around the area, answer clues and take part in fun activities in each participating venue. The thinking behind this is that once you’ve visited a place and met someone friendly it’s much easier to go back again!

Sounds like fun – all welcome!

Help us make Forth Neighbourhood Partnership area a better place to live

Forth Neighbourhood Partnership would like to hear your views on what you think could improve the Forth area.

Neighbourhood Partnerships (NPs) are the City of Edinburgh Council ’s approach to delivering local community planning and they work to improve the quality of life in the area. The four councillors for the Forth Ward are all members of Forth NP along with City of Edinburgh Council , Lothian & Borders Police, Lothian NHS and local Community Councils.

The Partnership has recently been reviewing its work and we hope you can help shape our priorities by telling us what improvements you would like to see in the Forth area. This can include planning issues, community safety, parks & green spaces, traffic issues or anything else you are concerned about.

We also want your suggestions for small to medium scale environmental improvement projects for funding through our Neighbourhood Environment Programme (NEP). For more information see – www.edinburghnp.org.uk/neighbourhood-partnerships/forth/about/neighbourhood-environment-fund

Tell us what you think would improve the Forth area by:

1. Completing a form online at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GPT7383

2. Send an email with your priorities to jim.pattison@edinburgh.gov.uk

How do Neighbourhood Partnerships Work?

They can:

•  Bring decision making closer to the community

•  Provide opportunities for communities to express their views

•  Set out the priorities to improve quality of life in the communities

•  Make recommendations to the Council and other partner organisations about the way services may be delivered in  the local area

• Comment on strategic decisions that affect the local area

• Award small grants to community groups for projects that can make a difference in the local area.

Pilton gardens blossom at Holyrood

flyer compressed

West Pilton Community Garden was invited to take part in an exhibition of photographs at the Scottish Parliament this week, in the hope of raising government awareness of the work done by local people to create something beautiful and useful.

Community gardener, Kirsty Sutherland said “Many photographs have been taken as the garden developed last year and it was a hard job to select just three for the parliament, to give a ‘flavour’ of our garden and the people who have been working in it.”

The garden has been welcomed by local people and proved popular with local children who have enjoyed the ‘fruits of their labour’ over the summer.

Local MSP Mark Lazarowicz kindly signed the garden petition started by local people, to prove to Forth councillors that this garden deserves funding for simple needs like a secure shed, water tap, seating area and a wheelchair accessible path.

School groups and other local organisations working with disadvantaged adults and children wish to visit and work in the garden. We can’t provide this until we have the garden properly built and appropriate support workers on site.

Naomi from the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens said: ” ‘It was a great opportunity to showcase the excellent work of community gardening and farming projects and bring up some of the issues that affect community gardening and farming projects. A lot of interest was shown by MSP’s and many of them have signed up to visit a community farming/gardening project in their constituency. Through a visit the benefits of community gardening will be able to be experienced first hand.”

The benefits from community farming and gardening include; physical and mental wellbeing, socialising and meeting new people, creating areas which are beneficial for wildlife and the environment, encouraging people take a pride in their area, providing opportunities for learning new skills, volunteering and bringing people together to see what other opportunities there are for sustainable living on their doorstep.

We hope that our elected councillors will recognise that this garden is a sustainable community-led idea, and support the funding requests lodged with Forth Neighbourhood Partnership since 2011.
